About the Author
Joshua Cole is Professor of History at the University of Michigan. Specializing in the social and cultural history of France since the Revolution of 1789, he earned his Ph.D. at University of California at Berkeley. He is the author of The Power of Large Numbers: Population, Politics, and Gender in Nineteenth-Century France (2000).
Carol Symes is an Associate Professor of history and Director of Undergraduate Studies in the history department at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, where she has won the top teaching award in the College of Liberal Arts and Science. Her main areas of study include medieval Europe, especially France and England; cultural history; history of information media and communication technologies; history of theatre. Her first book was A Common Stage: Theater and Public Life in Medieval Arras (2007).

Typed in IBN# for Volume 1 -- ended up renting Volume 2 by mistake

Was on site for Western Civilizations: Volume 1 and noticed they had an eBook for rental. Rented it only to realize later that the eBook rental was for Volume 2. Once rented could not find link to cancel. Be very careful when looking at eBooksWestern Civilizations: Their History & Their Culture (Brief Fourth Edition) (Vol. 1)

A little narrow...

Unfortunately this is a required textbook for an elective in my Humanities course. It's a shame because I read through all my books before classes and find this hardly illuminating. It's your basic HS history course but just slightly refined.
Granted much of the information is either a) outdated b) severally biased with a very limited modernistic viewpoint applied to everything or c) hardly represents the Occident from an accurate perspective. Someone who doesn't do a little outside reading themself might take the info presented here as the end all be all of the development of Western civilizations. There's been so many interesting alternative viewpoints to history that are not fully expressed here and worth the effort in checking out.

Perfect!

The book is perfect, however you should state how many chapters are in the first volume, because I assumed that it had all of the chapters for edition 18. Not just the book going up to chapter 16 and then stopping.
