The authors also give credit where credit is due, specifically to the women who were so critical to the success of the project. The first six professional programmers were all women. Well writing historical text

I just finished eating lunch with Thomas Haigh and enjoyed reading ENIAC in Action. The text is a materialist approach to understanding the development, use, and the legacy of ENIAC, one of the first programmable machines. Because the historical text primarily focuses on ENIAC as the central figure as opposed to a few individuals, the book presents an array of different contributors to the ENIAC and the development of early computing. This provides a more full context of how technology often develops through the collective efforts of disparate groups. The text often makes special mention of groups of people who are not recorded in the historical record but contributed in the development of early computing such as the "wiremen" who were primarily women who connected the wiring of ENIAC at Moore School at U Penn. The detailed descriptions of the material components of ENIAC highlight that this early computer was a machine and provide context for computing terms such as "loop" which seem disconnected to current computing. The text successfully synthesizes various competing narratives about the development of ENIAC and provides the historical backdrop of patent litigation to explain the incentives for these inconsistencies. The book is a well drafted historical work with provides perspicacious insights into the early development of computing.

In this technically rigorous exploration of ENIAC’s role as the earliest stored program computer, the authors also trace the changing conception of ENIAC’s role among historians and the general public since its completion in 1945.

If you’ve ever wondered how ENIAC worked, this is the book for you. But it is much more than a technical description. Taking the reader on a fascinating historical detective story, ENIAC In Action examines previously unknown or unexplored primary sources to create a highly nuanced narrative about the role of computing after WWII, how early women programmers helped ENIAC achieve its goals, and how ENIAC influenced later computers.

The real skinny on ENIAC

This is a really good book -- probably the best on ENIAC so far. It's not light reading by any stretch of the imagination, but if you really want to understand this machine's history and its extremely unusual architecture, this book seems like your best bet.

Warm, delicious and thrilling.

This is Sara Desmarais' best work yet. The characters live and breathe on the page, the pacing is perfect, and the story moves deliberately, forcefully, irresistibly from each new, delicious scene to the longed for, whimperingly anticipated conclusion.
The short precis on Amazon doesn't do the story justice. You will find wonderful descriptions of the wearing of lovely, sissy underwear, revealing dresses, shuddering femdom sex and the awakening of a reluctant, weak-willed sissy. Our hero's fiancee is firm, loving, stern, passionate, cruel and intimate. The journey she leads us through is so carefully, cleverly constructed, her boyfriend travels from squirming predicament to hesitant acceptance, to raw, thrillingly painful humiliation.
I loved it. If you like stories of loving female domination, pretty panties and lingerie, tear-inducing humiliation and heart-wrenching cuckoldry then this is the best story you have yet to read. I envy you that you have it all experience for the first time. Sara Dermarais is the best writer of this kind of fiction ever, and this is her best work ever.
I heartily endorse and recommend this book.

As a lover of this type of fiction I must say that once again Sara has hit the mark. I have bought all of her books and will continue to do so. Her latest takes the reader once more into the world of cross dressing and forced Fem. It leaves the sissy reader spellbound. Thanks Sara. Keep up the great work.

All aboard for Dana's flight of fantasy!

Quite an interesting and wild journey as we fly along with Dana Sullivan, and his reluctant transformation from unemployed male to employed female. To fly with company X, one must be a woman, so he dresses the part with a lot of help from his fiancee. (Nevermind the roadblocks that the insurance companies, unions, and lawyers would erect in real life, just enjoy the fiction that it was meant to be.) His fiancee's total domination of his situation (and him) grows stronger as time goes by, and soon he is caught in her web with no escape...which he really doesn't seem to mind as he gets more and more comfortable living as a woman full-time. We learn his inner thoughts and doubts as he experiences a lot of things for the first time (from the woman's perspective). There are some scenes/descriptions that get a little repetitive, but there are also many interesting and unexpected discoveries and revelations as his coworkers gradually warm up to him and become part of his inner circle. Although believability is stretched at various points throughout the book, the overall story is quite fascinating as his metamorphosis helps him uncover many things about himself and his fiancee. I liked a lot of things in this book. The ending is fine, but doesn't exactly have what I would call 'full' closure. I'm hoping there's more to Dana's story in the future.

The definitive edition for Reformed Liturgists

This edition of the book of common worship is sorely needed in today's church. I personally became Presbyterian because of exposure to Christ centred liturgical worship that made going to church a serious event rather than a form of recreation and keeping up with the Joneses. In this country, the influence of puritan nonconformists has tragically led to a lowering of the theology and practice of worship in many reformed churches, and for those who wish to recover some reformed catholicity, finding good resources can be challenging.

This book is a compilation of several edition of the worship book put together by a PCA pastor, and as such, it contains a comprehensive and pastorally focussed selection of various kinds of prayers and liturgies that are in conformity with a confessional denomination's standards. Having used the PCUSA's edition of the book of common worship, I can personally say that 1.) this edition avoids some of the modernist overtones that crept into that mainline edition, and 2.) it contains larger sections for certain prayers, such as offertory prayers, which are difficult to find elsewhere. The kindle edition is affordably priced, contains a table of contents at the beginning of the book with working links, and is fully text searchable which is very useful when putting together an order of worship. Even the introductions to various sections of the book, which I believe are original, are concisely written and, instead of pushing a particular agenda, attempt to give a sense of the richness of the historic worship in the Reformed tradition.

I agree with the author that, ideally, the PCA as a denomination should seek to find a liturgical identity and adopt a common set of standards, (beyond the Westminster Directory for Public Worship,) which are recommended for churches, but this is unlikely to happen any time soon. Barring that, this book is quite simply, the best resource out there for pastors, liturgists, families, or private individuals who wish to bring a greater depth and connection to history in their prayers and private devotions. I can't recommend it enough.

A must have for anyone involved in a Presbyterian Worship

I downloaded this book to my Kindle when I was asked to be the liturgist for worship last week. I need a Prayer for Illumination and was able to quickly find several. The table of contents is set up to be clickable so you can easily find the prayers you need for any church service.

Sure, it's neat to know which famous people have the same birthday you do, but wouldn't it be fascinating to know what else you have in common with these celebrities? The Secret Language of Birthdays will show you this and much more. Through "personology" (a combination of characteristics influenced by sun sign, season, and day of the year) and an analysis of several thousand character profiles, authors Gary Goldschneider and Joost Elfers have pinned down the traits most common to people born on the same day.

Rather than taking a strictly astrological approach--how the planets, sun, and stars affect a person's behavior--the authors compare the commonalties of people who share birthdays, and piece together a personality for each day of the year, effectively slicing through geographical and cultural differences, while avoiding the one-size-fits-all trap of newspaper sun-sign horoscopes. Some readers may find the authors' strict use of the Gregorian calendar limiting, but conversion to other time-keeping systems is fairly simple (the authors make note of this problem and contend that a day is a day, whether someone names it October 21 or 1 Rajab). Goldschneider and Elfers focus on a model of the year as a wheel spinning in a recurring circle of patterns, an idea that reaches back far beyond the linear calendars we use today. Take a little astrology, mix it with some tarot and some numerology, add a dash of psychology, frost with your birthday, and you've got "personology." For those who don't believe in astrology, the tarot, or numerology, this premise is certain to sound like hokum. But surprisingly, Goldschneider's assessments of personality on the basis of one's birthday seem fairly accurate--at least in this reviewer's smallish survey. The author's theory is that because all of life is cyclical, people born on the same day occupy the same point in the year's cycle and thus share characteristics. Even total nonbelievers will find this big, attractive book fun to read. Each day gets a double-page spread with a personality description, health information, and the date's relation to astrology signs and the tarot. There are also long lists of people born on each day, though here's where personology gives pause. Can March 10's Harriet Tubman and Chuck Norris really have all that much in common? Ilene Cooper

About the Author
Gary Goldschneider began his study of human personality with an interest in biographies and psychoanalytic theory. Before deciding against a career in medicine, for three years he attended Yale Medical School, where he studied psychiatry. During this time he discovered his deep and abiding interest in astrology and its symbolic relationship to personality.

Joost Elffers was born in Amsterdam. He created and produced numerous books over the past twenty years, including Play With Your Food and The 48 Laws of Power. He lives in New York.

ESPecially for people who want to know themselves and others

I really have no idea who Gary Goldschneider and Joost Elffers are, but somehow, they've managed to find out every little thng about every person I know and placed that information on the pages of this book.

Whenever people come over and want to get a quick thumbnail sketch about someone, they just find that person's birthday and turn to the corresponding page. There, in a concise but surprisingly in-depth essay, is a bit about the standards and practices of whatever birthdate you're looking at! Included are celebrities who were also born on that day throughout history and a few other interesting tid bits.

It makes for a fascinating party game, to find out just how "true" you think these comments are for you. So far, everyone I know has said they've been nailed to a tee by this book. I ask you... can everyone be wrong?

Highly recommended (for entertainment purposes only).

"Scary" seems to be a good term...

I'm not big on horoscopes, and hold a long-held belief that horoscopes are self-fulfilling once you read them. If you are looking for a "major romantic disaster" you will find one...whether or not you would normally classify it as major... but I'm digressing a tad.

I glanced through this book, looking up my birthday. AHH! Howly cow (and stronger, sensored words)! It pegged me perfectly. Even down to my chosen profession as an applied pedgagogical specialist dealing with underdeveloped, high-spirited, curious young people (I'm a teacher). Seesh.

This book, while it hasn't convinced me that astology and birthday personalities exists per se...has thoroughly convinced me that I'm being followed and closely watched by someone. Or that there is some truth in this "horoscopic" idea that has lasted for thousands of year.

READ THIS BOOK! Even us skeptics need to get something tossed into our faces once and awhile.

Too Much Fun ... Even For a Skeptic

I am too much of a skeptic to believe in astrology, but despite that I found THE SECRET LANGUAGE OF BIRTHDAYS to be a fun read that provides literally years worth of entertainment.

What intrigued me most about this dictionary-sized book is that instead of dividing mankind into 12 groups based upon astrological signs, THE SECRET LANGUAGE OF BIRTHDAYS devotes a two page spread to those born on each of the 365 days of the year and February 29th, too.

To some this may not seem interesting, but having grown up in a large family of six kids -- five of whom are Aquariuses -- I could never relate to astrology because none of my brothers and sisters has anything in common, yet we are all left to read the same paragraph in the newspaper horoscope.

There are three reasons you may want to check out the SECRET LANGUAGE OF BIRTHDYAS either for yourself or as a gift for a friend:

1. In many cases, if you look up your birthday, you will be shocked to find how accurately a complete stranger describes you. In my case, and in the case of many people I know, this book described us to a tee, including the good, the bad and the ugly;

2. When having friends over, this book can be enormously entertaining. Old, young, fat, thin, black, white, Puerto Rican, everyone loves to read about him or herself. Hearing these birthday-related personality profiles has provided hours of conversation as my friends and I debate whether we are accurately described in this book. Most people agree they are. Even funnier is looking up the birthdays of famous people. It is truly shocking what you will find here. Reading about Bill Clinton's and Monica Lewinsky's birthdays will amaze you because in both cases the profiles were written before the scandal; and finally

3. When giving a birthday present to someone, I like to Xerox his or her two page spread and make it into a card. I have found that often they like it more than the gift itself.

James H. Cone is Charles A. Briggs Distinguished Professor of Systematic Theology at Union Theological Seminary in New York. His other books include A Black Theology of Liberation, God of the Oppressed, The Spirituals and the Blues, and The Cross and the Lynching Tree.

the gospel being presented actually as good news

Cone's first two books, 'Black Theology and Black Power' (1969) and 'A Black Theology of Liberation' (1970), outline the philosophical necessity and practical framework of the Black Theology's doctrine. In his third strictly theological work, 'God of the Oppressed', he constructs a systematic theology using African-American religion and tradition as its basis; in it, his aim is two-fold: to respond to the dismissal of Black Theology by white theologians, and to explain the rationale of viewing God as the Liberator despite the centuries of oppression in the US. His thesis is that one's social and historical contexts determine the questions and answers that one can ask and receive from God. To illustrate this social conditioning, he contrasts the way white and black theologies have typically imagined God.

Here is a very very brief summary of the book:
Cone's first agenda is to address the problem of universality and particularity in Christian theology. He begins by stressing that theology is always contextual and intrinsically related to human experience, and argues that Christian theology must always prophetically address the socio-political conditions and involve liberating marginalized persons. Cone next addresses the question: "Who is Jesus Christ for us today?" His answer involves seeing one's social context and the Bible as dialectically related: Jesus IS Black because he WAS Jewish: Christ enters into our world amongst the poor and despised. The cross displayed God's willingness to suffer with humanity; the resurrection proclaims the liberation on display in Israel's history is now available to all. Cone concludes his work by firmly planting theology within history, arguing that salvation IS liberation, and that ethics must be founded upon it. His work teaches Christians to approach the Bible through the experience of the cross and not the other way around. He concludes that reconciliation precedes liberation, and it is as big of a risk as Jesus' cross: reconciliation is not blacks assuring white liberals that there are no hard feelings; it is God's presence insisting upon the death of the oppressor through tangible reparations.

God of the Oppressed is a forceful treatise that develops a theological system by interweaving the redemptive history of Israel, Jesus' gospel of freedom, and the concrete experience of black oppression. Cone has laid the groundwork for re-interpreting classical theological concepts: the Christian God is understood only as the God of the Oppressed. This book challenges one's assumptions regarding how the salvific message of the gospel actually occurs; it also addresses the historical nature of the Christian message: salvation should never be regarded primarily as abstract since the effects of sin are concrete; if God's intention is to free us from sin, then the truth of God's revelation must be understood as historically imbedded. The message of God of the Oppressed is clear: God has opened a new future for the humiliated and abused. Cone is a rare type of theologian: he preaches the gospel as if it were good news.

Book fabulous- Kindle edition horrible

Cone is fabulous. A must-read. But get the paper version. This kindle edition has poor spelling, leaves out words, varies in font size, and even changes some words. It even put "can" instead of "can't" and messed with punctuation. This book is a classic. At least copy-edit it before you send it live.

good intro to relativism

If you want a better understanding of relativism, its many pitfalls and dangers, but you're not looking to become a scholar on the subject, this is a good place to start.

The average person might have a sense that's something's up, there's increasing attacks on Christian values even in historically Christian places, but they can't quite put a finger on what has changed to allow this to happen.

This little book helps readers to apply a label to this insidious philosophy which has led to increasing hostility toward Christianity. It helps readers to understand how it got a foothold in society. After reading this you'll better recognize this dangerous philosophy when it rears its ugly head.

The best book on relativism I've ever read!

This dynamite little book gives the clearest, most thorough, and most succinct explanation of relativism I have ever read. Chris Stefanick covers all the bases, and does so in a way that captivates the reader and keeps his/her interest in a way that makes it difficult to put the book down. I believe this book is extremely important for our time and that it will be a great help in understanding and doing something about one of the biggest problems in our culture today. I highly recommend it to all.

Buy this for your friends and family members who think their tolerance and relativism make them deeper, better, more moral, more understanding, more "spiritual" people than you, the Christian that sticks to his/her guns in the face of the subtle and not-so-subtle forms of modern Christian persecution relativism ironically promotes. Stefanick does a great job discussing how backwards, pointless, self-contradictory, morally dubious, and downright dangerous relativism really is. If you read this book and still think relativism is the way to go, read Huxley's prophetic novel, Brave New World for a preview of what's in store for your kids and grandkids in a world in which beauty and truth have been eradicated. For those of you who thought Stefanick was right-on and want more, check out G.K Chesterton, C.S.Lewis, Stratford Caldecott, and Josef Pieper.

Mental illness is more common than you can imagine. I read this book because I want to know how to help a friend who is suffering from mental illness. She often refuses to take her medicine. This book helped me understand her better and gave me some great tools to help her. I use the tips from this book to explain to her how important is medication management for her well-being.

IM Dvoretsky was known as the Soviet Union's top trainer, and this very personal and honest work presents much of his rigorous thinking on chess tactics. This book does not believe in simple divisions and guidelines; there is much to read about subjects like creating confusion to make it difficult for an opponent to press an advantage, the blurred line between theatrics and soundness, etc.
