About the Author
David L. Watson is a Fellow of the American Psychological Association and a Charter Fellow of the American Psychological Society. Watson is well known for his work in social anxiety, having developed the original scale to measure it. He has written textbooks in introductory psychology, social psychology, and learning skills. Watson is an enthusiastic world traveler, having visited over 100 countries. He speaks French and Greek, and is a certified master gardener, specializing in xerophytic plants. He divides his time now between Honolulu and Albuquerque.

Roland George Tharp is a distinguished researcher, psychologist, educator, writer, and filmmaker. Over the course of his career he has received repeated recognition for excellence and leadership in every arena of his work. Tharp is professor emeritus of education and psychology at the University of California, Santa Cruz, and professor emeritus of psychology at the University of Hawaii. He is the founding director of the national Center for Research on Education, Diversity & Excellence (CREDE) and the Kamehameha Elementary Education Program (KEEP). His research focuses on human development, psychotherapy, community psychology, education, culture, anthropology, and applied linguistics. Tharp is considered a distinguished researcher, practitioner, and author in the areas of education, educational reform, and the development of sociocultural theory. His work spans more than 40 years.

We all know what are the good habits and bad habits. But we don't know how to start a good one. This book teaches you in a scientific way, with huge amount of scientific references how to solve this problem. Don't judge the book with its price. For me this book is invaluable.

Ok, this is a textbook for students, but the information and practical applications are for everyone in this planet.

Incredible and Life-Changing

I purchased this as a required textbook, and it has become one of my most treasured books. The content is overwhelmingly practical and well-researched, with strong arguments against conventional wisdom nuggets like "white knuckling" your way through something. I enjoyed the book for the freedom it gives. First, the authors continually cited research about what makes the human mind change its habits and hangups, and what often causes it to fall two steps back. Second, they outline practical steps for how *you* should apply successful principles in your own life, in a patient voice that seems like one lightbulb revelation after another, all while talking to a wise friend. I'm looking forward to using it as a fundamental resource as I change myself for the better, one step at a time.

About the Author
Randall S. Kroszner is the Norman R. Bobins Professor of Economics at the University of Chicago's Booth School of Business, which he joined in 1990. He was a member of the President's Council of Economic Advisers in Washington, DC, from 2001 to 2003. From March 2006 to January 2009 Professor Kroszner served as a Governor on the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve Board. A specialist in the regulation of banking and financial institutions, corporate governance, international financial crises, debt restructuring, and monetary economics, he served as director of the George J. Stigler Center for the Study of the Economy and editor of the Journal of Law and Economics. Professor Kroszner received his Ph.D. from Harvard University in 1990.

Louis Putterman is Professor of Economics at Brown University, where he has taught since 1980. He is coauthor of Economics of Cooperation and the Labor-Managed Economy (1987, with John Bonin), author of Division of Labor and Welfare (1990), coeditor of Economics, Values, and Organization (1998, with Avner Ben-Ner), and author of Dollars and Change: Economics in Context (2001). Professor Putterman's current research interests focus on experimental economics and development and international economics, particularly the economics of China. He edited the first edition of The Economic Nature of the Firm and coedited the second edition with Professor Kroszner. Professor Putterman received his Ph.D. from Yale University in 1980.

About the Author
Caroline Carr is an author and therapist with a practice in Harley Street. She has 20 years experience helping people to feel better, make changes, and cope confidently in challenging situations. When her life partner of 20 years became depressed she could not find the right help, so she wrote this book (previously called Living with the Black Dog) to help others in the same situation. She has also written two other White Ladder books, How Not to Worry and Menopause: a guide for Real Women.

Great for those dealing with a certain type of depression

I thought that the helpful tips and ideas strewn throughout to help the partner cope were quite useful. However, I feel this book would be most helpful to someone whose spouse or loved one has a lot of anger with their depression. So while the author's personal stories were at times helpful, I wasn't able to relate most of the time.

I recently picked this book up at a second-hand store while looking for kids' books. I'd never read this before but I thought it was based on an article/story in a magazine I remember reading in school in 7th grade about the same situation; being "stuck in the first day of school": waking up every day and having to start over again! I don't remember what magazine that was that that story was in; supposedly it was some educational/religious magazine since I was at a Christian school that year, however when I read this book, I discovered this book wasn't what I thought and probably had no connection with the story in the magazine although both were similar.
When I read the first episode in the book about the first day, I was so mad at the main character's buddy Alex for how he treated people, especially poor Ollie, that I was just going to put down the book and not read it anymore but I'm glad I didn't because it gets better and better with every repeat first day of school! I cracked up laughing about the cafeteria's rotten food in spite of myself. That'd be awful but Alex the smart aleck got what he deserved, biting into a burger with rotten meat.
I can't remember the main character's name, but we see him become a stronger person instead of a follower of the bad seed Alex, as he takes Ollie the new kid under his wing and saves his house from a fire, and befriends the new girl Amber; they have a great friendship going on!! The ending was wonderful. I like this book a lot better than that article I said I read in 7th grade that was similar to this story because it had a happy and satisfying ending, whereas the one in the magazine left you hanging on a cliff practically! Very clever story, beautifully written. Kudos to Mr. Strasser, keep up the good work!

Are you looking for a funny book that is exciting and will keep you on the edge of your seat? Well Help, I'm Trapped in the First Day of School is just that. It tells the story of a boy named Jake and how he learns the truth about his new best friend, Alex. After Jake gets stuck in the first day of school with Alex six times in a row, he figures out that Alex isn't quite as funny as he first appeared. Jake learns that there is something he must do about his new best friend in order to stop the first day of school from coming again each day. The most hilarious part about this book was when Alex tries to tell the teacher about a nature wedgie and a Melvin wedgie. One of the most exciting parts is when Jake figures how to get out of the first day of school. I would recommend this book to someone who has a good sense of humor about kids who like to joke around in school.

The book was good not the best but good. It's a fantasy because somebody can't get trapped in a day. It's definitely good, funny and, interesting all at the same time. It would attract a readers that is between the ages of 8 to around 14. Now let me tell you a little about the book.

In the book a kid named Jake is going to be a punk and beat all the little kids on the first day of school because that's what the eighth graders did to him when he was a kid. So God trapped him in the first day of school. During the book he keeps, having to do the first day of school over again because God won't let him out till he does the right thing. That's all I'm going to tell you because I don't want to spoil it for you.

For years, the United States government maintained top-secret archives detailing its policy in Chile and its role in aiding and securing General Pinochet's rise to dictatorial power in the early 1970s. In this examination of the thousands of records recently declassified by the CIA, White House, NSC, Pentagon and FBI, Kornbluh offers new revelations about America's development of a policy dedicated to overthrowing Chile's existing democratic government and to replacing it with a military leader reviled for his complete disregard for human rights. Throughout the book, Kornbluh-a director of the National Security Archive, a nonprofit research library-buttresses his assertions with excerpts from the relevant documents, and attempts to shed light on some of the outstanding questions of the period that still beg for answers, including what motivated President Nixon and Secretary of State Henry Kissinger to authorize the bloody campaign and how involved the US government actually was in the September 1973 coup itself.

For Chileans, September 11th marks a different tragedy—the anniversary of the 1973 coup that overthrew the democratically elected government of Salvador Allende. This timely book weaves together thirty years of declassified documents with a gripping narrative of America's involvement in the affair. At a National Security Council meeting in 1970, Secretary of Defense Melvin Laird said of Allende, "We want to do everything we can to hurt him and bring him down," and a C.I.A. memo from the same year describes efforts of a key ally "to increase the level of terrorism in Santiago." This terrorism included the assassination of René Schneider, the constitutionalist commander-in-chief of Chile's armed forces, which was carried out with C.I.A.-provided funds and submachine guns. The evidence that Kornbluh has gathered is overwhelming. As Colin Powell recently remarked about the United States' role in the Pinochet coup, "It is not a part of American history that we are proud of."

Great review of a low point in Chilean and American history.

Kornbluh comes off as an authority on the subject of Pinochet and Chile/US relations during the 70s and 80s. The book is extensively backed up with references and scans of the actual declassified documents. Only criticism is that once in awhile the timeline jumps around a bit so you have to pay attention.

Very Dark Time in U.S. History

After September 11th 2001 the big question on the mind of American's was, `Why do they hate us?' Although the bloody military coup of Gen. Augusto Pinochet was over 30 years ago (ironically September 11th 1973) the lessons and ramifications still resound today. The main villain of the story is Nixon National Security Advisor Henry Kissinger but more so it's the belief that a purity of ideology trumps all other foreign relations concerns. Kissinger is quoted as saying "We [the United States] set the limits of diversity" and in Chile allowing a democratically elected Socialist to remain in power was unacceptable. The author writes, "This would be the first record of an American president [Nixon] ordering the overthrow of a democratically elected government".

I am no fan of neo-conservativism but one aspect of the movement I can appreciate is the desire to merge foreign policy with morality. Whether this has actually occurred is a debate for another book. Kissinger took such an amoral approach to foreign policy with his `realpolitik' that it's no wonder so many people around the world despise the United States. The United States did everything it could, including imposing economic sanctions using the World Bank, financing propaganda and fostering discontent among the military in order to bring down popularly elected president Salvador Allende. The goal was to wreck the economy and create conditions for a right wing takeover. So desperate to destroy Allende were Kissinger and Nixon that the CIA formed a working relationship with Patria y Libertad, a self-proclaimed neo-fascist paramilitary group that engaged in acts of terrorism including bombings who modeled themselves after Hitler's Brownshirts. After the violent coup that cost the lives of thousands of Chileans the U.S. government supported the brutally repressive Pinochet regime by reopening the spigot of foreign money and even selling military hardware while Pinochet's supporters rounded up and executed leftists. Chile wasn't just supported by the U.S. it was favored to the point where it was receiving 80% of all Title I Food for Peace in Latin America and $30 million from AID in housing guarantees compared to $4 million for the rest of Central and South America. Chile became the fifth largest customer of U.S. military weaponry falling just behind Iran.

There were at least as many people in government against what the United States was doing as for and the Republican leadership felt compelled to deliver endless and blatant lies to Congress in order to cover up their actions. This was a nasty, filthy piece of work that did incredible damage to the credibility of the United States and its place as a moral guidepost for emerging countries. So now Chile has come full circle with the election of Socialist Veronica Michelle Bachelet Jeria to the presidency. Venezuelian president Hugo Chavez has already learned that the United States still intends to set the limits of diversity with a U.S. backed coup attempt in 2002.

This is such an important book and if more American's were aware of history we might be less inclined to automatically blame others and spend more time correcting our own moral failings. When American's remain ignorant they become confused by the anger and resentment of others particularly in South America and the Middle East because people in those regions remember American actions quite well. This is not a blame America book but it is a look at actions that no American should be proud of. Chile is but one example of an amoral U.S. foreign policy and the more American's become aware the more we can improve in the future.

The Pinochet File by Peter Kornbluh is must reading for anyone interested in the relationship of the United States with Latin America! It is based on documents released from the National Security Archive. People ask why do these things happen in Latin America? This book shows that sometimes these things happen because the United States "White House", with the help of the C.I.A., has taken covert action to bring these things about. It forces the reader to ask himself serious questions about democracy and what national governments do covertly.
