I love this book!!! It is a heavy glossy, big, hard cover book that can serve you as a decoration in your living room. But the most important is that it is a reference book in history of Art Nouveau. A must in your library!

A gorgeous work and a great value

This book presents all of the most important artists of the art nouveau movement, and many others who are less well known. The text is clearly written, informative, and well researched without being dry or academic, and the illustrations are of excellent quality. Painting, architecture, graphic design, and decorative arts are given equal and balanced treatment. The price is amazingly low, given the high production values. I recommend this for anyone interested in art nouveau, including scholars of art history as well as lovers of good art (and good books).

It is a question of degree, some slightly and some will run almost to syrup; it is impossible to obviate the former but the latter can be prevented. Great care should be used in adding the lowering, whether cream of tartar or glucose, too much of either will cause the goods to run immediately after they are turned out. Weak or inferior sugars, or not sufficient boiling, has also this effect. We know of no reliable agent which will altogether prevent this result but we do know that a careful arrangement of the different proportions, using good sugar and well boiling greatly mitigate, if not altogether prevent the grievance. Goods intended for exposure should contain just sufficient lowering to prevent the boil from growing grainy and boiled right up to the standard. Of course different sugars will carry more or less lowering, but this can be easily tested by the workman. A few experiments will determine the exact quantity for each boil. There is no excuse for drops sticking in bottles when corked, this should not occur, if it does, the fault is in the making; the water has a great deal to do with causing the candies to be sticky.

this book gives great information on how to make candies through sugar boiling, such as taffy if you don't get the temperature right it will be too hard or too soft. Its easy to understand and gives easy step by step instructions, and side items to help you understand.I really cant wait to try out the recipes.

Info is pretty old and outdated, and focuses more on commercial candy making and the equipment (all outdated now, I'm sure) needed to make it. If you're interested in that kind of thing, it might be good reading, but if you're looking to make candy at home, you might want to look elsewhere...

Really good but don't expect everything to be perfect on your first try

This is from a college student on a shoe-string budget with limited cooking experience. At the risk of sounding overly critical, I won't waste time pouring out accolades for the book. It is mostly what everyone else has said. Its strongest selling point is the details in which they present the recipes. As someone who has not yet developed a good cooking intuition, I very much appreciate the short essays before each recipe describing how they came to the 'best' one. Unlike other recipe books that just give you a list ingredients with sparing and often obscure instructions, this one gives you the thought process behind each step so that you understand what is going on, which in the end I think will make you a better cook.

As good as it is, this book does suffer from many of the same pitfalls that plague the recipe book genre. Despite their earnest attempts to make their recipes as robust as possible, I find that their recipes tend to be somewhat kitchen specific. Simple things like differences in oven settings and thickness of pots and pans will throw off the recipe. You will find that while high heat was ideal for them, it may mean a burnt salmon for you. They try to address these things but most times you just have to use your judgement and learn from your mistakes. For me, the recipes almost never come out the way like it on the first try; they tend to be 'ok' but not spectacular. This is usually a combination of me not having their recommended cookware, making small adjustments to cook with the ingredients I have or me just disagreeing with what the authors consider the "best recipe".

The first issue is largely a function of me being college student and not being able to afford the top notch cookware that they recommend. To be honest, the cookware they recommend are not exorbitantly priced. They tend to go for the best value but sometimes even the best value is a bit out of reach for me. Overall, I do find that most recipes were accessible and they try to stick with the most basic set of cookware that they think most home kitchens should have. They would even outline variations based on available equipment. For example, if a recipe calls for mixing they would sometimes show you how to do it with a standing mixer, food processor or by hand. Judging from the very pleasing results from my lackluster cookware, I would imagine that if I had reasonably well stocked kitchen I would be consistently churning out splendid dishes. The second case, not having the exact ingredients, is almost unavoidable in my opinion. They sometimes recommend things that I either can't find at my grocery store (usually a specific brand of a product) or too exotic to be used for something else. They have a thing for fancy cheeses and fine wine. Well, fine wine is always useful :) but I'm not going to buy $12 block of cheese just to grater a little bit over a bowl of soup.

There have been a few occasions where after making everything exactly as they say (right ingredients, cookware, method and everything), I would still find the recipe to be underwhelming. I could think of their blueberry muffin recipe for example. For them, the ideal blueberry muffin should be light, moist, sweet, buttery and loaded with blueberries. After making these muffins, I found that they were too light (almost cake-like), too sweet and too buttery. I would say it was a blueberry cupcake rather than muffin. I like to eat muffins with my breakfast so I like them to have a hearty texture and not to be too sweet. That's just my preference though. I also didn't like their french onion soup recipe. They introduced a short cut that literally involved burning the onions to speed up the caramelizing process but the soup came out way off. I tried other french onion soup recipes and I thought they were way superior. Others will disagree with my taste and that's fine but this is where the book shines. By providing the thought process behind each step, it is a lot easier to tweak the recipe to your liking.

I should also mention that the book is littered with many educational gems such as how to pick out the best knives, why brining a chicken works to improve its flavor and moisture, the different types of flour and how their properties affect your recipe etc.

Other caveats... the book is somewhat difficult to navigate. It presents recipes under broad sections like soups, poultry, beef, breakfast, etc. which I think is fine but the aforementioned educational asides are scattered. The first time I tried roasting chicken by their method I set off my fire alarm because of the smoke coming from the fat dripping onto the hot oven surface. A few pages later, they tried a recipe that was more prone to smoking and took a long aside to go over why smoking happens and how to avoid it. It would have been nice, if they had all these little caveats organized at the beginning of the book or each section so that you can read through them before jumping into a recipe.

In my humble opinion, recipes should provide more inspiration than instruction and this book possesses this quality more than any other I have read. I have just scratched the surface of this book, about a dozen recipes tried, and I have been very impressed with the outcomes so far and I have learned a whole lot. I do plan on investing in good cookware :) and I even have plans to host dinner parties soon.

Only Cookbook You Will Ever Need

I have been using the Internet for recipes; everyone and their sister seems to have a food blog these days. It took me quite a while to realize that my method was hit or miss. I mean, who's writing these blogs anyway? So, the search began for a really great cook book that covered "soup to nuts". This one is it! Plus, I got this book for a steal- sold as used but looked untouched. The first recipe I tried out was roasted potatoes. When I would cook them they were crispy on the outside and dry on the inside. Or moist on the inside and blah on the outside. America's Test Kitchen, of course, has it all figured out. They tested all kinds of ways of roasting potatoes, describing what's wrong with various techniques and then gives you the best recipe with an explanation of why it works. And it works great! The whole darned book is great.

Fantastic fantastic book

Fantastic fantastic book. One of books that I got when I first started learning how to cook.

Sure, my journey into the culinary world started with Alton Brown and his crazy antics and, uh, distinct, uh, way of speaking...but, uh, uh, this was one of the bricks that led me to where I am today (still pretty close to where I started, but I can make really good bread and other such foods).

This is a great book because they write about the process behind the recipe itself. So they discuss the various recipes they found, and what they liked about each one, and how they came to choose what to use and what not to use. It gives you an idea of how different ingredients affect the flavor and or chemistry in the cooking process. Making cookies? How does oil v butter v lard work? Check it out.

Oh, and follow the recipes, will you? People who deviate will blame it on the book, but you should at a minimum do it to the letter first. Afterward, feel free to alter it!

Building on work begun in The Tarot: History, Symbolism, and Divination, Robert Place offers the story of his search for meaning in the work of the alchemists, the ancestors of today's doctors, chemists and physicists. By weaving his personal story in with the information he has unearthed, he creates a compelling narrative that has the excitement of detective fiction woven with a respectful and careful examination of historical clues.

The alchemical view, "that the world, including rocks and minerals, is alive and that all living things share a common purpose--the desire or need to evolve into a higher state of being" is likely to resonate with readers in search of meaning in an increasingly detached and digital lifestyle. His narrative includes, as we would expect, an examination of the hermetic tradition, but it also draws lines connecting Jung, the Rosicrucians, and modern physicists in a section Place labels a "revival" of alchemical interest.

The book adds new information to our search for the origins of Tarot, features Place's extraordinary work in examining the drawings and artwork in museums and libraries, and includes a detailed explanation of the work and meaning underlying Place's The Alchemical Tarot.

Finally, for me, the most important contribution he makes is the careful teasing-out from the alchemical history of a process of self-transmutation and the inclusion of exercises that the modern reader can adopt that will facilitate that same process in all of us.

Wonderful scholarship on the historical background of Tarot!

Most books about Tarot lack nuance and a fine sense of the history of visual culture. Robert Place is a visual artist who has mastered not only the visual range of Renaissance history but also writes splendidly about the philosophic movements, religious issues, and psychological practices of visualization as they run through Western history. He is peerless in his treatment of active imagination.as he traces it from ancient Egyptian embalming practices through alchemy and the neo-Platonic Hermetica. Most books dismiss the ancient Egyptian origins of Tarot as a 17th-century myth. Robert Place makes a very strong integrated argument about the intuitive aesthetic continuity of Renaissance Tarot with ancient mystery practices going back to Egypt via Alexandria, the Hermeticists, alchemists, and Neo-Platonists. If you know enough history to have sensed such connections but felt the evidence is lacking, you will find an excellent argument here in Place's book.

On top of all the well-digested but not in-your-face scholarship, this book presents and discusses the images the author-artist created for the Tarot deck known as "The Alchemical Tarot." The images from this deck embody the argument of his book and show how his handiwork can deeply integrate his argument by producing a highly readable and functional Tarot deck. Each card is treated as an object for meditation and the rich symbolism is discussed with eloquence and careful scholarship.

The last third of this book comments on each of the 78 cards of Robert Place's "Alchemical Tarot" deck. The commentary goes far beyond other Tarot commentaries. Place's comments encapsulate for each card image everything he has written earlier in the book about the history of alchemy, Neo-Platonism, Hermetics, and active imagination. Every sentence resonates richly with his awareness of the deep symbolism of tradition. In this way, Robert Place reinvigorates the tradition, as if he possesses the Philosopher's Stone that can inject fresh life into dead matter. This is a book by a true wizard in which every sentence prompts renewed attention to images and where each image becomes a door to enter for personal meditation and for work of the heart.

In short, this book is a gem that deserves to be widely known. Our culture should only deserve to appreciate what the author has put into this book.

Don't think for a moment that this is just another Tarot book or another Little White Book on "just another Tarot deck."

Cutesy Family Journal

I'm sure this keepsake journal will be exactly what some mothers need through their pregnancy, but it didn't fit our desires that well. The book is definitely formatted super cutesy; while the design of the book is great, we wish the content was better organized and more suited towards the baby. This book is geared toward the family (not saying it's a bad thing, we just wanted something much more heavily focused on the baby). It starts with filling out profiles for the mom and dad, how we met, and yaddy yaddy yada. It's not until maybe a third or a fourth into the book that the journal starts focusing on the baby (finally!). There is some nice content that predicts whether you will have a boy or girl, (the journal was correct in predicting our baby's gender) and cutesy envelopes attached onto the pages so that you can write a letter to your child. The rest of the journal is broken up into three trimesters.

All in all, this is a great pregnancy journal focused on the family, (parents plus new baby) but if you're looking for something focused on the baby, I'd suggest a different journal. Still happy with our purchase because it'll be a wonderful keepsake to remind ourselves the experiences and memories of our first pregnancy. However, if we have another child, we will probably go with a different journal the second time.

You must get it!

I absolutely love my journal. It focuses so much on the family and the love between the couple. It asks for letters to the baby, pictures, hopes, dreams you name it! I get to write out as much as I want and give lots of details I know our child will love reading. This is the best one and I've looked at them all.

It is not easy to make this journal suit my needs

This should be for a new mom. I read many reviews that made it sound suitable for an experienced mom, but there is so much space to devoted to new maternity clothes, and body changes, items being bought for the baby, and the husband's response to the pregnancy. Let's face it, by baby #3, I just want a place to track pictures and ultrasounds, write about crazy pregnancy dreams and letters to baby, and keep announcements. It is not easy to make this journal suit my needs, so I'd really only recommend it for new mom's who are highly focused on their marriage, appearance, wardrobe, and building the nursery!

A Logical Introduction to Proof is a unique textbook that uses a logic-first approach to train and guide undergraduates through a transition or “bridge” course �between calculus and advanced mathematics courses. �The author’s approach �prepares the student for the rigors required in future mathematics courses and is appropriate for majors in mathematics, computer science, engineering, as well as other applied mathematical sciences. It may also be beneficial as a supplement for students at the graduate level who need guidance or reference for writing proofs. ��Core topics covered are logic, sets, relations, functions, and induction, where logic is the instrument for analyzing the structure of mathematical assertions and is a tool for composing mathematical proofs. Exercises are given at the end of each section within a chapter.

Chapter 1 focuses on propositional logic while Chapter 2 is devoted to the logic of quantifiers. Chapter 3 methodically presents the key strategies that are used in mathematical proofs; each presented as a proof diagram. Every proof strategy is carefully illustrated by a variety of mathematical theorems concerning the natural, rational, and real numbers. Chapter 4 focuses on mathematical induction and concludes with a proof of the fundamental theorem of arithmetic. Chapters 5 through 7 introduce students to the essential concepts that appear in all branches of mathematics. Chapter 8 introduces the basic structures of abstract algebra: groups, rings, quotient groups, and quotient rings. Finally, Chapter 9 presents proof strategies that explicitly show students how to deal with the fundamental definitions that they will encounter in real analysis, followed by numerous examples of proofs that use these strategies.� The appendix provides a useful summary of strategies for dealing with proofs.
