Design Drawing a good beginning

As a beginning architecture student I found the book to be most helpful. It contains excellent illustations on shading and shadow techniques, and on developing architectural perspectives. The CD-rom version is especially helpful in explaining some of the basic concepts. I would highly recomend this book to those interested in design architecture.

it wouldn't be too much to say that this is one of the best books written for this purpose. the smooth transition from chapter to another and the gradual develpoment of skills and concepts makes reading through the book both exciting and benefitial. specially the chapters regarding perspective drawing. it gives u all the points and nearly every thing u might bump into. Far Outshines the NIGTC by Marshall

I am a pastor who uses commentaries in my sermon prep. I've found that Bock's stuff on Luke, and this volume in particular, as well as it's twin, encourage me with practical and technical information that is actually useful. For example, in the passage I just did for Palm Sunday, Bock does a great job of providing many worthwhile nuggets on Luke 19:28-40. I found some commentators wasting lots of space on issues like 'which part of the story was really spoken by Jesus' and things like that which are completely worthless for preaching...

Bock avoids all that stuff and goes to the meat of the issues at hand. For example, on the cross references he sometimes provides great insights as in when discussing Bethphage, one of the little towns Jesus was near when he sent his disciples to get the colt for him to ride on...that Bock points out the Aramaic meaning of Bethphage, which was 'House of unripe figs'. The cross reference in the Greek text to the pronouncement of judgment on the fig tree earlier in Luke was augmented by this information. The clear allusion then is to the judgment pronounced on the Jews for being an unripe fig tree by Jesus as he passes through 'the house of unripe figs' just before his Triumphal Entry into Jerusalem which ends up with his grief over Jerusalem's judgment for rejecting his kingship.
Bock has a lot of detail like this that I have not found as much of in most commentaries.

He also cued me in on the angaria concept without too much information so that I could see crucial points without wasting a lot of time on minutia. (Angaria was the custom of demanding citizens provide transportation...which may relate to the provision of the colt for Jesus triumphal entry).

This commentary is a wealth of very helpful information that is based on solid exegesis. His information provided also blends well with the sermon crafting process for those who are careful to use tried and true hermeneutical principles.

I have found that these two Luke commentaries (Baker Exegetical) are more helpful to me than even my NICNT on Luke...and I love that one as well.

A whole hearted recommendation here.

Gospel of Luke - Darrell L. Bock

Writing a review for Dr. Bock is a rather easy task. All his books are well researched, well written, scholarly, thorough, and never a disappointment. The Gospel According To LUKE is no exception. You may feel initially a little overwhelmed since the total number of pages to read is around 2,000! Every verse is addressed, clarified, and of the highest scholarly level. You are not likely to walk away from this commentary with any disappointments.

Each unit of the text begins with a Summary Title and Introduction of that particular unit, next Dr. Bock handles the Sources and Historicity, Exegesis and Exposition (each sub unit of text is also given a title to show that overall theme), another Summary, and finally an Additional Notes section in which Dr. Bock will handle in more detail certain verses within the text, often giving manuscript information that supports a particular reading, variant, or needed clarification of disputed words.

You will not find another commentary of LUKE that is more thoroughly covered than this book. I would recommend LUKE to anyone who takes understanding the Bible seriously. Depending on how much time you can devote to reading, LUKE will likely take you more than a week to read.

In fairness, each book has some drawbacks, but you have to be real picky to find one in this book! Personally, I prefer commentaries that spend more time in the original Greek text than LUKE covers. I realize that had Dr. Bock done that, the book would be another 2,000 pages, an unrealistic expectation. I would like to have seen more interaction with characters, places, and words/phrases that have a rich background. Typos are hard to find, no more than a few.

Dr. Bock is clearly one of the leading Evangelical scholars on LUKE. This Gospel is not the kind of book you might read and not need to consult time and time again. You wont need to read other commentaries of LUKE since Dr. Bock has already done that and often points out other scholars' viewpoints. I highly recommend LUKE. I gave this book a five-star rating primarily because there was not a sixth star.

I chose not to interact with Dr. Bock's positions and rich comments since that would realistically encompass the length of a small book itself. There are some great prices on Amazon for this book. Get it.

The New Standard Reference on Luke

Bock is insightful, exegetical and relevant. He has surpassed I. Howard Marshall in my opinion as well as Fitzmeyer. This is my preferred commentary on Luke, though the above mentioneed commentaries should also be consulted for serious research.

Helpful Reference and Introduction to Hebrew Syntax

I had to get this Hebrew Bible insert during the second semester of first year Hebrew, and as a required resource for my Hebrew Exegesis class in seminary. I have to say that I really like this quick reference resource. It gives a cliff-notes version of what intermediate Hebrew grammars and syntax textbooks will give you.

In a very concise way, this insert covers nominal, verbal, and clausal syntax. It breaks down into detail the various grammatical and syntactical nuances in each area, and gives a couple pertinent examples in Hebrew translated to English for each grammatical or syntactical feature.

I would say the most helpful feature of this book is to bridge the gap between first year grammars and syntax textbooks, between which there is quite a jump in how understandable and accessible they may be. This insert gives a good syntactical baseline from which to move on into the more advanced grammars to find more thorough discussions. I recommend it to every Hebrew student.

Finally in English

Jean-Claude Mezieres and Pierre Christin is two of the Rocks of European comics. I grew up with these and love every one of Jean-Claude Mezieres illustrated books.

The series is virtually without peers, being probably the first in the gene and also possible the best, without a doubt the early stories are the most amazing, with the later becoming more predictable. But since this is only the second in the series, it is simply wonderful.

You owe it to yourself to collect the complete series as it come out.

Having said that... here is the down side, these were written in French, while this is a UK publisher, this particular translation is not as elegant as one could hope for, it seems at times like it was a google translate thing with awkward sentences and prose. or like it was translated by a French high-school student with mistakes like "He spaceship" - guys in English most spaceships are genderless. Sigh. I really do not mean to insult the actual translator, who clearly is quite tallented, I realize it is a big challenging task, but I do feel there is room for improvement in terms of elegant English.
*No disrespect for French high school students, we all gotta learn sometime.
** YES, I am aware my written English is horrible, I did in fact read this series in the original language, but having lived 20 years in California, I can appreciate popper English translation, or the lack of same.

So, while I highly encourage you to purchase and read this particular comic and the series for that matter. I also politely, express the hope for a more inspired translation of the next editions.

second volume of this classic franco-belgium sf series

This volume is the second of the "Valerian" series (here called "Valerian and Laureline"), a classic and long running franco-belgium science fiction series. This series is credits with influencing several prominent science fiction movies.

Valerian and Laureline are spatio-temporal agents for the future earth empire Galaxity. They can travel in space and time from the 28th century. Valerian is from that time, but Laureline is actually a peasant girl from the 14th century who joined Valerian. In this story, they travel to an unexplored (by the Earth empire) star system comprised of a thousand planets. They see a system in decline with strange hooded "Enlightened" who seem to hold power.

They soon run afoul them and are helped by the merchant clan. It appears that these "Enlightened" are keeping control of technology in this system, and seem to be aware of Earth and appear to be a threat. Valerian and Laureline, working with a combined fleet of the merchant clans, soon reveal the secret of the "Enlightened" and this leads to a revolution and change in power, which may lead to a renewed society.

Cinebooks plans on reprinted the whole series, many (like this one) for the first time in English, at a rate of about 2 per year. I look forward to them, as I've only gotten 8 of the albums that have been printed in the US. The next 2 I have from previous attempts, but will get them to complete the set, as the translating may be better. I wish they would also reprint the actual first album, "Bad Dreams", which introduced Laureline.

Legendary Storytelling!

I grew up with these comics and I love them since they first came out in the 1970s. Every page is like an animated film in pictures, made with love and care to the sequential storytelling. As far as the stories go, they are like a great retro-futuristic mixture of John Carter of Mars, James Bond 007, and Doctor Who, if I can put it this way. Each episode is packed with action and adventure, so I highly recommend it to all classic sci-fi fans. It is family-friendly, good for all ages, and it is fun-in-all-sub-genres!

Pure excellence, but with a disclaimer

There are 87 other reviews here, so all I will do is offer the following breakdown for people interested in buying this book. Put yourself in one of these categories:

a) Competative runners: this is an increadible book, period. The best part about it is reading about a little tiny nuance in Quenton's running life and saying to yourself, "I know exactly what he's talking about, wow", which will happen literally hundreds of times. Your hopefully already-substantial appreciation for the sport will likely increase tenfold with this book.

b) The casual runner, recreational, or other athlete: this is an excellent book and is very highly reccomended. You probably will not appreciate it to it's fullest extent, but there are aspects of the story and how it is told that will be enjoyed by anyone with the capacity for excitement from sports or human physical endeavors.

c) The non-athlete: this book may not make sense to you. Not in the literary sense, but it may seem as though there is little direction in the story, and you might read it and then find yourself thinking that nothing interesting really happened, and you are not really to blame for this. There is still a good chance that you will find it enjoyable, but if you are looking for a piece of literature based on traditional merits (plot, character development, etc) there are likely better books out there for you to spend time on.

Clearly I thought this book was one of the best I've ever read. However, I hope this breakdown about who in particular might enjoy it the most was helpful.

The BEST book I've ever read!

I'm a sophomore in highschool and I'm also a extremely dedicated cross-country and track runner. This book has changed my life! The inspirational story of Quenton Cassidy's runner career left me breathless! The first chapter gave me goose-bumps because it decribed the start of a race perfectly. I read chapters from the book every night before a big race. Reading about Cassidy's determination gives any runner a boost. This book has to have the most accurate description of a runners mentality ever written. This is the best book about running I've ever read!
