An excellent adaptation of the classic book
By Reader from California
The author has done a terrific job adapting the book to this format, which requires some abridging and editing. Almost all of the important details of the story are left intact and almost all of the text in the book is taken straight from the original (rather than re-written and overly edited). The illustrations are phenomenal and as a fan of the original I loved having this version to introduce the story to my very young child. A FAR superior re-telling of this story than the film version which barely resembles the original book.

Beautifully written and illustrated book
By pateacher
I think this book is a must-have for any collector of children's story books. The first impression of some at my granddaughter's 5th birthday party was that it was much too wordy for her at this age. After her party, she asked me to read it to her, and I expected her to be quickly bored or easily drawn away. But the text draws the listener right in to the story and it differs from the movie version somewhat, but is still recognizable as the story unfolds. She listened for at least 15 minutes before deciding "we'll stop right here" until the next read. It is unique and makes a wonderful, treasured gift for a child or any Wizard of Oz fan. I'd consider it of "collectible" quality. It arrived sooner than expected, which was one of the best parts.

GREAT book!
By Zaneta D. Padilla
I love the story of the Wizard of Oz, and want to introduce my daughter to this. The illustrations in this book are just beautiful. Those and the story keep my 4 year old interested in the story the whole time. it's a long story so it takes several nights to read, but she's interested every single session.

A bright soul in a dark time
By Ronald McClain
I have finally, at the age of 33, gotten around to reading Anne Frank's diary. There is little point in adding another glowing review. Everything has been said. But after reading some of the negative reviews, I feel compelled to respond. It seems there are two primary criticisms (Three if you count the ridiculous idea that the diary is a forgery, which I won't dignify). The first is that Anne doesn't talk a lot about the war or the holocaust. To this, I can only say, that's all for the better. She was a thirteen year girl living in total isolation from the rest of the world. She really had no special expertise or light to shed on these subjects. There are many excellent history books on both of these subjects. The second criticism is simply that the book is boring. She talks too much about her day to day life, her thoughts, her feelings, and so on. To this I can only say, what part of "Diary of a Young Girl" is ambiguous? The annex was her entire world. What do you expect her to write about?

What a few don't seem to understand is that this is not a "book about World War II", or even about the holocaust. If that is what she had written about, the diary wouldn't even be a footnote in history. This is the story of one young girl, in her own voice, trying to figure out what it means to live, to grow, and to be human in the most depraved and inhumane circumstances. She wrote about her hopes, her dreams, her fears, and occasionally about peeling potatoes. But the thing that some people don't see is that even when writing about the most mundane topics, she was actually writing about people, about how they endure and falter, about how they come together and how they fall apart. And despite the enormous injustice she endured, she always made the case for optimism, for hope in humanity, and for love of life. I don't know that I can agree with her, having adopted a more cynical outlook, but that just increases my admiration for her and my shame in myself for not living the gift of live to the fullest.

The other thing that stands out is the maturity of the writing. After reading just the first entry, I was blown away by the eloquence and clarity of Anne's writing. I could hardly believe that I was reading the prose of a 13 year old girl. She does write a lot about the trials and tribulations of being a teenage girl, but the voice of the writing does not feel childish at all, except perhaps in its optimism. The world lost a great talent and a brilliant soul to those murderous barbarians.

This is a difficult book to digest, and two days after finishing, I'm still haunted by it. Anne's optimism, faith, and courage inspired me throughout, but made the knowledge of what would come at the end all the more a bitter pill to swallow. All that we can do is to honor her by making sure her story and the story of millions of holocaust victims are never forgotten and never happen again. So far, we're not doing so well with that.

And there, I've done it. I've written a review. I didn't intend to, but I did. So go out and read it, if you haven't.

This is a large book. Not a pocket book.
By Jeff W. Shimkus
The revised critical edidion was released from the Netherlands Institute for War and is the most comprehensive study of the diary. The first 195 pages, before the Diaries of Anne Frank (which is three editions of the diary. Her original journal, her manuscript as she edited it, and the popular story with her father's revisions)is a complete history of Anne Frank, starting with the pictures of young Anne and family. Then the horrifying arrest. Miep reported the final moments with the Franks. After "betrayal" the book tackles the question of how they were finally discovered after so long in hidding in the annex. So close to German defeat. Then the sadening story of "imprisonment and deportation". Included in this edition are the Tales "From the Secret Annex and Cady's Life." I found the work impressive, The extents to prove the legitemacy of the pages, the story and pictures, that completed the picture started by Anne from her diaries.

Essential Reading for Humans
By GB
No real need for this review, but was prompted by Amazon, so what the heck. This is an important book. Not great literature, maybe, but a document that provides insight into a time and place, as well as a very bright, self-aware young woman with an amazingly optimistic outlook, given her circumstances. She grows more thoughtful and introspective over time--the girl writing the later entries has changed quite a bit from who she was when she began, which is interesting. Her crush on Peter (who is living yards away, just over her head) gets a little repetitive, but it's totally understandable that this was where her thoughts went. Essential reading for human beings, no matter who they are or where they are from. At the end, there are some photographs. The one that struck me the most was of a young Otto Frank, the only one of the eight who were in hiding to survive, shown in his German Army uniform from WWI.

Fundamentals of Hydro- and Aeromechanics (Dover Books on Aeronautical Engineering), by Ludwig Prandtl, O. G. Tietjens, Engineering

This well-known standard work is an expansion by O. G. Tietjens of a famous series of lectures delivered by Professor Prandtl at the Kaiser Wilhelm Institute for Flow Research. Based on Prandtl's own work, it combines a considerable amount of original material with unique insights and presentations. Wherever possible, the hydrodynamic theory presented is tied to practical experience, while experimental results are in turn related back to the underlying theory and the fundamental physical laws.
Partial contents: the statics of liquids and gases (equilibrium and stability, application of the pressure equation, static-lift on gas-filled aircraft, surface tension); kinematics of liquids and gases (geometry of the vector field, acceleration of a fluid particle, equation of continuity); the dynamics of non-viscous fluids (the Eulerian equation, potential motion, two-dimensional potential motion, vortex motion, the influence of compressibility, the equation of Navier-Stokes for viscous fluids).
While the presentation is fundamentally physical rather than mathematical, when proofs are given they are rigorous and vector analysis is employed. But the text is remarkably clear and understandable, ideally suited for both research workers and graduate-level students.

Historical masterpiece
By A Customer
This book is a fluid-dynamics masterpiece. Maybe it's a little bit outdated now, but it's the book two or three generations of fuid scientists (30s-50s) used during their studies. Definitely a must-have for the serious theoretical fluid dynamicist, not the right book if you're looking for computational methods.

An old classic
By A Customer
Ludwig Prandtl's lectures at Gottingen form the basis for this, the basic building block of classical aerodynamics. Expect to learn about the basic assumptions inherent to the use of linear theory to aerodynamic problems. Be prepared for the use of conformal mapping and functions of complex variables. Best read in combination with the companion volume on Applied Aero- and Hydro-mechanics.

Good for students with science/engineering background
By Dean Patrick
If you're looking at this book, you probably already have an interest in physics and engineering. If you don't, ask your guidance counselor how to switch majors. I kid, I kid.

This is a great book for someone new to the study of fluid dynamics, but who has an understanding of general physics and calculus. I haven't taken math since high school, so I was a little rusty on dealing with some of the equations, but anyone who has a comfortable working knowledge of derivatives and integrals should not find the math to be too great an obstacle. The book is good about connecting equations to principles, starting immediately in with statics at a level simple enough that the reader can follow without previous knowledge of this subject, yet not so simple that it spends half the book as a "history of" or basic physics primer. If you understand the concepts of force, mass, velocity and acceleration, and some basic geometry, you should be able to follow it with no problem. The book uses mathematical constructs to explain relationships, but not in the way some authors have of making the whole thing seem much more complicated than it is.

I'm using this as a self-teaching aid, because it's interesting to me and I'm kind of weird like that. Most of my physics knowledge is also self-taught, and I haven't had any classes in engineering, so if you already have several years of education in this area, I imagine you would find it slow-paced. For everyone else, it's a good resource.

Women and Men in Communal Prayer: Halakhic Perspectives, by Rabbi Professor Daniel Sperber, Rabbi Mendel Shapiro, Professor Eliav Shochetm

Communal prayer has always been a central component in Jewish life. Traditional orthodox services are structured around spatial and functional separation of men and women. In this book, introduced by Dr. Tamar Ross, Rabbi Daniel Sperber presents a halakhic justification for expanding the role of women in communal prayer services. Building on work by Rabbi Mendel Shapiro (included in the volume) in which the legal sources are examined and interpreted to permit women to lead parts of the service and participate in Torah reading, Rabbi Sperber highlights the pivotal importance of kevod ha-beri ot (human dignity) in encouraging fuller participation of women in communal prayer. Because of the relevance and timeliness of the topic, two articles that express opposition to Rabbi Sperber s position are included one by Rabbi Shlomo Riskin and one by Professor Eliav Shochetman. This anthology represents an example of a vibrant dialogue between leading scholars on a current issue and highlights the dynamic nature of the halakhic process.

Review
The proper role of women in the synagogue is an issue that Modern Orthodoxy has been struggling with for over forty years. While everyone agrees that halakhah has to guide all changes in synagogue practice, women s changing self-perception and religious sentiment must be central to any discussion of synagogue life. ...In this provocative book, Rabbi Prof. Daniel Sperber, using his characteristic erudition, makes the case that in the 21st century it is time for women to be given their halakhic right and be permitted to read from the Torah. Together with the responses of Rabbi Shlomo Riskin and Prof. Eliav Shochetman, this book is Torah study on the highest level.... --Marc B. Shapiro, Weinberg Chair in Judaic Studies, University of Scranton, Scranton, PA

Let those who believe that the question of whether or not women may chant and be called up to the Torah in public is both narrow and obscure, and has long been settled by Jewish law read this eye-opening book by thoughtful contemporary Orthodox scholars and rabbis. They will soon discover that the question is not at all narrow and far from settled. In fact, it serves as key to discovering how Jewish law and changing social and cultural norms interact in important ways, while it shows us that examining women s relationship to the Torah scroll opens the door to a wealth of ideas about their role in today s Jewish life and the changing nature of congregational prayer. --Samuel C. Heilman, Distinguished Professor of Sociology, Harold Proshansky Chair in Jewish Studies, Queens College, City University of New York

The rise today of women to fuller, more equal participation in Jewish religious life is of historic significance and is, indeed, the eschatological dream of Judaism. Thankfully, it is being achieved by evolutionary means. Yet, every evolutionary path has its transformative moments and watershed experiences along the way, and this book is one of them. With his learning, his courage, his total grounding in the sea and language of halakhah, Rabbi Daniel Sperber connects the enterprise of partnership minyanim almost seamlessly to the tradition. Sperber presumes women s intelligence, their faithfulness, their spiritual longing. In doing so, he honors the struggle of Orthodox women as one that enhances community a machloket le shem shamayim. But there s more here. From the extraordinary and elegant opening by Tamar Ross, to the creative foundation document by Mendel Shapiro founding father and ideologue of the partnership minyanim, to the cogent and thoughtful dissenting views of Rabbis Shochetman and Riskin, every word in this treasured volume has value and meaning. Would that all halakhic and communal issues that arise in our time be engaged in so profound an analysis and so civil a discourse! --Blu Greenberg, author and founding president of JOFA, New York, NY

FROM A REVIEW BY RABBI ISRAEL DRAZIN FROM THE JEWISH EYE

Halakhic concerns

What are the halakhic concerns that bother the rabbis and scholars? Unfortunately, this volume makes it clear that there is no agreement either on what is significant or what the apparently significant concern means, and this is one of the many problems frustrating a solution. For example: The code of Jewish law, Shulchan Arukh, Orach Chayim 282:3, states that "congregational dignity," kevod ha-tsibur, is affected by women being called to the Torah, reading the passages, and making a Hebrew blessing. The book shows that the reason for this exclusion is far from being clear. Did the concern develop, as many rabbis maintain, because there was a period in Jewish history when most Jewish men could not read Hebrew and when they saw women being able to do so they were embarrassed? Is this ancient notion still relevant? Men can now read the blessing in Hebrew or in transliteration. Rabbi Shapiro and Rabbi Professor Sperber argue that this is really the only tenable halakhic objection to women's aliyot, and there are reasons, as we will discuss below, why this halakhah should be overrun and women's aliyot should be allowed for all the Torah readings.

A second reason that some rabbis and scholars see restricting female participation in aliyot is the talmudic ban against hearing a woman's voice, called qol ishah. Shapiro and Sperber point out that Orthodox men hear women making blessings frequently, sometimes daily, without this qol ishah concern.

A third rationale for exclusion of women from aliyot is a principle in Mishnah Rosh Hashanah 3:8 that a person who is exempt from a mitzvah, meaning a woman, a child, or a non-Jew, cannot fulfill the mitzvah on behalf of a Jew who has the obligation.
Is the Torah the "defining Jewish experience and as such it is the spiritual property of all Jews: men, women, and children" as Rabbi Shapiro contends? Also, as he states, if women cannot discharge a man's obligation to hear the reading of the Torah, why doesn't Jewish law say this? By saying that females should not be given aliyot because of "congregational dignity," the rabbis clearly imply that if this hurdle is overcome, women may have aliyot and they will discharge the entire congregation's obligation. Rabbi Professor Sperber offers his view why and how the "congregational dignity" rule can be overcome.

The view of Professor Sperber

Professor Sperber argues, and presents a host of examples to support his view, that the concept of "congregational dignity" depends upon the concerns of a particular congregation at a particular time. If the congregation is not affronted by women having aliyot, another principle, kevod ha-beri'ot, "human dignity," overturns it. The concept of "human dignity" recognizes the humanity and dignity of women. In saying this, Sperber is not suggesting that Jewish traditions do not apply. He is arguing that the concept of "human dignity" is also part of halakhah and trumps the concept of "congregational dignity" in this case.

Followers of Shapiro and Sperber

Dr. Ross comments that a growing number of Orthodox congregations in the United States, Israel, and Australia have accepted the views of Rabbi Shapiro and Rabbi Professor Sperber and have established Orthodox egalitarian-style prayer groups where women are given aliyot and function as shelichot tsibur, prayer leaders, leading those parts of the synagogue service that do not halakhically require ten adult males, such as the repetition of the amidah, and which halakhah is understood to mandate that these portions be led by men. These groups, writes Dr. Ross, feel that they are taking the first step to address and solve the issue of female aliyot. --Dr. Israel Drazin, The Jewish Eye.com

A brilliant presentation of a difficult and controversial subject
By Israel Drazin
Women are excluded from being called to the reading of the Torah, called aliyot, in Orthodox Jewish synagogues. Women and Men in Communal Prayer addresses this issue. The book offers the opinions of four prominent, well-respected, and articulate men, three rabbis and a professor. Two, Rabbi Professor Daniel Sperber and Rabbi Mendel Shapiro, advocate changing the current practice and allowing women to participate more than they do at present. Two, Professor Eliav Shochetman and Rabbi Dr. Shlomo Riskin, oppose the change. All four approach the issue, as the book's subtitle indicates, from "halakhic perspectives," meaning that the authors offer their opinions based on the precedents of past rabbinic rulings.

The origin of the requirement to read the Torah
According to tradition, the practice of public Torah reading evolved in several stages. The Babylonian Talmud, Bava Qama 82b, reads Exodus 15:22 that states that the Israelites went three days in the desert without finding water as suggesting that Moses instituted the practice that Jews should not go more than three days without hearing the Torah, which is compared to water. Moses specified that at least three verses of the Torah must be read publically on Mondays, Thursdays, and Saturdays. The rabbis consider this a mitzvah, a Torah requirement for public Torah reading.

Maimonides states in Mishneh Torah, Hilkhot Tefillah 12:1, that generations later Ezra expanded the rule. Ezra required, among other things, that Jews read at least ten verses and that no less than seven Jews be called to the Torah on Shabbat. Still later, Mishnah Megillah 4:1 mandated that blessings be said before and after the Torah reading. There is no indication that either Moses or Ezra addressed the issue of women's aliyot.

Focusing on this history, this book states that some but not all rabbis and scholars feel that the discussion about women and aliyot should focus only on the reading of the first three verses, only the Moses mandate, the mitzvah requiring the reading of three verses; women should not be excluded from aliyot after the first three verses are finished. However, the book also states that there are other rabbis and scholars who concentrate on Ezra's mandate, such as Rabbi Riskin, who opened the world of Torah learning to Jewish women but resists a wholesale allowance of women's aliyot, "that from a purely halakhic perspective, there may be room for a woman to be called up to the Torah for the reading of the maftir and the haftarah as well as for hosafot (additions) to the seven obligatory Torah readings as long as there is a proper mechitsah in the synagogue."

Halakhic concerns
What are the halakhic concerns that bother the rabbis and scholars? Unfortunately, this volume makes it clear that there is no agreement either on what is significant or what the apparently significant concern means, and this is one of the many problems frustrating a solution. For example:

The code of Jewish law, Shulchan Arukh, Orach Chayim 282:3, states that "congregational dignity," kevod ha-tsibur, is affected by women being called to the Torah, reading the passages, and making a Hebrew blessing. The book shows that the reason for this exclusion is far from being clear. A second reason that some rabbis and scholars see restricting female participation in aliyot is the talmudic ban against hearing a woman's voice, called qol ishah. The third generation Babylonian sage Samuel said, "To listen to a woman's voice is indecent" (Babylonian Talmud, Kiddushin 70a). But the volume discusses whether this rule is relevant? When does it apply? Why should the rule be enforced when a woman makes a blessing over the Torah reading? Don't we greet and talk to women as we come to the synagogue? Shapiro and Sperber point out that Orthodox men hear women making blessings frequently, sometimes daily, without this qol ishah concern.

A third rationale for exclusion of women from aliyot is a principle in Mishnah Rosh Hashanah 3:8 that a person who is exempt from a mitzvah, meaning a woman, a child, or a non-Jew, cannot fulfill the mitzvah on behalf of a Jew who has the obligation. But does this rule apply to the Torah reading? Arguably, as Rabbi Shapiro contends, it is only in the case of personal mitzvot that the halakhah requires that one who performs on behalf of others be himself obligated on the same level, but not a community obligation such as Torah readings.

A fourth idea that is discussed is the tradition that Moses instituted the practice for three specific days. Since the command is time-bound, specified for certain days only, and since Mishnah Qiddushin 1:7 states that women are exempt from time-bound commands, the mitzvah only applies to men. While this time-bound rationale seems relevant, isn't it true, Shapiro and Sperber contend, that the actual study of Torah is not time-bound and Jews are encouraged to study Torah day and night?

There are also other concerns that are argued to exclude women from aliyot, such as "Torah reading is imbued with holiness," advanced by Rabbi Dr. Riskin, and like the priestly blessing, the repetition of the amidah, and some other services, it requires a quorum of ten males, not females. Additionally, Professor Shochetman suggests that the exclusion of females from aliyot is part of the decree to keep men and women separated during the prayer service to prevent transgression and promiscuity and enhance modesty. But do these fears require the discrimination of women? Are Shapiro and Sperber correct that there is only the one real concern "congregational dignity," which should be overridden by a greater concern?

As stated previously, there are many issues and concerns and interpretations involved with the issue of women's aliyot. No review can summaries them all. Dr. Tamar Ross devotes twenty-five pages in her excellent introduction explaining the "wealth of intellectual, institutional, and social challenges that followers of developments in the halakhic status of women may anticipate during the twenty-first century. The issue of women's aliyot is merely one example of the way in which these challenges will be met by Modern Orthodox Jews."

Nevertheless Professor Sperber argues, and presents a host of examples to support his view, that the concept of "congregational dignity" depends upon the concerns of a particular congregation at a particular time.

A solidly recommended pick
By Midwest Book Review
Communal prayer is a tradition that is very important to Judaic societies. "Women and Men in Communal Prayer: Halakhic Perspectives" analyzes communal prayer in traditional orthodox Judaism and its relation to Gender issues in these societies. Traditionally communal prayer is separated by gender, and Rabbi Daniel Sperber and other thinkers provide an analysis and discussion of these principles. A vital read for those concerned with Jewish social issues, or as an outsider seeking insight on Orthodox culture, "Women and Men in Communal Prayer is a solidly recommended pick that shouldn't be missed.

Gothicka: Vampire Heroes, Human Gods, and the New Supernatural, by Victoria Nelson

The Gothic, Romanticism's gritty older sibling, has flourished in myriad permutations since the eighteenth century. In Gothicka, Victoria Nelson identifies the revolutionary turn it has taken in the twenty-first. Today's Gothic has fashioned its monsters into heroes and its devils into angels. It is actively reviving supernaturalism in popular culture, not as an evil dimension divorced from ordinary human existence but as part of our daily lives.

To explain this millennial shift away from the traditionally dark Protestant post-Enlightenment Gothic, Nelson studies the complex arena of contemporary Gothic subgenres that take the form of novels, films, and graphic novels. She considers the work of Dan Brown and Stephenie Meyer, graphic novelists Mike Mignola and Garth Ennis, Christian writer William P. Young (author of The Shack), and filmmaker Guillermo del Toro. She considers twentieth-century Gothic masters H. P. Lovecraft, Anne Rice, and Stephen King in light of both their immediate ancestors in the eighteenth century and the original Gothic-the late medieval period from which Horace Walpole and his successors drew their inspiration.

Fictions such as the Twilight and Left Behind series do more than follow the conventions of the classic Gothic novel. They are radically reviving and reinventing the transcendental worldview that informed the West's premodern era. As Jesus becomes mortal in The Da Vinci Code and the child Ofelia becomes a goddess in Pan's Labyrinth, Nelson argues that this unprecedented mainstreaming of a spiritually driven supernaturalism is a harbinger of what a post-Christian religion in America might look like.

Review
There are other books in the field of religion and popular culture, but none really do what Nelson does, that is, point out that strictly secular, Marxist, materialist, or psychological readings will no longer do. This is the real genius or daemon of this book. Nelson's voice is without peer in this domain--she is carving out a most unique and most brave stance. (Jeffrey J. Kripal, Rice University)

This is an admirable, strong, and original book, a worthy sequel to The Secret Life of Puppets. Nelson's prose is clear and restrained, very winning and illuminating of the dark corners in 21st-century America and beyond in a stricken world. I can think of no rival works this substantial. (Harold Bloom, Yale University)

Where else can Vijay Mishra's The Gothic Sublime trade shadows with Stephenie Meyer's vampires and Guillermo del Toro's grotesqueries except in the mysterium tremendum of Nelson's astounding Gothicka? A book of delirious erudition that establishes the Gothic at the heart of our civilization and then proceeds to trace in our vampires, our saviors, our zombies, our medieval conspiracies, our superheroes, and our monsters how the contemporary Gothic is shedding the dark supernaturalism of its origins, a brightening that not only reveals our present obsessions but also seems to portend the dawning of a new kind of post-Christian spirituality. Provocative, forward-looking and masterful. (Junot Daz, author of The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao)

Gothicka is a spirited and illuminating successor to Nelson's highly original previous study, The Secret Life of Puppets. It picks up on many of the lines of thought in Puppets and applies them to opening up some of the most successful books and films of the last three decades, works which, while being read by millions, have not received much critical or scholarly attention. Nelson is preeminent in her knowledge of this field where the study of contemporary religion fuses with mass media and bestseller culture, and Gothicka is a terrific, original, eye-opening, and entertaining work. (Marina Warner, author of Stranger Magic: Charmed States and the Arabian Nights)

This highbrow yet accessible analysis of a genre dedicated to "outrageousness" and "lowbrow ways" will appeal to history, literature, and pop culture buffs in addition to studious devotees of the domain. (Jillian Mandelkern Library Journal 2012-04-15)

A fun, well-written and original read that offers flashes of insight. (Deborah D. Rogers Times Higher Education 2012-04-19)

[A] spirited examination of the role of pulp Gothic fiction in contemporary culture...Nelson's overview of the origins of the Gothic genre and its later ramification into sub-genres such as the ghost story, vampire tale, esoteric thriller and post-apocalyptic survival narrative is lively and sharp. She is equally at home discussing high and low art, and is at her most persuasive when tracing the literary evolution of specific motifs. (Elizabeth Lowry Wall Street Journal)

Nelson knows her turf and, unlike many academics who dine below the salt, she gives the impression of being genuinely affectionate towards her disreputable subject matter. She is sometimes thought-provoking and has clearly read more proper historians and solid thinkers than most pop-culture pundits. (Kevin Jackson Literary Review 2012-07-01)

With this brilliant encyclopedic study of gothic literature, film, and culture, Nelson continues the exploration of the gothic she began in The Secret Life of Puppets. Although (as she states) she does not try to survey, or position herself within, the area of gothic scholarship, her scholarship is solid, referencing major scholars such as Fred Botting. This is not dry, difficult reading; the book can be enjoyed by anyone interested in the gothic, including aspects of it that have not been extensively explored. Nelson focuses mainly on 21st-century examples, while providing an excellent background of earlier works and connecting them to contemporary works in unusual ways. In addition to cultural crazes such as Stephanie Meyer's Twilight series and Dan Brown's novels, she includes chapters on gothic performance art such as the Christian 'Hell House,' which she connects to the medieval European mystery plays. Including extended discussions of Guillermo del Toro's films, William Young's unusual Christian novel The Shack, and new interpretations of Lovecraft and his influence, the book provides a refreshing exploration of a subject that has in recent years tended to be overdone. (L. J. Larson Choice 2012-11-01)

In Gothicka, [Nelson] shows how contemporary films, video games, graphic novels and television series have reinvented and transformed the Catholic iconography of the late medieval period and how the Gothic has even offered 'a vehicle for developing the frameworks of new religious movements.' (Max Fincher Times Literary Supplement 2012-11-16)

Gothicka is a well-articulated, compelling argument towards a new understanding of the Gothic as a spiritual portal. (Whitney Borup Quarterly West 2012-10-01)

Vampires, zombies and the new spirituality
By HP Seaton
This book is a must read for anyone who is fascinated by the rise of 'supernatural' creatures in popular culture, and what that means for religion (or spirituality, etc.) down the road. Ms. Nelson is particularly gifted in making the 'insider only' culture that makes up a lot of sf and fantasy accessible. Her writing is strong and effortless, making reading about very convoluted ideas an enjoyable experience.

I purchased this on the strength of a lecture delivered by author on Twilight. I have not been disappointed. The richly layered research outlines a historical mythology of Gothic characterisations. There is so much to learn about the narrative developments over time and this should be a go to reference for anyone interested in popular cultural representations and their literary/cultural genealogy.

Very Comprehensive Survey of Horror/Weird Literature, Film, TV, etc.
By Terence Kuch
Unlike her brilliant Secret Life of Puppets, which is worth five+ stars, Gothika is more of a systematic item-by-item survey of horror / fantasy / vampire / zombie books, films, TV series, etc. I can't think of any 'Gothik" (as she defines it) item she hasn't read and studied - hundreds of titles she writes intelligently about, and links together in terms of themes and influences. This book will be of great value as a reference for writers and others working in this area, but may not be of great interest to the general run of those interested in these genres as consumers.
