Good for reference or a classroom setting
By Edgar Poe
I used this book in my advanced c# class. But, having prior experience, this book is more of a beginner - intermediate c# textbook. it is a great reference for someone who is just starting the language. It has all the bells and whistles of a basic programming book with the addition of throwing some cool information about LINQ, Windows 8, and SQL. When i say some cool information I mean, a minimum amount with barely any more knowledge than just giving you the definition and basis of what each does. Overall though, if you're starting C# programming or need some more beginner knowledge, start here. If you already have experience, steer clear.

Note though that this book starts off on console programs, which I like more than going straight into visual programming.

Maybe the best way to learn C#.
By Jaewoo Kim
I was hesitant to purchase this book because I had also read the 1st edition of this book released back in 2001.

My fears were unfounded. Most of this book is completely new (from the 1st edition).

This is a much better book than the 1st edition in many ways. It covers algorithsm such as sort, searching, and linked lists. It also covers LINQ.

I would say only about 1/3 of the book are devoted to basic subjects. The rest of the 2/3 covers materials, such as OOP, LINQ, and algorithms, that should provide insights for the beginners and experienced programmers alike. I think this is a perfect book for intermediate developers.

Pros:
1)Almost completely new (compared to the 1st edition).
2)Has lot of practice problems (mostly good ones). But there are no solutions to them.
3)Excellent programming examples.
4)Overall good explanations of C# concepts.
5)Comprehensive coverage.

Cons:
1)Doesn't dig deep into any single subject. There is more breadth than depth. This is an ideal book for those who are trying to learn C# (especially those who are porting from JAVA).

Solid C# Reference
By Clarity
I've been exposed to quite a few programming books as a student, and this book is solid. If you want to know absolutely everything you should know about the C# language (and to some extent the .NET framework) at a beginner level, this is a great choice. However, even for a beginner, the authors just keep diving further and further down a concept, which can make a simple concept seem a little like they're "beating a dead horse". But I suppose that if too much detail is the only negative, well, that's a good thing.
