Multiple Annotators Make this Collection Enjoyable

I am a 2300 rated player and purchased this book on Botvinnik's final World Championship (WC) clash after realizing that I was less familiar with the games of this match than any other WC match. I cannot overstate the historical significance of this short collection.

A major strength of this collection is the variety of annotators. Games are naturally annotated not only by Botvinnik and Petrosian, but also by legendary players like Kasparov, Kortchnoi, and other strong GM's like Vladimir Akopian. While the games of this match were overwhelmingly positional struggles, it is quite interesting to see how these champions describe similar positions that arose in the match.

The final section of the book really makes it stellar. There is a section where Petrosian discusses his views on Botvinnik's previous WC matches. We are also treated to a selection of previous Botvinnik-Petrosian games as well as eight training games Botvinnik played before the match. The book concludes with snippets from Botvinnik's famous 'secret notebook'.

Though only around 140 pages, the book contains many interesting highlights and is a must have for a chess collector.

I would prefer more comments by Botvinnik or Petrosian

I like the book completely, but only half of the games are commented by Botvinnik or Petrosian. Both masters offer insights of the playing circumstances that no one could note. Both, express moves decisions that defines the outcome of the game with verbal comments, short variations, based on their inner conception of the game, their personal theory of chess. That's what I like in the old masters comments. They don't pretend that you know, or is totally clear, why this move wins strategically, but explain them with pure chess principles. Also they made clear that in analysis, it's not the longest variable which contains the truth. They don't pretend to "solve the chess" in a comment with 20 moves of variations, seeking what it's call the "truth". If the position is equal, any equivalent course will result in an equal situation and 10 concrete moves will not change that. And only if you can trace the route to win or to obtain great advantage, you can claim that it's a winning position. Any other circumstance will derive in a draw. I recommend the book. This match end the Bovinnik era. A great era in history of chess.

A worthy ending to a great series.

I had bittersweet feelings diving into this one, knowing it was the last book in Pepper's saga. The story picks up more than a year after the end of Pep Talks. Pepper and Jace are still apart, but otherwise, life in Brockton has settled into normal, well a new normal. One where Pepper's friends are in stable relationships while she is still single and focused on running and her future. While she can tell Jace has changed, she's too afraid of his ability to break her to let him back in. Jace is reeling from the biggest mistake he ever made and at a loss for how to fix things with Pepper.

This book is relatively short at only 180 pages and I would have liked more. The story itself is fine, building to an intense climax and wrapping up loose ends before rolling into a satisfying conclusion. But there are elements that are shared in summary form after they happen and would have been great to have been shown in real time. Other than that, I like the character development, the overall arc, and the emotions this story evoked.

Plot
There's a lot going on in this installment. Primarily, it's the story of Pepper and Jace and how they navigate the ever changing waters of their lifelong relationship. Both so clearly love the other, but Pepper is understandably gun-shy. Pepper is being pursued by Clayton Dennison and that drives some obvious conflict between Jace and Pepper. It's also the story of what happens with the rest of their lives. With Jace entering his last year of college, an NFL draft might be in his future, and Pepper needs to determine if her future lies in professional running. All plot points are addressed in a believable manner, but as I said, I did want more for some of them. I would have loved to see more struggles with some of the decisions that are made and more of Pepper's running.

Characters
The characters are still wonderful, fully-developed, and complex. I love the changes that both Pepper and Jace go through as they mature, and I love that Bunny is still Bunny, Pepper's wild, pot-smoking gran.

Writing
Other than including more exposition than I wanted, we get inside Pepper's head the way we always do, and I still love her thought processes.

Ending
I loved the ending. This is a satisfying conclusion to the series. Yes, I'll miss all the characters, but closure is good, too.

Top Five Things I love about Pepped Up Forever:
1. Buns. Everything about Pepper's fun-loving crazy grandmother is amped up in this finale.

2. Jace. He's got his issues, but his love for his family and friends is never in doubt -- only how he deals with his issues.

3. Pepper. She's still tenacious even if a bit unsure, but watching her process everything the way she does is always a treat.

4. Wes and Zoe. They're incredibly cute. I'd love a series with these two starring in it.

5. The ending. So perfect. And yeah, I still want more, but I'm finally okay with letting go.

Bottom Line
A worthy ending to a great series.

Loved this series. It is one of my favourites. Everything gets sorted, after another crazy person causes grief for Pepper but everything ends on a great note. I will forever love Bunny Jones. She is a character I would love to have in my life. Bunny rocks!

Good final book to a great series. Will miss Pepper!

Pepped Up Forever is a good final book to the series where everything gets tied up in a neat little bow, but left me feeling a little empty. It was a little bit like drinking champagne to celebrate, but the champagne was kind of flat. It's hard to admit that when I really enjoyed the series overall.

Pepper and Jace ended up in a good place, both individually and in terms of their relationship. Love Bunny and how things worked out with Wes, Ryan, Zoe, and all of Pepper's former and current running mates. The Clayton thing is a bit puzzling.

I'm sad to admit that I liked the first three books in the series better. In previous books, I really enjoyed the running aspects of the story, and felt it helped drive the development of Pepper's maturation and relationships with others. Instead, the final book focused on Pepper and Jace's relationship. I thought the final book was less nuanced and often the reader was told exactly what to think. It was almost as if the author wrote the fifth book in reaction to the fourth book and the reaction to that book, rather than to the overall series. Also, I thought Pepper was regressed a bit at times, and was uncharacteristically immature and suspicious. At times, it was a little tough to reconcile the Jace that was in this story versus the other stories (particularly in the first three books). Acknowledging Pain And Loss And Working Toward More Honest Living

Written in 1992, when perceptions of LGBT lifestyles were culturally far worse than today, this book was an uncommon voice.

"Coming Out Within" - by Craig O'Neill, a Catholic Priest, and Kathleen Ritter, a psychotherapist and professor at CSU Bakersfield - asserted a premise (in 1992) that many (if not nearly all) non-heterosexuals developed their gender, sexual, familial, work, role, and relationship identities in a "heterosexual-only" Western Culture environment. In the late 20th Century, LGBT self-images were often created in dramatic and constant incongruities with popular "acceptable imagery."

It is important for everyone, in any era, to have easily available access to healthy portrayals, imagery, and written contextual reasoning to support our honest feelings and desires.

If you want to understand why I work so consistently to highlight intelligent, healthy, and considerate LGBT images of relationships and sexuality, then reading this book will give you more cultural imagery and self-perception concepts to consider.

I would not be surprised if Deborah Tolman, who in 2005 wrote "Dilemmas of Desire: Teenage Girls Talk About Sexuality," read "Coming Out Within" before writing her introduction to her book. Tolman's discussion of a "heterosexual exclusive" culture has many similarities to the authors' ideas in "Coming Out Within".

"Coming Out Within" may help homosexuals recognize some of their likely unrealized hurt, loss, and pain they took onto themselves as "expected" or "part of being gay in a straight society." The authors suggest it may be more healthy to acknowledge the mistreatment and unfairness they've grown accustomed to receiving from heterosexually-dominant families and communities.

"Some lesbians and gay men achieve success in the workplace at the expense of their integrity. They pretend that they are not who they are and, as a result, live distant from their inner beings, often in a world of fear and denial. The trappings of success that come with buying into a hetrosexually based life image are exchanged for the turmoil of incongruity and the pain of living separated from their souls. Peter Tchaikovsky described this well when he said, 'All that is left is to pretend. But to pretend to the end of one's life is the highest torment.' " p. 26

The authors then outline a therapeutic 8-Step process from "Loss to Transformation," giving many illustrative and practical examples each step of the way.

I don't recommend the book because I think their 8-phase healing process is the way to address related issues. I recommend the book because their 8-phase process is one more way to consider addressing related issues. The authors also wisely recommend individual counseling in addition to taking self-therapeutic steps.

This is a POWERFUL book!

I am not overexaggerating when I say that this is one of the most helpful books that have been published for lesbian and gay folk trying to understand the experiences involved in coming out. It was of profound help in my own journeying through the dynamics and issues involved in coming to terms with the changes involved in coming out. Spiritually reassuring. Very helpful for parents of gay and lesbian folks too.
