My Favourite John Mefford Book So Far

A great debut mystery in the new Alexandra Giordano (nee Troutt) series! Alex wakes up into a nightmare! She is lying in a hospital bed, suffering from amnesia, being told she is recovering from an accident. But is it true? She doesn’t know anyone around her, and that includes her husband, children and colleagues! She is told that she is an FBI Special Agent (this you don’t doubt as her skills are quickly put to the test), a mother and the wife of a wealthy attorney. But with no memories of her life, she struggles to trust anyone, especially her husband who shows little love and compassion.
As her memories start to return, she realizes that most of them are of her work, not her friends and family life. Her first case, involving a serial killer, sees her teaming up with her former partner, Nick. Now, not only must she find the killer, but she must find herself too!
I really enjoyed getting to know Alex. She’s sassy, smart, tough and obviously very good at her job. She questions herself as a wife and mother, as she deals with two precocious, rude children, an absent husband and a nanny that seems to have taken her role in the family. Her character was well developed through the book, so that although she (and the reader) had no idea who she really is, getting to know her was an intriguing journey. I’m sure further books in the series will reveal even more juicy tidbits.
The plot was well thought out, with a good thriller-feel and some interesting twists. I look forward to reading the next book in the series.

Strong female lead character, tight story line, great read

I received a copy of this book in return for an honest review.
I first "met" John Mefford through a free copy of "Streets of Mayhem". When I got the chance to read AT Bay in return for a review, I took it. And I'm glad I did.
We meet Alex Troutt when she's in the hospital following a car accident, dealing with amnesia and wondering who all of the people are in her room. They try to tell her about herself...wife, mom, FBI agent...but she remembers none of it, although pieces work their way out of her brain as parts of the "old" Alex respond to various comments. (And she's typically a bit snarky, which is great.)
We follow her as she wonders why certain people (like the slutty nanny) are in her life, as she tries to figure out why she was in an accident, and as she tries to learn how to relate to her husband. Her ingrained skills come out as different situations arise, and she starts to realize that she really was a pretty good FBI agent. It's fascinating watching how her brain remembers little things (her former partner was a marathon runner, for example) while not remembering others (why does her daughter dress that way? what kind of mother was she? does she really love her husband?).
I gave this four stars because I got tripped up in a couple of places (partly because I live in the area where the story takes place and partly because of a couple of unresolved issues), but those things were really minor. I look forward to reading the next story in the series...Mefford has created a complex female character who will be dealing with a variety of issues for books to come. (Not all characters are as complex, at least not right now.)

An Enthralling New Series!

Imagine having everything your heart could desire and then it's suddenly ripped out of your hands. Putting myself in Alex's shoes, I think I may have lost my mind - literally. But this woman is tough. So tough that she heads right back to work despite the difficulties that plague her. This thriller is the first of what I hope to be a long series because I'm already addicted! Her character is extremely consistent in growing from start to finish. I especially love how she reinvigorates herself in her career and grows into quite an amazing agent. I think as the series continues, she'll get bits and pieces back that will help shape Alex even more but will also aid in her cases. Honestly, I was a bit sad as I neared the end of the book. Everything started coming together and I knew that it'd soon be over. Book two can't get here fast enough!
If you haven't read anything of John W. Mefford's before, I highly recommend this book along with his Booker series. I should have learned by now that Mefford's ability to enthrall me in his books has no boundaries.
