A GUIDE TO POTENTIAL MUSICAL "EXPERIENCES" OF A SPIRITUAL SORT

Kurt Leland is also the author of The Multidimensional Human: Practices for Psychic Development and Astral Projection, The Unanswered Question: Death, Near-Death, and the Afterlife, Otherwhere: A Field Guide to Nonphysical Reality for the Out-of-Body Traveler, etc.

He wrote in the Preface to this 2005 book, "Over the years I've received a great deal of information from Charles (a "nonphysical teacher") about how composing, performing, and listening to music can promote one's spiritual growth. Despite his apparent nonphysicality, Charles has been the best music teacher I've ever had. What I've learned from him lies behind everything I've written in this book... In (this book) I introduce the idea of transcendent musical experiences (TMEs), a term I've invented to describe the extraordinary emotional, spiritual, or mystical reactions we can sometimes have when composing, performing, or listening to music."

A Magical Mystery Tour

For years I had plans to listen to more classical music, but I did not know where to start. What would be a good recording and what a good piece? What composers would be good?

Normally these are questions without definitive answers, but there is something about Kurt Leland's intuition about this. I was deeply touched by the pieces he classified to be of the highest spiritual value. I fell in love with Bruckner's late symphonies and Wagner's preludes. This author enriched my life so much by sharing his deep connection with the music, I am very grateful for that.

I came to Kurt Leland by his other books - "OtherWhere" and "The Unanswered Question" - both accounts of his travels in the lands beyond the dreams. In these books he looks for answers to eternal questions. I was surprised that there is such a dimension to music, too! Spiritual, mystical experiences brought on by the enjoyment of music. This idea made me curious and so this book led me to new experiences and I can recommend taking this journey to everyone who loves music and believes it to be nourishment for the soul.

(Oh, and I became a fan of the rock band Yes, too!)

Really nice book with lots of pictures. Slightly let down by the anti-European bombastic tone of the author, but worth reading to look at McCardell's style and what she brought to the fashion industry.

Fascinating and a surprisingly easy read given the complex subject matter

Very well written book that is approachable to non-scientists even as it discusses such complex topics as evolutionary biology and paleoanthropology. The author raises very interesting points about the potential for evolutionary change as a result of modern technology varying from C sections and IVF to the rise of online dating. As genome mapping and analysis continue to progress, it should provide for further topics that I hope Mr. Solomon will explore in future books. Recommended for non-scientists and scientists alike.

About the Author

Dean John Champion is Professor of Criminal Justice, Texas A & M International University; Laredo, Texas. Dr. Champion has taught at the University of Tennessee-Knoxville, California State University-Long Beach, and Minot State University.� He earned his Ph.D. from Purdue University and B.S. and M.A. degrees from Brigham Young University.� He also completed several years of law school at the Nashville School of Law.

����������� Dr. Champion has written over 35 texts and/or edited works and maintains memberships in eleven professional organizations.� He is a lifetime member of the American Society of Criminology, Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences, and the American Sociological Association.� He is a former editor of the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences/Anderson Publishing Company Series on Issues in Crime and Justice and the Journal of Crime and Justice.� He is a contributing author for the Encarta Encyclopedia 2000 for Microsoft.� He has been a Visiting Scholar for the National Center for Juvenile Justice and is a former president of the Midwestern Criminal Justice Association.
