Standard Fear Street sillyness. Not bad until it's utterly stupid, insulting cop-out ending.

Caitlyn Donnelly is enraged when she discovers that the boy she loves - Blade Hampton - was simply stringing her along. So she kills him. Being discovered by the police is the last of her worries, as events see Blade coming back from the dead to harass her.
There's a good idea floating about these pages, but the execution is terrible. Like previous entries in this reboot, the supernatural elements are tossed in far too lazily, with no specific "rules" to follow. Stine just bends things to his will to match where he wants the story to go. It really bugs me. I will concede that a 12 or 13 year old may be less fussy than my 36 year old self, but I still think it's sloppy. There's a lot of YA material out there that doesn't treat its readership like, well, idiots. I am also quite disappointed that the Fear Street reboots just don't feel like Fear Street books. They more resemble Goosebumps books, but with older characters and more graphic violence. In actual fact, only a small minority of the original Fear Street books contained a supernatural element. More than 75% were simply fun, fast-paced murder mysteries or thrillers. Here, four out of five of the books have been supernatural. Stine needs to remember which series he's rebooting!
Characterisation is standard for this series. It's more about providing a fun, slightly cheesy, fast-paced horror tale than creating believable characters with depth. And "The Dead Boyfriend" does move along at a decent clip, with Stine's infamous cliffhanger chapter endings working pretty well this time around. In fact, I wasn't entirely hating the book....until it delivered one of the most horrendous, deplorable cop-out endings I've ever had the open-mouthed shock to read. For real? I was taught in Year 3 of PRIMARY SCHOOL not to end a story like that. I am absolutely astounded a publisher would foist an ending like that on a reader and assume it wasn't a complete insult to their intelligence. It pretty much destroyed the book for me. I was tempted to rate it 1 star for that reason alone. However, I didn't hate the experience of reading "The Dead Boyfriend", so I've been generous and bumped the rating up to 2 stars.
It must be said, even the 160 page Fear Street quickies from the 90s had more substance than this waffle. When this reboot inevitably dies a quiet death due to juvenile writing and lousy plotting, I'll go back to re-reading the originals.

I am just in love with these new Fear Street books. I loved Stine's other books about Fear Street but these ones are a step up. They still have everything that a Fear Street book has but these step it up a notch. The Dead Boyfriend was one of my favorites it was just so good. I loved the action , story and the twist ending that I didn't see coming.

I loved the writing, however the story line left a lot to be desired. I wondered how the author would finally tie up any loose ends, but I felt very cheated with the outcome. I loved the Fear Street Series of long ago, but not sure the newer ones are as good.
