Maybe that's oversimplifying a bit, but the basics are the same. In this story, we have the Grinch, who hates Christmas and every year must put up with the celebration of the Whos who live in the valley below his cave. But this year things will be different. This year, he intends to do something about it. Surely the Whos will be disappointed when they wake up Christmas morning to discover that all their presents and decorations have been stolen. Or will they?

Told is classic Seuss fashion, completely in rhymes, this book appeals to kids year round. I know I insisted that it be read to me more then just in December. The fanciful illustrations, also classic Seuss, are just as engaging as this story. After all, what could be worse to kids then no Christmas? Yet there is a message here that there is more to Christmas then the commercialism we see around us. It's subtle and not expanded on greatly, but it's there none-the-less.

Surely Charles Dickens' classic tale was an influence when Dr. Seuss sat down to write this book. Both the main characters hate Christmas and miss the point, but have a revelation that shows them how important Christmas really is. Of course, the meat of the stories is completely different, so kids not ready for Dickens will love this one.

If there is such a thing as a classic picture book, this belongs in that category. Enjoyable at Christmas, or the whole year round.

Geared to PMBOK 5: A useful quick ref for PMPs; slightly less useful for aspiring test-takers

If you're studying for the PMP exam, this new edition of "Project Management for Dummies" will clarify many of the concepts, without being "dumbed down" as much as the popular "Head First" book, which includes a huge amount of white space and overly large cartoon illustrations.

The Dummies book explains things in simplified terms, which means the language of this book and the language of PMI's PMBOK are different. However at the end of each chapter there is a table summarizing the topic, cross referencing that chapter with where to locate the analogous information in the 5th edition PMBOK, and stating PMI's terminology for what has just been reviewed. (You can see examples of the table format, "Relating This Chapter to the PMP Exam and PMBOK 5" in Amazon's "Look Inside This Book" preview.)

This is a good supplemental reference for anyone studying for their PMP certification. It allows the student to easily locate and review explanations of the information presented in the PMBOK, and includes helpful Quick Reference material for things that have to be memorized, such as formulas.

The Dummies book explains _concepts_ nicely, but if you're studying for the PMP exam you should still use at least one other reference / study guide specifically geared to test takers; the books by Rita Mulcahy, Andy Crowe, or Kim Heldman are considered the best. These study guides include more in-depth analysis, specific terminology, and practice test questions.

Using "Project Management for Dummies" plus the PMBOK would not have prepared me sufficiently to pass the exam. However, as someone who has already passed the PMP, I find this book is an excellent quick reference tool on Project Management.

Great desk reference for the essentials, not a cert study guide.

I have been a PMI Certified PMP for several years. I bought this book as a desk reference. Easy to find material and covers the essentials well. Great as a desk reference. If anyone is thinking about using it as a PMP Certification study guide, I would definitely say no, that is not it's purpose.

Great PM book. Complete and Balanced - More complete than the "Dummies" title might suggest

I bought this having accepting a new role leading a major HRIS implementation after been away from project management for a while. It was the only guide I have referenced and between this text and good common sense, I have been completely equipped for the project. When comparing this to other books, this stands out because it covers not only the technical aspects of project management, but also the equally, if not more, important "soft skills" that through my years seems to be the difference-maker between good and great project managers. Sections with titles like "Reacting Responsibly When Changes are Requested", "Can you hear me? - listening actively", etc. are good examples of what makes this book great. Simply put, this is a complete and BALANCED text to prepare you and guide you through your next project - big or small. My copy is now dog eared and ragged as it travels in my commuter backpack every day.

Another book on Disney! What can I actually learn? Well...quite a bit. I was initially reluctant when I saw this book title. However, once I stepped back and looked at the very long history of Disney, along with its continued success, I quickly realized that I had a lot to learn. The sections of the book capture the essence of the book: Dream -- Believe -- Dare -- Do.

The section on Dream made me a believer in the value of this book. I wanted to learn how to capture a vision, own it, instill it in others, and make everyone profitable. By profitable, I don't just mean monetarily. By creating and living that dream, work no longer exists. You find yourself waking up faster and racing to work. The drudgery is gone. I wanted to instill the Disney Way into the way I work and live. This book will help put you on the journey to do just that.

The one chapter, "Never a Customer, Always a Guest," is one that is worth the price of the book. The actual real life lessons contained in this chapter bring to live this vital concept. With this mindset, you retain your customers and you quickly gain new ones, too.

One more call-out...the chapter "All for One and One for All" does a splendid job discussing rewards that promote teamwork. This chapter goes against the grain of rewarding individual performance that creates an unhealthy culture of competitiveness vice teamwork. I live in Essex with my son, who is studying at University, and my two cats, Puzzle and Bud. I’ve always loved writing and in January 2011 I got together with some friends and set up a writers’ group at our local library. One of our first guest speakers was a young lady called Penelope Fletcher who talked to us about self-publishing – I was so inspired I went back home, found some stories I’d written for my son when he was young and started the process of learning how to self-publish. I published 3 books in the Burly & Grum series and then in July 2012 was lucky enough to be signed up by GMTA. I’ve enjoyed every single second of my journey so far, learnt an incredible amount and I’m looking forward to the future!

Colorful,Creative and Christian

Max is a boy whose best friends are a bear named Burly and a groblin named Grum. Don't know what a groblin is? Neither did I until I read this book!

Burly is the conscience and rational, responsible one. Grum, as the name is short for, is the grumpy one. And then there's happy-go-lucky Max, the adventurous one. The three are about to undertake an adventure that leads them all to peril...

This book is the second in a series, but I didn't read the first and still found it fully functional as a stand alone. It is imaginative, full of whit and charm, and will make any child smile and wish they could have such adventures. After all, who hasn't wished that they could stumble upon an abandoned city in the woods?

The illustrations are terrific. They add to the story, and are well done. The story is easy going and subtle in the peril, but still make the reader jump and sit on the edge of their seat. Additionally, the Christian themes make it one that is good for young children without being too preachy.

In short, I love it. Its innocence makes it ideal to be read to younger readers (it's not too long - maybe 40 pages) or a good one for beginner chapter book readers. My son is 11, and I know he'll have a good time reading it, too.

I hope the author continues this trio's adventures, and I'll be buying the first in the series while staying on the look out for more! Additionally I will be featuring the book in my blog Spirit Filled Kindle

Adorable and Funny

A very good book for the young ones. I know my daughter was infatuated from the moment she saw Burly and Grum, Even taking her teddy bear and holding on tight to it through the whole book, which was a great thing for her as of late. Her attention span through chaptered books was starting to wan, I'm proud to say that she got a renewed strength The pictures helped a little too.

The story is cute and compelling of a boy, his bear and his groblin. They are always in adventure and constantly in trouble like children often are. With the bear being more of the wise old father figure that tries to keep them both on track.

The morals are amazing and something my daughter caught on to quickly. The mixture of thrills, comedy and adventure kept her enthralled and had my daughter begging for more, If anything I am glad to say that it's renewed her love of the chapter books and having mommy breathlessly reading them to her constantly a habit. I have to thank the author for giving us a wonderful story and wonderful characters to which I wish I had my own Burly or Grum to hug and have at night.

"BURLY AND GRUM AND THE SECRET CITY" BY KATE TENBETH

I just finished this book and I have to say it is simply adorable. There are fantastic morals in the story, lessons that every child should learn early on such as how it's wrong to hunt and harm animals, and how you can always count on your true friends to be there for you. The characters are cute and you can't help but to be drawn in by them. I love the fact that Kate also has elements of inspirational faith in her book such as the addition of the angel lovingly called Mike.

This book is a fantastic read and one I think children of all ages would enjoy. It has adventure, comedy, and thrills delivered in all the right amounts. My daughter is begging me to get her a Kindle so she can read it! I got a feeling she just might steal mine! The illustrations are also beautifully drawn, the artist has amazing talent. Thank you Kate for a beautiful story with characters that I could definitely see as stuffed toys! You just want to squeeze them tight!

About the Author
Mark Q. Sutton began his career in anthropology in 1968.� While still in high school, he took advantage of the opportunity to participate in archaeological excavations conducted by the local Community College. He went on to earn a BA (1972), an MA (1977), and a Ph.D (1987) in anthropology.� He has worked as an archaeologist for the US Air Force, the US Bureau of Land Management, various private consulting firms, and taught at a number of community colleges and universities.� He taught at California State University, Bakersfield from 1987 to 2007 where he retired as Emeritus Professor of Anthropology.� He now works for Statistical Research, Inc. in San Diego.� Dr. Sutton works on understanding hunter-gatherer adaptations to arid environments but has also investigated entomophagy, prehistoric diet and technology, and optimal foraging theory.� Dr. Sutton has worked at more than 120 sites in North America and has published over 160 books, monographs, and papers on archaeology and anthropology.

About the Author
Lyle Brotherton is a member of a Scottish mountain rescue team and both lectures and instructs 'Advanced SAR Navigation' to Mountain Rescue and Search & Rescue teams, plus the Special Forces. He also advises the UK & US Governments on navigational strategy in Emergency Management Planning and works with international governments post major disasters, such as the floods in Pakistan, 2010. In writing this new book he worked with over 130 Search & Rescue teams in 22 countries. The Real Deal

This book is extremely valuable for anyone interested in land navigation.

If you love the great out-of-doors, be it mountain biking, backpacking, day-hiking, or whatever, Micronavigation is an absolute jewell, a must-read. It demystifies land navigation and makes the skills necessary to successfully navigate in the wilds available to everyone.

It will teach you how to use maps, terrain, compasses, GPS receivers and tons more. And it doesn't matter whether you're a beginner or an expert: this is one of those rare books which you cannot fail to learn from, irrespective of level.

If you're a beginner, and you practice the techniques Brotherton shares with you, you'll begin to develop a feel for land navigation. When that happens, your outdoor world will change.

Micronavigation is easy to read, but it's also stunningly comprehensive. Brotherton's complete mastery of things navigational, his ability to write clearly and concisely and the myriad of excellent color illustrations enable him to lead even beginners through a wide range of sophisticated topics without (dare I say it . . .) losing them. You just can't help learning.

True, there's stuff you'll probably never use, at least directly . . . like navigating near the North or South pole. But reading about the problems such navigation poses are (at least to me) intrinsically interesting, and I can well imagine myself extrapolating what I've read about polar navigation to problems I could face in my own neck of the woods.

Make no mistake . . . Lyle Brotherton is the real deal. I doubt there's another person in this world with the breadth and depth of experience he has.

I teach land navigation/GPS to our county's Search and Rescue team, and I've taught at a couple of SAR conventions. I'm not ashamed to admit that I'll now be teaching many of the tips and techniques I've learned from having read Micronavigation.

Well written informative book

I bought this book hoping to learn more about using topo maps. Not only did it tell me everything I wanted to know I found a lot more stuff about hiking navigation and land navigation in general that I wasn't expecting and didn't even know about. The book is so well written that I even kept reading beyond my immediate interest just for entertainment. And learned a lot too.

This is an excellent manual for the beginner (as I am), and even the expert hiker. Everything is explained from the very basic to the most advanced. If you need to see what the author is talking about there are plenty of photographs. You would have to work real hard to get lost. I would recommend this book to my family and friends. Even a boy scout.

Oh dear. A book called Funky Business by two Swedish academics. At first glance, it has all the allure of Benny and Bjorn's (from Abba) sadly never-released concept album about life as a middle manger in a multinational conglomerate. There is something earnestly hip about the way Kjell Nordstr�m and Jonas Ridderstr�le of the Stockholm School of Economics present themselves. "They do gigs not seminars. These gigs sell out. They have shaved heads and wear black," says the blurb.

But that's what makes Funky Business worth reading. It's not so much the novelty of the authors' argument, which boils down to the notion that in an oversupplied world, ideas are what separate successful companies and individuals from failures. Rather, it's the vitality of their argument and the rhythm of their language that make their ideas so compelling. "Traditional roles, jobs, skills, ways of doing things, insights, strategies, aspirations, fears, and expectations no longer count. In this environment, we cannot have business as usual. We need business as unusual. We need different business. We need innovative business. We need unpredictable business. We need surprising business. We need funky business."

The book, which is almost a virtuoso display of rhetoric and intellectual power, bursts at the seams with the force of its argument and the weight of its colorful evidence. Considering this book is written 20 years ago, I may not be evaluating it in the right context. And the world back then seems too remote to me. The central argument of this books is: we live in a new world X, and, to succeed in world X, organizations and leaders must do Y. Let's evaluate this. Are we still living in world X? Now, yes; in five years, may be not. With brexit and Donald Trump, the world may slowly head back to focus on local and domestic economy. On the other hand, if organizations and leaders do Y, do they succeed without living in world X? It is true that we see unicorn companies like Uber, Airbnb, and Tesla, which are distinct from the traditional companies. But so is Bell Labs from the last century. It lives in a world before X, and its organization is full of talented people and consists of an environment to innovate. Of course, whether Bell Labs can survive without its cash-rich parent AT&T is a separate question. But this shows the limitation of the book: it does not argue X is the necessary condition of Y, as the more inclined reader would wonder. Instead of focusing on the conditions that are changing, what are the fundamental immutable truth about successful companies? To this, I recommend reading the book "Good to Great: Why Some Companies Make the Leap...And Others Don't" by Jim Collins.

The book is divided into six major parts: 1) funky times, 2) forces of funk, 3) funky village, 4) funky inc., 5) funky u, and 6) feeling funky.

Funky times sets the tone about the new world we are living in. With vast abundance, value no longer lies in material, but more intangible element. The author argues that knowledge will be the determining factor of success. In the face of fierce global competitions, businesses need to differentiate themselves using knowledge. He cites an example of car industry where the differentiator is design -- not the engine. Organizations needs to innovate at a faster pace. And leadership becomes even more important -- which, ultimately, means men too.

Forces of funk examines three underlying driving force of this new world. Technology, especially computers, is moving at an accelerating pace. The weakening power of institutions, from ideology, state, political parties, enterprise, to family. Values that become liberated, global, and yet empty. These forces combined had led to deregulation, and hence, more freedom.

Funky village then discusses the society we are living it. It is abundant, fast-paced, information-heavy, and globally connected. Society is also transforming in three different ways. Identities becomes blurrier. Societies becomes more fragmented. Things are being combined in novel ways. These have all led to a winner-take-all society.

Funky inc. discusses the properties of organization that will succeed amid new challenges. It must be focused, leveraged, innovative, and heterarchical.

Funky u discusses leadership. A leader must be visionary, creative, always learning, and sensitive. In order to be successful, it is key to be unique, incorporative, and connected.

Feeling funky discusses the attitudes that will make you successful.

Read this book only if you like the obvious

There are many ways to get wrong with a business book and only a few ways to get it right. Whatever is deemed to be perennial classics often turns into cellulose pulp in a few short years.

The "$.50 plus shipping" humiliation already happened to Jim Collins and his "X to Y" franchise, and Funky Business is definitely next in the line. The author's claim to fame is being MOBOs - the masters of obvious - by unleashing their braindumps onto the unsuspecting readers. The lightness of material, of course, frees the treatise from any responsibility, but also strips it of any practical value. All you get after reading the Funky Business Forever will be some noise plus one or two slightly deeper insights that are barely news anymore.

There is, however, still one good reason to read this book - that is, if you were cryogenically frozen for last thirty years and desperately need to catch up.

Nordstrom & Ridderstale done good job stacking random business headers up to 1999, but it gets sketchier beyond that, even with the "Forever" facelift. The authors still live the world, where TV is a dominant source of information, fabless manufacturers are novelty and people are amused about their clothing labels. Above and beyond this level of knowledge, Funky Business boldly states that blue is blue, red is red and whoever is cool remains cool until he gets uncool. But you can probably figure this on you own.

into the 3rd close reading, still with enough adrenalin

This is not for everyone, very hip and very funky.
The message is important, but the way they present it is a beauty. The language is different than most business book you read, probably the european backkground cause that. BUT it is VERY delicious.
Lots of interesting pictures, lots of picturous quotations, lots of emotion packed words. It mumble here and there, talk about this and that, but the spirit of the NEW era is there, funky and different. It bring a pause to the regular books with depth and tons of thoughts necessery to dicern them, it liberate your souls.
The message is simple: be different or doomed, they tried to tell you why.
Harry Potter is a general page-turner book, this one also does, go and get it. The high adrenalin you got from reading it worth much much more that the cost of the book. One of the best books i read.

About the Author
John Kotter has been on the faculty at Harvard Business School since 1972. He is the author of eleven award-winning titles and frequently gives speeches and seminars at Harvard and around the world. He lives in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Holger Rathgeber spent his early professional career in Asia. He has worked in industry since the early 1990's and is now with one of the leading medical technology companies, Bectom Dickinson. Harvard Business School professor Kotter, author of the bestselling Leading Change (1996), teams up with executive Rathgeber to offer his contribution to the "business fable" genre. Kotter presents his framework for an effective corporate change initiative through the tale of a colony of Antarctic penguins facing danger-inspired, perhaps, by today's real-life global warming crisis (or, perhaps, by March of the Penguins' box office). Under the leadership of one particularly astute bird, a small team of penguins with varied personalities and leadership skills implement a thoughtful plan for coaxing the other birds in their colony through a time of necessary but wrenching change. The logic of Kotter's fictional framework is wobbly at times-his characters live and act very much like real penguins except that one carries a briefcase and another ("the Professor") cites articles from scholarly journals-and the whimsical tone will not be to everyone's taste. However, this light, quick read should fulfill its intended purpose: to serve as a springboard for group discussions about corporate culture, group dynamics and the challenges of change.

Excellent book for facing change

Excellent book for facing change:
I work as a psychiatrist with persons with intellectual developmental disorder(IDD) (earlier called mental handicap) and their families. The chief challenge of my work is to bring a positive approach to training efforts by the parents. As parents with a ‘special child’ parents face many challenges in bringing up and in planning for the child’s future. This responsibility is not what parents wanted, when the child was born into their family. The needs of ‘special child’ requires parents to think completely differently about a number of areas like day to day care, training the child, schooling, health care, planning for the future etc. It is these challenges that require you to take up the challenges and find new ways of succeed.
The central theme of my work, is to EMPOWER YOUR CHILD AND YOUR FAMILY TO FACE THE CHALLENGES.
It is in this context, that the book ‘Our iceberg is melting’ has a special meaning to you and your family.
Most parents pass through life denying the ‘special’ needs of your child. From the book, parents learn to accept the situation, by accepting your child’s ‘special’ needs that they can be of greatest help to him/her.
The book introduces the 8 principles of problem solving, which is useful to parents in a slightly modified form, as below.
1. Recognise the special needs of your child and importance of training
2. Pull together all members of your family
3. Develop a vision for your child and a Strategy
4. Reach out professionals for help and support
5. Acquire skills to train your child
6. Plan for Short-term gains
7. Don't give up
8. Make effort continuous and regular.

Kotter's Eight Step method of change in a fable

"Our iceberg is melting" is a small and very (too?) easy to read book that mainly consists of a fable about penguins who notice that they need to change. The penguins then happened to follow Kotter's eight-step process of successful change, so you can learn this eight-step process by learning from the penguins :)

The first 100 pages in the book is the fable about penguins who need to move to a new home as they discovered their iceberg is melting. They convince the senior management penguins and plan the change with a selected team of change agents. They manage to convince the other penguins that action is needed, get a quick win and manage to successfully change.

After that, there are a few pages explaining the eight-step process for change that was taken from John Kotter's research and his earlier books on managing change. The pages aren't enough to get an in-depth understanding of Kotter's research, but for that, you will need to read Kotter's other work.

The story was easy to read as it was simple (simplistic?). I found it mildly interesting. There wasn't much news in this book if you are already familiar with Kotter's research, but then again it doesn't take much time to read as the book is very thin. The book wasn't bad, but I would probably not recommend it to anyone either as it was definitively not a book that impressed me. I was thinking about 2 or 3 stars. Decided to go with 3 as it does seem to achieve its own purpose. Just ok.

A Good Story

This story was a great example of how to form a cohesive community, whether it be at work, in your home, etc. I read this for an assignment in my Foundations of Management class at the University of Iowa and I would recommend this to any leader as every leader has room to grow.
