Captain Daniel Parrott, captain of the 170-foot topsail schooner Pride of Baltimore II, is a professional mariner of 18 years' experience in tall ships. While earning a master's degree in Marine Affairs from the University of Rhode Island in 1998, Parrott undertook an in-depth, critical reexamination of the official inquiries and other records pertaining to the losses of the 316-foot bark Pamir in 1957; the 117-foot brigantine Albatross in 1961; the 117-foot bark Marques in 1984; the 137-foot schooner Pride of Baltimore in 1986; and the 125-foot brig Maria Asumpta in 1995. Each of these casualties is ingrained in the consciousness of serious sailors. Each of them involved loss of life - 112 lost crew in total. Each is a frequent topic of sailors' talk and speculations. Parrott's 320-page master's thesis aimed primarily to trace the impact of these tragedies on the development of sail training around the world. In the end he did more, providing sobering insights into the circumstances surrounding these losses. Tall Ships Down is an outgrowth of Parrott's thesis research, framing his inquiries and conclusions for a broad seagoing audience. This book will be required reading for all those involved in the growing sail-training effort around the world, of course, but it is also rich in interest and significance for all sailors and mariners. It outlines the history of each ship from its building, showing how mission changes, structural changes, rig modifications, and ownership changes can erode a ship's seaworthiness over time. Then we relive the final voyages, dissecting the circumstances of loss from forensic evidence and the memories of survivors. Carefully examined, the evidence shows casualties that have been considered acts of god probably resulted from an ignorance or neglect of age-old practices of seamanship. Cargo loose in holds, hatches unsecured at sea, freeing ports timbered shut, rig and stability changes carried out with insufficient regard to their possible impacts on seaworthiness - these and other factors emerge from Parrott's in-depth analysis as contributing factors. In the book's concluding section - in what amounts to an unforgettable seminar on seamanship--Parrott explores the impacts of ship stability, structural integrity, weather, human error, and standards of risk on safety at sea. In the end, Tall Ships Down is about the lore of the sea and the wisdom of seamanship, and in that regard its lessons are applicable to small sailboats as well as tall ships. The heartbreaking stories of these majestic ships have been subject to mystery and distortion. In some instances even the survivors could not explain what went wrong, and in others the official inquiries failed to articulate the most critical lessons hidden in the sudden, terrible catastrophes--until now.

Parrott traces the history of each ship from its building and early career through subsequent owners' modifications. His vivid re-creations of each final voyage dissect the circumstances of loss from forensic evidence, expert testimony, survivors' memories, and his own considerable experience. Carefully examined, the evidence shows that, contrary to some official findings, ignorance of and disregard for age-old practices of seamanship were at least as responsible for the tragedies as "acts of God." About the Author
Captain Daniel S. Parrott began a full-time professional maritime career in 1983 after earning a B.A. in English and Government from Colby College. Since then he has served as mate and master of various tall ships on missions around the world. Since 1998 he has commanded the 170-foot topsail schooner Pride of Baltimore II, a replica of an 1812 Baltimore clipper whose goodwill and educational missions have taken her throughout North and South America and to Europe and the Far East. Parrott holds a master of arts in Marine Affairs from the University of Rhode Island and a U.S. Coast Guard license for Master of Oceans, Motor, Steam and Auxiliary-Sail, 1600 Tons. Hometown: Baltimore, Maryland

why some ships sink

Readers seeking spine-tingling narratives of sea disasters will be disappointed with Tall Ships Down, because this brilliant book is instead a penetrating analysis of the circumstances of loss of several traditional sail ships in recent times. In five lucid essays, the author uses each sinking to illuminate the intersection of changes in nautical technological traditions, situational decision-making, and construction of sailing heritage. Beyond sailors or maritime buffs, this superbly written work should capture anyone interested in the sociology of technological change. The author is thoughtful and engaging, with his experience as captain of large traditional sail ships only one source of the book's extraordinary insights. Tall Ships Down will take its place as a classic alongside technology and culture studies such as Hilton's Eastland: Legacy of the Titanic. I'd consider it a shame if the author does not give us next a full-length treatment of the sinking of the Pamir, or a biography of Alan Villiers.

A Must-Read for Professional Sailors

This book is an outstanding study of five sail training vessel accidents. It is not only interesting, but full of important lessons for all sailors, particularly for professional sailors of traditional vessels. Captain Parrott has done the sailing world a great service by analysing these tragedies, not with romance or melodrama, but with compassion and empathy. As a seasoned professional himself, he investigates without being judgemental, and provides us with information we can use to prevent future accidents.

Must read for any serious sailor

I am new to sailing and not a captain and have not sailed the seven seas. However, this book is the best lesson any new sailor can learn because it is a very good analysis of why ships sink, any ship, not just a tall ship. The key is that these are very big ships that people equate with safety but the principles outlined in this book apply to all boats.

I feel sad for the lose of life due to these sinkings and the author makes it clear that prevention of future occurances is his goal in writing this book.

I highly recommend this book.

I started this audiobook a few days ago, and mid-way through disc 2 it's becoming evident that there's no way I'll make it to the end.

I honestly don't even know how to express my feelings towards the way she talks about the poor pitied people she encounters, the jobs she avoids (because she wants to slum it but not THAT much, right?) trailer trash, the jobs she takes and the "fat people hell" (WTF?). The GALL this woman has to pretend like she was truly living "the poor life" is nauseating. The book OOZES liberal elitist condescension- like I'm pretty sure she's the kind of person that would pull out the purell and wipe her hands in front of you after meeting anyone she felt was beneath her or donate to the poor- as long as she didn't actually have to, ya know, talk to them.

If you want to read about REAL LIFE just trying to make ends meet, this is a must read. I read it several years ago in one night because it gets you so involved in her day to day dialog....loaned it to someone and never got it back, so I ordered it again, and it reinforced my belief that you treat everyone good....you never know what the person behind the counter that is waiting on you is dealing with in her/his life. It really did change my thought pattern. Barbara Ehrenreich writes amazing well as she delves right into what it is to be the person doing somewhat of a thankless job. Worth your time to read if you care about others...

rich white privilege pretends to have to live off less

I found this book to be an abomination. It was sad to see that a book that has the potential to open eyes and change lives was used to show the privileged white society we live in. This book would be much better if she had approached the people and tried to get their stories rather than trying to create her own stories. You can't read that much into what she has written because she was only in each place for a month and sometimes went back home to her privileged life. The least she could have done was recognize that she is privileged in the book instead of writing as though she is better than everyone else. I was saddened to see that this is what qualifies as educational writing now a days. I do hope that if the author continues to write about a group of people she does not belong to she will think long and hard how she approaches it.

This is an outstanding book. While naturally oriented to strategic management of health care it is also a comprehensive framework to strategic management in general. The book's layout is that of a university textbook but it is also written in an enjoyable style. I read this book as a practitioner and not a formal student and found it extremely readable and helpful. The authors present both conceptual and practical tools for strategic management.

A Poignant and Revealing Look Into the Mind of An Alcoholic

As the father of a son in long-term recovery, I have read more than my fair share of books about addiction. In fact, the shelves in my bedroom are filled with addiction-related books. Books about the science of addiction. Twelve-step books. Guides to helping loved ones get clean and sober. Memoirs written by people in recovery. Etc. (If you're looking for a book on addiction, come on over. Chances are it's on my shelf and you're welcome to borrow it.)

Reading about people's struggles with--and triumphs over--addiction is especially fascinating to me. In the world of drug and alcohol abuse, everyone's story is so similar; but at the same time, everyone's story is so unique. When someone is brave enough to put their temporary train wreck of a life down on paper for the world to see, I can't help but get sucked in. Such was the case with Blackout: Remembering the Things I Drank to Forget by Sarah Hepola.

Hepola started drinking at an early age and fell in love with alcohol. This object of her affection eventually took control of her life, and for years she would drink to the point of blacking out. As you can probably guess from the title, that is the focus of much of this book. And Hepola holds nothing back.

"A blackout is the untangling of a mystery. It's detective work on your own life. A blackout is: What happened last night?"

In reality, as Hepola explains, a blackout happens when your blood becomes so saturated with alcohol that the part of your brain responsible for long-term memory--the hippocampus--shuts down. Your short-term memory still works, but with the long-term variety on strike, remembering what you did when you were blackout drunk becomes impossible.

"It's such a savage thing to lose your memory, but the crazy thing is, it doesn't hurt one bit. A blackout doesn't sting, or stab, or leave a scar when it robs you. Close your eyes and open them again. That's what a blackout feels like."

To say Blackout is a brutally honest memoir would be a bit of an understatement. Kind of like saying Taylor Swift has sold a few records. In her book, Hepola details--to the best of her recollection--numerous incidents from her drinking past, several of which end with her lying next to a stranger in bed.

Blackout is not all about Hepola sleeping with strangers, though. It's so much more than that. It's a poignant and revealing look into the mind of an alcoholic that lets the reader experience all of the raw emotions the author feels during her struggles. It's a tale of friendships and how they evolve--and devolve--over the years. Best of all, though, it's a success story.

The second part of this book is about Hepola's sobriety and the realizations that come along with it. "I finally understood alcohol was not a cure for pain; it was merely a postponement," she writes. It may have taken her years to get to that point, and there were many stops along the way; but recovery is a journey, and Hepola found her way.

The new sober life that she is living is challenging, but Hepola is happy. "Maybe at some advanced age, we get the gift of being happy where we are," she says. "Or maybe where I am right now got a whole lot easier to take."

Blackout is one of the best memoirs I've read. Like Kristen Johnston's Guts: The Endless Follies and Tiny Triumphs of a Giant Disaster, it treats a sensitive subject with unbridled honesty and humor. Yes, Blackout is a touching and, at times, heartbreaking story. It will likely make you cry. But it will also make you laugh out loud.

Sarah Hepola is the personal essays editor at Salon and has written for numerous other publications. But I have no doubt that Blackout: Remembering the Things I Drank to Forget is her tour de force. At least for now.

Read this book. You won't be disappointed.

Wonderful, witty, warm, human story

I can't believe that someone could be so honest about their life as Sarah Hepola is in her memoire to her life with the 'bottle'. Wickedly observant, Hepola has a strong and original voice, something she claims to have sought through the bottle. Fortunately for Sarah, and for those of us who read, she beat back her demons, revealing the lie that alcohol tells us, that like an abusive partner, we are nothing without it. I wish I could write well enough to describe the witty, honest, razor-sharp observations about her life that Sarah(I know I'm supposed to use her last name when writing about her, but after reading her book, I feel like she's a friend)gives us. It's one thing to live through hell, it's another thing to make art out of it like Sarah does.

I'm going to quote her, because like Carrie Fisher's book Wishful Drinking, no one can use ordinary words to such amazing affect. "This is true strength. To want what you have, and not what someone else is holding." page 209

"Maybe you're one of those lucky fellows who can slurp your whisky all afternoon and never disappear into the drink." page 2 When Sarah talks about her blackouts, she puts the feeling perfectly.

"My evenings come with trapdoors." page 2 "Women now empowered by every thing a woman does." page 10 How perfectly put. We women want power so badly that we grasp at bad habits like drinking and smoking as symbols of empowerment, when they are really things that will bring us down.

Sarah is reading a questionnaire to see if she's an alcoholic. "Next question: Do you ever drink to get drunk? Good lord. Why else would a person drink? To cure cancer?" page 11

"People on the winning team rarely nice that game is rigged." page 144 Sarah has just explained politics in one sentence.

And here's one of my favorite lines. "Now I realized what sadistic game drinking played. It built up your confidence at the very moment you were looking your worst." page 191 That one stung. What hasn't either been the one who drank to much and did a karaoke-pole-dance, or watched someone bring out their inner performer-minus the talent after a few shots?

And lastly, Sarah gives us the reason so many of us are afraid to quit drinking. "People who quit drinking become terrified they will lose their power. They believe booze make them the people they want to be. A better mother. A better lover. A better friend. Alcohol is one hell of a pitchman, and perhaps the greats lie is convincing us we need him, even as he tears us apart." page 204 No one could have said it better.

Thank you Sarah, for you wit and wisdom and courage to quite drinking so I can enjoy your writing for a long time.

A very compelling read
By TKH IN THE DEEP SOUTH
As a relapsed alcoholic I thought reading this book may help me return to sobriety. I didn't know what an effect it would have. I have never looked at why I drink, just that I do and hated it. The story makes you look deeply at your on life. The quote that stuck with me was " Alcoholism is bot genetics and culture. On both counts, the cards were stacked against me. Still, I know, I was the one who played the hand."
I have recommended this to people who don't have a drinking problem, when they ask me why I drink. Some get it, other get hung up on the details of the story. But it helped me, and that's what counts

About the Author
Sarina Chugani Molina currently serves as a faculty member at the University of San Diego, where she is the program coordinator and instructor of graduate level courses in the M.Ed. in TESOL program. She has had experience working with English Learners from a multitude of backgrounds both within the United States and in International contexts and has designed and developed an International TESOL certificate program, where she trains teachers in local and global contexts. She has published a text for teacher training entitled, Linguistics for Teaching English in Multilingual Contexts, an English as a Foreign Language textbook series entitled, Visual English and most recently, English for Global Citizens.

First off, Eisner does a great job of combining visual elements with his text in this book. The whole thing is illustrated with cavemen working on their storytelling technique, and I have to admit that the cavemen illustrations were great fun and always helped to clarify the how side of what he was saying in the text. Beautifully done. (Yes, I know, this is like saying, "Hey, y'know that Hemingway guy? Some of his stories were really good.")

Does it have any issues? Yes. It's 164 heavily illustrated pages. You can read it in an afternoon. And some of the illustrative pieces feel over-long for the point they are trying to prove. I hit the point on a couple of them where I found myself saying, "Yes, I get it. We needed the X in the beginning so we would understand Y now. Can we move on?" I also felt that, at 164 pages, he didn't really have the opportunity to go into depth on some areas. There's a point where he provided two bad examples of a comic script... and no good example. Aaaaah!

Even with those issues in mind, I have to give the book 4 caped crime-fighters out of five. It's well-written (though there are also some grammatical gaffs that make me want to scream), it's engaging, and it's instructive. Worth the read.

Useful tips for the beginner artists

[[VIDEOID:31057701]]Telling a good story is an incredibly difficult. In this book, Will Eisner shares with readers some of things to be aware of when tackling storytelling using comics.

He talks about techniques to use to help build a more convincing story. This would include comic tools like lettering, building momentum, using visual clues and writing. Examples include how props (i.e. guns) are held to reveal human characteristics.

There are lessons on how to engage readers, how readers think and mistakes to avoid. These are followed with lots of comic strip examples -- including a selection from different comic artists. Unfortunately, they aren't captioned page by page like it was done on his other books. The comic examples are great, you know it but you don't know why they work.

The book doesn't really go in depth into all aspects of storytelling. There's no talk on character development, story arcs, conflict management and specific story elements and tools.

Overall, this is still a very useful book for anyone who's just starting out and thinking of drawing their own comics.
