In this deeply learned work, Toshihiko Izutsu compares the metaphysical and mystical thought-systems of Sufism and Taoism and discovers that, although historically unrelated, the two share features and patterns which prove fruitful for a transhistorical dialogue. His original and suggestive approach opens new doors in the study of comparative philosophy and mysticism.

Izutsu begins with Ibn 'Arabi, analyzing and isolating the major ontological concepts of this most challenging of Islamic thinkers. Then, in the second part of the book, Izutsu turns his attention to an analysis of parallel concepts of two great Taoist thinkers, Lao-tzu and Chuang-tzu. Only after laying bare the fundamental structure of each world view does Izutsu embark, in the final section of the book, upon a comparative analysis. Only thus, he argues, can he be sure to avoid easy and superficial comparisons. Izutsu maintains that both the Sufi and Taoist world views are based on two pivots—the Absolute Man and the Perfect Man—with a whole system of oncological thought being developed between these two pivots. Izutsu discusses similarities in these ontological systems and advances the hypothesis that certain patterns of mystical and metaphysical thought may be shared even by systems with no apparent historical connection.

This second edition of Sufism and Taoism is the first published in the United States. The original edition, published in English and in Japan, was prized by the few English-speaking scholars who knew of it as a model in the field of comparative philosophy. Making available in English much new material on both sides of its comparison, Sufism and Taoism richly fulfills Izutsu's motivating desire "to open a new vista in the domain of comparative philosophy."

A step towards meta-historical dialogue

An excellent comparative analysis of the ideas of Ibn Arabi and Lao Tzu. Izutsu very clearly and sytematically presents the underlying metaphysical concepts which serve as the substrate for IA's and LT's respective world-views. Relying on Qashani, a classical Ibn Arabi interpretor, to expound IA's otherwise elliptical and obscure theosophy, the author suceeds in simplifying IA's difficult and mind-boggling ontology which has riddled Muslim scholars for centuries. By bringing to light the profound similarites between IA's and LT's doctrines, some interesting questions are raised which probably can't be answered exclusively by historical scholarship.

LIFE-CHANGING! You do not need to read the entire book to follow the system, but I was so impressed with it that I read the entire thing. I used this in combination with the CD of white noise and had my daughter sleeping through the night the very first night I implemented it (at two months old). I could almost see the relief in her eyes as I followed this system and she was finally able to get the sleep she was desperate for. It has been four years and I STILL play the CD in her room each night. This is my go-to baby shower book and I have purchased it countless times since.

I have read the book many times and even have pages bookmarked that I revisit when I reach a new developmental stage and need advice for my baby. I like that it is not extreme (not attachment parenting but not the fever method either) so it gives balanced advice and doesn't guilt you for using one method over another. It also provides different options rather than preaching one "right" way.

So thankful for this book!

Purchased this book after seeing a video by Dr. Harvey Karp while at the Birthing Center-- his video helped turn our first day with our amazing but screaming-from-the-moment-he-was-born newborn into a time we could enjoy (and feel confident that we could help soothe our poor little guy). This book (read entirely standing while rocking a screaming child who took two hours to rock to sleep and then only slept maybe two hours at time) changed our world- after reading it and following all suggestions, our son was able to sleep for several hours at a time (which means I was able to sleep several hours at a time as well which made everything so much better!). I continued to follow his suggestions through the months and by 8 months old he was successfully sleeping in his own room in a crib, with very very minimal crying, if any when put to bed.

This Book is OK, but...

I bought this as a small part of my boyfriend's Christmas...he has an odd sense of humor and I love that about him. Anyway, some of the jokes were terribly lame and there are a lot of grammatical errors. He loved the idea of the book, but it was a little disappointing.

A simple jokebook where dead babies are the subject matter, they are constructed to shock people, a form if humour that will obviously give mixed results, but to any fans of the genre it is excellent. To any who are not fans of the genre, the message is clear: this is not the book for you, and I don't know why you would be searching for and reviewing said book. It does its job and does it well.

I haven't even bought this book yet, but will solely because of the horrified reaction from people who think they have a right to decide what is funny to other people or what other people should be allowed to buy. Additionally, I'm tired of hearing the same old jokes and a couple other reviewers said it was hilarious. I'm purchasing this for me and maybe even for some friends who have a broad sense of humor and realize a JOKE is just a JOKE. If you think this humor is offensive, don't buy it! Wow, what an easy solution.

Many words from this book have helped to heal a heart that was broken 10 years ago by a non-Catholic charismatic church. It is very well written, easy to understand, and gives step-by-step instructions for any baptized Christian looking to unleash the Holy Spirit within. A particular focus on the gift of Healing. The last chapter or so is mostly about Fransican University and is kind of boring, but everything before that was so good that I had trouble putting the book down! This book will definitely put a spark in your prayer life if you follow the suggestions. I think this would be a good book for anyone SKEPTICAL about Catholic Charismatic Renewal, as I was. I am a skeptic no more. Thank you, Father, for this book.

Should be required reading for all Catholic clergy & laity. Experiencing a Baptism in the Spirit is like God taking the scales off of your eyes, and allowing you to see the world through spiritual lenses instead of secular ones.
