I have reviewed over 600 products, and this one really stands out. In case you're wondering--No, I do NOT know the author, nor has this review been requested. I thought the book would be good, but not THIS GOOD! There is a good reason why every reviewer is giving this book 5 Stars.

▲ I was really intrigued by the intricate cover. This is a hint about the fun journey that is about to start. To open the book, the author provides an extensive section on suggestions for teachers helping the beginning artist. I saw lots of good ideas for encouraging the artist. From the Introduction: "Through Art we have the opportunity to showcase our personal strengths in a meaningful way."

▲ Each drawing lesson has 3 parts: "KNOW," "UNDERSTAND," "DO." I thought this was an excellent idea--Theory first, then action. There is also a "VOCABULARY" section to introduce new terms. Excellent idea!

▲ As you might expect from an art book, the artwork is excellent. The author provides a step-by-step process for each lesson. Excellent attention to detail. I think even I could learn art this way!

▲ Many really fine and creative objects to draw. Some of my favorite drawing lessons: The "Ancient Masks" section, the "Basketball Hoop" drawing, and the "Foreshortened person" lesson. See also the "Back of the Hand" lesson.

▼ A few suggestions: I did not see a Table of Contents. That would have been helpful. Also, the book ends abruptly (after the spider web.) Normally, there is a "wrap-up" of some sort.

▲ Honestly, Catherine Holmes has produced a MAGNIFICENT book for students and teachers alike. Honestly, I am in awe of the author. The amount of time spent producing this book must have been enormous. I did not see even one advertisement, which is astonishing.

Great for beginners (including the instant gratification kind)

A discussion with a friend got me interested in trying out sketching and drawing as a fun and creative outlet. So I spent about an hour researching drawing and sketching ebooks. Since I wasn't actively reading my previous Kindle Borrow Library selection, I focused on Kindle Library ebooks. Of all those, I narrowed it down to 3-4 promising. The "How to Draw Cool Stuff" was one of them. The "Look Inside" preview gave me enough confidence to give it a try, and I'm glad I did!

This is a great eBook for two groups of beginners: 1) the instant gratification type: you just got your pencils and sketch pad and you just want to start drawing things. You don't want to learn the history of art right now, you just want to draw. You can flip through this ebook and look at all the drawing exercises. Just draw whatever you feel like, skip whatever may look complicated or uninteresting. In this fashion, I went through the whole book and filled up a giant sketchpad page with small drawings. Okay, drawing attempts is a better description, but my bad art is not what's reviewed here :)

The second group of beginners are ones who want to learn more, in an easy to digest format. Each section has a learning section of text followed by the drawing exercises. A smooth and stress free way to learn. The drawing exercises are step by step, except for the last part, where you add the shading and the finishing touches. Those are not explained step by step. This can be a bit jarring, since you go from step by step to the final step being a leap of creative faith. Especially for the uninitiated. The book has a section upfront on shading that can help, but still, some may find this jump a bit jarring.

The other minor nitpick is that some of the drawings include erasing as part of the steps. I understand this is a beginner's book, but still, some may find erasing as some kind of "cheating". As a workaround, you can look at the steps ahead, and try to draw it without the parts that need erasing. But the whole point of the erasing is that it can help beginners draw things quickly. So we can't have it both ways :)

The ebook is comfortable to read on the 7 inch Kindle Fire tablet (or anything larger), and you can zoom on the pictures whether you have your device in portrait or landscape orientation. They are very readable. Since this ebook has both drawings and text-teaching, you can use an e-ink e-book reader to read the text parts. The drawings are more challenging on an e-ink e-reader. Some of them have a semi-usable image zoom option (Paperwhite, classic Kindle with Keyboard), so if you are patient, you can also go through the drawing exercises with those. The tiny basic Kindle does not have image zoom, so it's not very useful if you are doing the drawing exercises (but still fine if you want to read the text parts). Regardless, it is a better experience on a tablet.

Help for the artistically challenged

This was a very detailed step by step book. I almost felt like it was a "how to draw for dummies" without treating me like I am dumb! I can see how others with more artistic talent would enjoy this book as much as I (the artistically challenged did).

As a teacher I appreciate how she explained what was being shown, showed it, had you try it, and then gave a perfect "assignment" for you to practice.

Really very well done.

Best Chicken Cookbook

After actually trying some of the recipes in A Chicken In Every Pot, I can wholeheartedly endorse this cookbook. The Barcelona Brown Bag Chicken is something a non-professional cook like me can do easily, and still impress my family and friends. And the Bangladesh Drums are to die for. The recipes are also great for someone who doesn't like to cook, like my husband, or for someone who loves to experiment with cooking, like me. This book's wide variety of international recipes shows you how to turn chicken into something you'll want to eat every night. Very few of these recipes appear in other chicken cookbooks I've seen, so you'll want to have this book in your collection.

Short but informed

A book that is slight in pages but strong on content.

Terence Craig and Mary Ludloff take the reader on a swift but informed journey across the landscape of modern privacy issues arising from our online life. Predictably the book is full of caution and warning - it is no surprise that our private information is doing the rounds in places that we don't know, and governments are encroaching our privacy under the banner of national security. Orwell's Big Brother isn't alive and well - he has been replaced by an even more worrisome industry of data aggregators who make their living by combining our on-line information from multiple sources.

The strong points of the book are many. A cogent discussion of the issues, a review of the various approaches to legislation in the US, Europe, China and even my home nation, Australia. And what I liked most - a balanced assessment of the risks and a nod towards the upside - all that 'free' stuff we get on the web courtesy of surrendering our personal information.

The downsides of the book? Not many, although I would have liked the authors to have shared some more of their insights into what the world might look like in ten years hence. Not crystal ball gazing, just what some of the implications might be depending on how current developments play out.

If you have a couple of hours to spare (the book is under 100 pages) and you want to get your head around the hard facts of the current privacy dilemmas arising from your online life, then you could do a lot worse than cast an eye over this publication. If you want something philosophical with big picture stuff and something to send shudders up your spine, then this is probably not what you are after.

The Writing Muddles the Content

This book was purchased as a required text for a course on privacy. I was appalled at the poor writing and the heavy reliance on wikipedia links. The content would have been more informative if presented as an outline. I say this because the content would have been more clear and more easily understood if not interrupted by the poor quality prose. In addition to numerous grammatical errors, the writing is disrupted by overly frequent inline website citations which would have been better included as footnotes.

Readers should also be aware that the tone is far from objective. It deviates from the bulk of O'Reilly's outstanding library in that it is not a scholarly presentation but is instead infused with the authors' personal negative viewpoint. It's possible that they are intentionally attempting to create a demand for their business services by inspiring fear.

My concern about the rigor of their sources was highlight by the inclusion of a reference from [...]

In general, there is not enough information and insight in this book to warrant spending money on it. Instead, if you are interested in a superficial listing of agencies and constraints, I suggest skimming through a library copy or better yet, do an online search on "digital privacy" to retrieve more informative online sources.

Privacy, What Privacy?

I found this book a real eye-opener. It is more than likely a quick read if you purchased the paperback, but I had the digital version (94 pages), in which all references (and there are a lot of references) are clickable. Which makes it too easy to get lost in all additional information. I think most of us, in our haste to "get to the content", rationalize that it is only an email, birthday, or zipcode and that's no big deal. If we only knew what was really going on. That is where this book comes in, in a big way. I feel that Terrence and Mary did a great job in presenting the "facts", each covering their share of a wide spectrum of (global) opinions, in respect to their own views. They actually share their own point of view at the end of the book, which an attentive reader would catch a hints of throughout the book. As for me, I was too caught up in disbief in how our data is actually being used. I can see why it's an absolute gold mine for big businesses, governments and the like. The Internet truly is the modern version of the wild, wild west, and though there are those who would try to regulate it, there is just too much data already out there. In fact, both authors are pretty much in agreement on this point, "Once your information is out there, it is too hard to control who uses it, and what it's really used for..." (paraphrased). I would say this is a great read, I loved it, and it leaves me wanting more (information, that is). At the very least, the readers of this book will be MORE aware.

About the Author

Lois Oppenheim is University Distinguished Scholar, Professor of French, and Chair of the Department of Modern Languages and Literatures at Montclair State University where she teaches courses in both literature and applied psychoanalysis. She is Scholar Associate Member of the New York Psychoanalytic Society and Institute and Honorary Member of the William Alanson White Society. She is the author of many books, including Imagination from Fantasy to Delusion (Routledge, 2012)―awarded the 2013 Courage to Dream Prize from the American Psychoanalytic Association―and A Curious Intimacy: Art and Neuro-Psychoanalysis (Routledge, 2005).
