About the Author
Tomlinson Holman is President of TMH Corporation and one of the prominent figures in audio today. He is widely known for his development of new products and processes in the field of audio and video, including the THX Sound System, Home THX (with his patents licensed to more than 45 companies), and the THX Digital Mastering program developed while he was Corporate Technical Director at Lucasfilm, Ltd. He has won career achievement awards from CAS and the Custom Electronics Design and Installation Association. Mr. Holman is a Fellow of the Audio Engineering Society, the British Kinematograph Sound and Television Society, and the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers. He is Co-Chairman of the Audio Engineering Society Task Force on High-Capacity Audio.

MIXING FOR SURROUND? IT'S TRICKY BUT IT'S DOABLE.

So LOGIC and CUBASE offer a "free" option for mixing in surround, but to do it in PROTOOLS you have to buy PROTOOLS HD, or go back in time and get an archair PROTOOLS TDM system. Oh well. Good to know. There is much work to be done, and I'd better start doing the work. But this book is a good start. THere's also an awesome ProTools app called "spanner" from a guy in Australia / New Zealand, search YouTube for "spanner" and be prepared to see something awesome.

5.1 Channel Surround Sound: Up and Running

It is true that surround sound is a topic that has only recently been resubmitted to the scholarly and professional community for reconsideration. A book on this topic, especially by an accomplished expert such as Holman, should be welcomed. It is somewhat disappointing therefore that his efforts fall short and his book reads like a direct outcome of introductory lectures on the subject. There is a certain lack of precision and lucidity in its structure and format. Scholarly references have been almost completely omitted despite the fact that the professional world has been concerned with surround sound for years now and there are many publications available in form of technical papers; instead there is a long list of soon to be outdated addresses and phone numbers of respective manufacturers of surround sound equipment. Many technical terms are mentioned -- often quite casually, but very few explained in detail; information tends to be scattered and redundant without ever reaching a particular depth. I would recommend this book to a novice in sound recording if it weren't for the many terms that lack thorough explanation. It seems regrettable that what should have remained an introductory paper on the topic was artificially padded to become a book.

Excellent introduction to surround sound. Tom is definitely more than a great teacher and legendary figure that I had the opportunity to meet at the IIM-Paris (Institut International du Multim�dia)... he's also a very good writer ! Buy his book, it's a great one !
