Great tips but outdated plans

This is a great book for anyone interested in learning how to make kites. The only downside to the book is that the stunt kite plans are very dated. Since this book was published in 1996, dual line stunt kites have progressed in aerodynamic design and materials. There are plans for kites on the internet that utilize these new sail shapes and framesets that (in my opinion) would allow a person to make a kite that would provide a more enjoyable flying experience.

I think this book is great for people who are interested in stunt kites. It is very detailed and has accurate pictures. This book has pretty good tips. It lists one liners and different gadgets that are perfect for the beach.

Interesting and fun

You’ve heard their names – Christopher Columbus, Pocahontas, Galileo, Beethoven, etc., and you know something about who they were. But, do you know how they croaked? In this interesting book, Georgia Bragg takes nineteen famous people and gives us the rest of the story, finishing each victim up with a two-page list of interesting and silly facts.

Overall, I found this to be a pretty good book. The author dies a good job of presenting the croak-ees of her book in an interesting and fun manner. My only complaint against this book is that I wish it had more people in it, especially twentieth century people.

Wonderful Intro to History and the Biology of Death

I bought this book for my two daughters who love to read and go through books like buzzsaws. The eldest has read this book about 20 times, the youngest is just reading it for the 3rd or 4th time. They love it and they learn a lot about history. The book is well presented and sets all the personalities in their historical contexts with good drawings, but is not light on content. They learn history and the biological demise of important people. It is a great way to foster interest in history and non-fiction reading. From this book both of them have branched off into reading more about HenryXIII, George Washington, and other figures.

A kabbalistic travelogue

This is another one of those 20th century classics that I am delighted to see back in print. First published in 1969, it remains an excellent and very readable introduction to Jewish mysticism as practiced by Jews in modern times. I discovered it in the early 1970's and literally wore out my first copy. It was one of the pivotal books in my own personal quest, and remains a favorite today.
The "half mystic" in the title is Rabbi Herbert Weiner (Reform), who describes his personal interactions with various Jewish mystics and schools of thought, ranging from the highly academic university professor, Gershom Scholem, to the Breslover Hasidim in Israel, to an eccentric old scholar living in obscurity on East Broadway. There's a fascinating interview with the late Lubovitcher Rebbe (Menachem M. Schneerson) back in the days when he still met with seekers one-to-one, a personal invitation to a Belzer Hasidic wedding celebration, and a dip in the holy mikveh used by 16th-century Rabbi Isaac Luria. Especially interesting are Weiner's experiences among various Hasidic groups in Jerusalem, in a more spiritual time before the "ultra-Orthodox" became so highly politicized. In short, the book is a sort of travelogue through two critical decades, bridging the kabbalah from the last generation to remember the pre-Holocaust world, and into the modern era. For this reason alone, it's a very valuable testimony.
But don't get me wrong --- this book is not just history. Weiner's quest is as valid today as it was over 30 years ago. Interwoven with his personal experiences are clear explanations of the teachings, given in the context where he first received them. His quest to unravel the secrets is your quest also. Little by little, the book teaches you about kabbalah in a very practical, down-to-earth way. Highly recommended!

He who touches, is touched.

9 1/2 MYSTICS: THE KABBALA TODAY (1969, reissued 1997) by Rabbi Herbert Weiner is one of my favorite, most cherished books. Rabbi Weiner decided many decades ago to find out what constitutes a Jewish mystic, what comprises mysticism in the Jewish tradition, and how the Kabalah (he renders it as "Kabbala") fits into all of it. This has always been the biggest book of my life and I really can't say why I never dared review it until now.

In no way is this book dated except the passages that address the problems in Israel. Weiner gives a brief history of the Seven Day War, for example, which was a very raw nerve at the time he wrote about it. However, my favorite passages in this book are absolutely the descriptions of Weiner's teachers and friends; it is one unusual case in which name-dropping is a joy because you know something good is coming.

I love Weiner's two-ended spectrum, almost as if he's trying to illustrate the Tree of Life with his own experiences: at the beginning of this journey he meets Rabbi David ha Cohen, an eminent Kabalah teacher - ha Cohen warns him about "touching" sacred things and the dangers. In the center of this beautiful story of learning and research is Weiner's years of study with Rabbi S. Setzer, a preeminent Kabbalist who seemed in some ways to be a future version of Weiner. At the end is the sad, sad story of Weiner's falling out with a beloved friend, Rabbi Zvi Yehuda Kook, the son of the 1st Chief Ashkenazi Rabbi of Israel, Rabbi Abraham Yitzakh Kook.

In between, in these lovely pages, you'll read Weiner taking a two-pronged struggle and laying it bare for the reader. Firstly, his struggle to find out about Jewish mysticism, and perhaps what a Jewish mystic is supposed to be. The second, Weiner is slowly executing a pattern of Kabalah learning, safe to share with the average reader. Should the reader prove unworthy, I have found, interest will be lost anyway, and the unworthy won't read this. What Weiner reveals is another joy, the true gem of the Jewish People. TORAH is one's life, of course, and is in itself indescribable - but the Kabalah is like the spice of life, the honey, the depth and the Truth for those who are worthy to know.

Weiner knows Gershom Scholem, which has always kept me in awe. He is close to Rabbi Adin Steinsaltz, whom I have also studied, which is just as awesome. If you can get it, read Steinsaltz's The Thirteen Petalled Rose. I always think of the Lily, the Fleur-de-Lis, with its 13 petals and a powerful symbol of Israel, but Steinsaltz means something else. Kind of a shame Weiner wrote so little about him. What I personally did not like, though I have studied it closely, is Weiner's mixing it up with the Lubavitcher Rebbe Menachem Mendl Schneersohn. I can't say if it is Lubavitch or the rebbe-worship, but I just do not like the subject at all.

Much better is to enjoy Weiner's interactions with the living, and his understanding of the dead (such as the Baal Shem Tov and Rabbi Nachman). It's also fun to read and catch up with Rabbi Weiner in his new postscript of the early 1990s, in which he half-confusedly describes what it is like to be southern California's resident "Kabbalist". It is hilarious. In this book you will get a deeper feeling for the Kabalah - mainly what you will get is an understanding of the Jewish soul, the yearning, the loss and the confusion. What is best is that each of those sad things has a powerful, wonderful counterpart - an "opposite number", you might say.

No one writes about that as beautifully as Weiner. Even his being Reform - the source of the break between him and Rabbi Zvi Kook - does not get in the way of the clarity or respectfulness here. Weiner is a true Master, not at all half in any way. A true mystic, and very likely much moreso than some of the people he encounters here.

This may very well be, in the distant future, a tiny newer piece of Kabalah which people will study and decipher. Get it. THIS is the reason books were invented!

Useful Intro to Hasidism

Herbert Weiner does a nice job of surveying the development and condition of Hasidic and mystical Judiasm. The book itself was written in the mid to alte 1960's, and the afterword rolls you forward to the 80's. Even so, for someone interested in Jewish mysticism and the development and emergence of Hasidism in the 17th through 20th Centuries, the book offers colorful commentary, great background, and homespun storytelling. There isn't a ton on kabbala in the book - but the emphasis on mysticism and Hasidim and the interplay with the kabbala are explored at the outset. If you have interest in the subject, particularly the modern history of Jewish mysticism, this is a must read.

About the Author
Terri Jo Swim, Ph.D., is professor and Chair of the Department of Educational Studies at Indiana University-Purdue University in Fort Wayne (IPFW). She has taught in higher education institutions for nearly 20 years, and has worked in private child care centers, university-based laboratory infant/toddler and preschool programs, and summer camps with children ages birth to 13 years. She was also the co-editor of THE HOPE FOR AUDICITY: RECAPTURING OPTIMISM AND CIVILITY IN EDUCATION. Her current research interests include infant-toddler and preschool curriculum, Reggio Emilia, documentation, and teacher education.

Homophone fun with Mr. G!!

Most people over the age of, say, 28 will remember Fred Gwynne most for his role as the flat-headed, bolt-necked Herman Munster on the TV show, "The Munsters." He also starred in a number of miscellaneous movies and "Car 54, Where Are You?" However, many people do not know that he is a gifted and very humorous author of children's picture books. "The King who Rained" is but one of his fine works for children that plays with language, especially homophones.
Homophones are words that sound alike but are spelled differently or have multiple meanings, and this book is full of `em!! A little girl explains all the odd things she hears her family say, like "Daddy says he has a mole on his nose". The accompanying illustration has a tall, thin man (who looks profoundly like Mr. Gwynne himself) with a small, brown, furry subterranean mammal perched on his nose. Similarly, the girl's mother is "a little horse" sometimes and asks for the throat spray ("when I bring it to her, she calls me a little deer"). The title of the book itself is a wonderful play on words as well.
Mr. G. has written and illustrated three books of homophones, "The King Who Rained" as well as "A Chocolate Mouse for Dinner" and "A Little Pigeon Toad". He's also written a beautiful and very funny book about a girl taking her mutt dog to a dog show, "Easy to See Why."
All these books by Mr. Gwynne are easy to read and lavishly illustrated with large pictures. They're perfect choices to bring into any classroom to illustrate English homonyms and idiom. When I use them in class, I encourage students to create their own (of course, I also love to tell them a bit about Mr. Gwynne the actor, too!!). This and other works by Mr. G. come highly recommended!!

Thoroughly enjoyable

I came across this book about 25 years ago quite by accident and have treasured it (and all the Fred Gwynne books) since. Remember Fred? He played Herman Munster on TV... and was in the old "Car 54, where are you?" show. Little did I know he was a talented children's author/illustrator. The drawings are as precious as the text... some of them resemble Fred (and I assume his children as well). His perception of how children think of routine phrases like "pigeon-toed" or "a king who reigned [rained]" are delightful. My children are grown now, and I will share these with my grandchildren. They are wonderful.

Excellent,Sweet Romance........Murder/Mystery........Kept Me Guessing Until The End

I pre-ordered this book and it showed up on my kindle last night.....It's of my genre, but it's a Victorian, period piece that I don't normally read......I ended up thoroughly enjoying it.......

This novel by author, Amanda Quick turned out to be an excellent , twisted romance/ murder mystery.........The story was intriguing and riveting page turner one I got started.........It had a very scheming and disturbing elaborate plot......Great depiction of two strong willed, stubborn, opinionated characters, Calista and Trent Hastings who played well of each other.....Intertwined into a "sweet romance"..........I also loved the witty banter between the two of them at times.......The Prologue or opening of the book was unique and reminded me a little of the 1951 movie, 'Stranger On A Train".......It was a great set-up to the story.........Two men unhappy with their rich wives make an offer to each other they can't refuse.........The author also gives you so many quirky, other characters that anyone could have been a suspect.......The ending was an action packed, shock that I never could have guessed.........

The story starts out with two men Nestor Kettering and Dolan Birch meeting at a unnamed place....Then making a quid pro quo deal......Then you meet Calista Langley, an independent, strong willed, woman running an "Introduction Match Making Agency"...........Who is obsessively being stalked and left "Memento Mori" items, such as a "Coffin Bell", "Letters", "Tear Catcher" as a "Warning" ........She thinks it's her ex Nestor, who left her a year ago when he found out she wasn't well off.......Now he's married, with discontent, wants back in her life and won't take no as a answer........Into the agency steps, well known , reclusive, ( you will read why ) crime author , Trent Hastings.......He is very strong will and stubborn too......So first meeting between the two doesn't go well...........Eventually, as fate as it, the two will join up to investigate and find who is leaving these very, sinister clues for Calista, that are now becoming more threatening.........She also has her 19 year old brother, Andrew helping out too..............What they will find out is just pure "Evil" ........Three governesses are found murdered with the same MO, that Calista is getting...........The more the two start ruffling feathers while poking around for answers........The more the body count rises............Will they find the psycho, killer before Calista's time is up.......

'Til Death Do Us Part is deliciously atmospheric and oh so much fun to read. Amanda Quick has deftly blended romance, mystery, and Victorian London’s obsession with death and spiritualism into one captivating tale.

I’ve been a fan of Ms. Quick’s work for years, and 'Til Death Do Us Part is quite different in tone from her historical romances that I devoured in the '90s. What remains the same are the characters at the heart of the tale: smart, unique people who don’t fit into the molds society would put them in. Calista Langley is a businesswoman ahead of her time. She runs an “introduction” agency, where intelligent, likeminded people can meet and form friendships and perhaps even find romance. Calista has made a good life for herself and her brother, but when someone begins to send her momento mori (items made for those in mourning) with her initials on them, she’s shaken. It’s clear someone is stalking Calista, but she doesn’t know why. Luckily for her, Calista has just made the acquaintance of Trent Hastings, author of the popular Clive Stone detective novels. Though their initial meeting doesn’t go well, the two of them are intrigued by one another, and when Trent learns of Calista’s stalker, he insists on helping her.

On their own, Calista and Trent are incredibly appealing characters. Both of them are hardworking and intelligent, and though Trent is a bit rough around the edges, it’s clear that he, like Calista, has a good heart. Neither of them are perfect, and that added to their appeal. What’s more, Trent charmed the heck out of me with his wry sense of humor and the trials and tribulations that go along with being a popular author. As a couple, Trent and Calista are fantastic. They’re perfectly matched physically and intellectually, and their love story is sensual, sweet, exciting, and – even with death and danger threatening them at every turn – just plain fun to read.

Even if you took out the wonderfully engaging romance between Calista and Trent,'Til Death Do Us Part would be impossible to put down. The Victorian London of Ms. Quick’s creation, with its gothic undertones and shadowy threats lurking around every corner, is completely addictive. I was so immersed in the tale that I read the story in one sitting, loving the chills and thrills each page provided. I cannot reveal much about the story without spoiling it for readers, so I’ll leave it at this: whether you like historical romance, romantic suspense, gothic novels, or all of the above, you don’t want to miss 'Til Death Do Us Part!

not as good as her usual

Not as good as her others of this genre. Not as original; various pieces are borrowed from her other books. The lead characters just aren't as interesting as usual and their attraction to each other seems to not ring true. It's an okay read, but unlike, say, the Lavinia Lake and Tobias March books, I won't be reading this one again.

Military regimes are not at all unusual in Argentina, but those that ruled from 1976 to 1979 were unique in the number of civilians, mostly young people, who were kidnapped, jailed, tortured, and/or murdered because of their political beliefs. Late in 1977 the author was taken into custody by the army and sent to "the little school," one of many camps where dissidents were "taught" their "lessons." Imprisoned without charges, she spent almost a year blindfolded and bound, cut off from friends and family, including her child, until being inexplicably released. In her book The Little School: Tales of Disappearance and Survival in Argentina Alicia Partnoy describes her imprisonment in the 1970's in Argentina. She was a political activist who did not like the way her government treated people of Argentina. Partnoy was determined to stand up against the government despite the risk of being arrested. Once captured and brought to the Little School of imprisonment by the military, Partnoy describes the daily torture inflicted on the activists. The captors blindfolded and tortured prisoners on daily basis. Prisoners were molested and nearly starved. The conditions she describes under which they lived were horrible and difficult to tolerate. Despite the oppression, Partnoy showed that she is a survivor by standing up to her captors and always trying to make the life of her fellow prisoners better. She cared very deeply about her cause and even more about others who were mistreated. As her friends were taken away and killed, Partnoy remained determined to keep their memory alive by wring this book and including a written case about others who vanished to ensure they are remembered. Her story is very personal and she allows a reader into her most difficult moments for which I am very grateful. This book was a required reading for a woman's studies class and I am grateful that I had an opportunity to read it.

Little School

This was definitely an interesting and easy to read story. The Little School is Alicia Partnoy's account of what she experienced, through a blindfold, when she was forced into one of the many government concentration camps in Argentina during the Dirty War. She writes about her personal experience, thoughts and the stories of some of her fellow political dissidents. Overall it was a good read and shed to light an event I knew little to nothing about. It wasn't too intense so the average reader should be able to get through it without nightmares. It is clear that she undoubtedly left out the gory details. The book went into little detail about anybody's dark feelings, torture sessions and practically nothing about the sexual assault they must have endured. Maybe this was to save the reader, maybe she felt like it would have given the torturers some sick glorification, or maybe she just wanted us to get to know the prisoners as people not just torture victims. In any case, it was definitely a personal yet light hearted way to gain some understanding of an important event in history that can always repeat itself.

The Little School

The Little School was definitely a tale of survival. Partnoy in a way illustrates this novel more than writes it because she describes things with so much detail and really paints a picture in your head. Her stories are fascinating in both heart breaking and inspiring. The other survivors who went through this experience with her are described as very special people who she cared deeply about, even at times more than herself. The book is only about 130 pages with each chapter being extremely short so it only takes a couple hours to actually read the entire book and its an easy read at that. I enjoyed this book and think it should be considered as one of the better tales of survival amongst the many out there.

2.5 stars for her Alpha Wolf

I don’t often read paranormal stories and this is my first with werewolves/shifters! Sometimes you have to try something new. The author mentions that the paranormal element is very light and that is true! Apart from mind reading ghost Bailey who shows a few times and 2 transformations to/from werewolves in the beginning … that’s it!

This book has a lot happening in 123 pages and it feels unfinished. We get a glimpse of Gwen’s wolf trying to come to the surface but that’s it. Since the book starts with werewolves, Simon is one, Gwen becomes one and the title is “Her Alpha Wolf” I would have expected to read about her transformation too. Even though I’m glad the paranormal parts were light in this book, I missed this. It didn’t feel complete…

This is the 3rd book I read with a Daddy Dom and Little Girl and I’m open to reading this. Simon is very dominant and Gwen a very submissive women that really needs to be taken care of. Some parts were really sweet but the parts with a diaper, playpen and sippy cup were a little bit too much for me! I know that in the book description the diaper is mentioned but honestly I was a little bit clueless and thought that had something to do with the werewolf part …

What I didn’t like and you read that in a lot of books is the bare sex without talk about STDs and birth control. And then there is the second sex scene where Simon takes her other hole. If you take into consideration that she was a virgin their first time and this is only their second time and this time he already goes for her other hole with little preparation! Their ‘relationship’ is too rushed for me. But as I mentioned this book is only 123 pages…

Since I knew what I was getting into (paranormal elements and ‘diaper’) I’m taking that in consideration for my rating and give this book 2.5 stars. It was too rushed and feels unfished to me.

Oh yeah I love when I find a new to me author and luck would have it me finding Regina Shiderly. She made me laugh and I had so much fun reading Her Alpha Wolf. I wasn’t sure about it when I looked at and found myself pleasantly surprised and glad that I picked it.

The storyline a mixture of two of my fav genres and one genre that is my first time reading. I loved the characters, it was easy to picture in my mind their personalities.
Its really nothing wrong with needing a keeper, and little miss Gwen is about to see the light. She is so easy going that she loses sight on what’s important, herself. Not getting enough sleep, not eating right and not being able to say no...after a while will wear on you.

Simon is all about his word is law period, as the Alpha he protects what’s is even if they haven’t accepted it yet. (smiles) When Gwen just about falls in his lap, he’s quick to scoop her up as if she was a little doll to be taken care of. Simon sees in Gwen what she’s feeling but has brought it out to light. With patience, discipline and guidance he is sure he will be able to bring out and take care of her needs.

It was nice to watch Gwen fall into herself even still pushing the line, but accepting once she is guided to the path. Simon showed his Dom instincts from the very start his patience but firmness not only shows his strength but shows that he cares.

I want more! Yep loved it, just the right length, fun sexy and sassy. With hints of shifting and the beastly attributes. (Id have loved to seen a bit more) the bit of danger just added a layer to an already wonderful story. Oh Oh and I love his sister!! Grins. Enjoy

A lot is packed into this "little" gem

I am at a loss for words with this one. I'm still smiling and shaking my head from the whirlwind that is this "little" book. So much is packed into this novella that it's a bit schizo in a really good way. Don't believe me?

*inhaling deeply to try to get this all out in one shot*

There's werewolves, ghosts, murder, intrigue, environmental awareness, a needs-to-be-b!tch-smacked-into next-week jealous ex-girlfriend

*catching my breath here, like I'm on the twelfth day of that Christmas song*

ruffians, guns, Alpha-yumminess, a buttload of humor, spankings, age-play, AND diapers.

I think I just heard a record scratch to a halt on that last bit. heehee

Yes - this is a Daddy n little one age-play story too. A new sub-genre for me and not really my cuppa I don't think.

So why did I rate it a 5* then?

I knew what I was getting into, so why fault a well-written book just because I don't find a piece of it to be my personal kink? The age-play is well thought out and was actually very sweet and nice. It didn't get me squishy in my panties, but I did appreciate the emotional aspects that were explained in a thought-provoking manner.

The story was very creative - I mean, it kinda would have to be to include all of that and still be cohesive and fun to read, right?! I'll be checking out other books by this author, just might bypass the age-play ones for now ;)

Written in the early '70s, Golf My Way is the first of the truly modern instructionals mixing physics and kinesiology with theory and technique. The writing's a little dense, but the illustrations are quite good, and some of the mental exercises nothing less than revolutionary. If there's a caveat to Golf My Way, it's that Jack's way works for Jack's game, and may not mesh with yours. Then again, this is the book that introduced Ernie Els to golf, and look what he's done.

About the Author
Jack Nicklaus was born in 1940 in Columbus, Ohio, and maintains a home there and in Florida. Widely regarded as the greatest golfer of all time, he has achieved a record twenty major championship victories, consisting of two U.S. Amateurs, six Masters (also a record), four U.S. Opens, three British Opens, and five PGA Championships. The winner of more than 100 professional tournaments around the world, Nicklaus was named Golfer of the Century in 1988.

Ken Bowden was the editorial director of both Europe's and America's premier golf magazines, and has collaborated with Nicklaus on eleven books. Since first watching Nicklaus compete in 1959, Bowden has witnessed a great many of Jack's achievements first-hand.

And his book is an excellent read for anyone who plays the game. Jack shares an awful lot of what made him the greatest golfer of his time (and I'm still not convinced of all time). Having owned the original, the revised version is even better. This book is a must for any golfer's library.

Poor writing hinder and otherwise okay book!

Not at all what I was expecting when I bought it. As other reviews have mentioned, it presents the material in a very unorganized and hard to follow manner. It is most certainly not for beginners and only someone who had previous experience would likely be able to understand what the author is trying to convey. There's some useful info in it but overall it's very hard to follow the author's writing structure.
