Restaurant Financial Basics

I have read a few titles in regard to restauarnt management and start up to fine tune my restaurant management know how to better my odds at this cut throat industry. After going thorugh this book, it gave some really good insight, and more importantly knowing the numbers really helped provide substance for the strategy and management mantra from other reading. This is more like a textbook, so it is not for everyone, but for what the authors set out to achieve - Restaurant Finacial Basic it is pretty spot on.
To improve, I will suggest some simple but intersting case study to supplement, this will really engage the reader and tied up the teaching in the book nicely.

Jack Welch is undoubtedly one of the most talked about chief executives in America. Three months apart, two books have appeared about Welch and his mandate to restructure GE in the 1980s. Unlike Robert Slater's The New GE: How Jack Welch Revived an American Institution ( LJ 10/1/92), authors Tichy, a professor and GE consultant, and Sherman, a Fortune reporter, offer a deeper analysis of Welch's leadership practices and philosophies. The authors use the first person singular to signify an insider's (Tichy's) view, which is confusing at first. Furthermore, the addition of the "Handbook for Revolutionaries" (material developed at GE's executive education center in Crotonville, New York) makes Tichy appear to be a Welch convert, and the bias is sometimes too obvious. The repetition of ideas makes reading laborious. However, the authors do a substantial job in presenting the research, which included over 100 hours of interviews with Welch. Recommended for all business libraries.

Decent read, lessons to be learned.

This book looks dauntingly thick when you pick it up, but some brief exploration will show that including the interviews only 311 pages are the Jack Welch story-- the rest of the book is Afterword, GE Timeline, GE Shareholder Reports, Bibliography and finally a section meant to be applied to your own business. I suppose that there are readers out there who wanted that level of completeness in their history of GE. I did not. I stopped reading after the afterword.

The book covers GE during the period of Jack Welch's reign. Specifically, it charts his efforts in five major initiatives: Services, Six Sigma, Digitization, Succession, and the Honeywell acquisition.

I found it interesting and readable, although I was left with the feeling (despite the author's best efforts) that these were very difficult achievements to duplicate if you did not happen to be Jack Welch. Although ostensibly a business biography, I still had much more of a feel of personality than facts when I was done. I would have been pleased to have a less broad-ranging treatment which delved a little bit more deeply into some specific numbers and consequences. Reads like a fiction with Jack Welch as the Hero

Hero worship this book is without shame. Sure, the book calls Jack Welch an "As***le" but it is spoken as a compliment. This highly antagonistic, argumentative, determined, intelligent, and energetic hero is indeed a first class "As***le" without apologies. He is the consummate proof that one needs to be an excellent "As***le" to be considered as a great CEO\manager. If you are one of the nice guys who wants to be gentle, cheerful, and sympathetic to your 80+hr/week working employees, forget it, you can't be a successful manager at GE. You need to be like Jack, and take all the credit for the hard work your underlings, and if any of them complain, you kick their fatass during their review which you are required to cut at least 5% of your staff.

Be a tough, bottom-line demanding, reality driven, confrontation seeking, slave driving, and kick assing manager. Otherwise, you will get your butt kicked by other first class manager\as***les. This is the primary lesson of "Control your destiny or someone else will".

On the business side, I found Jack's view on competitiveness ("if you don't have competitive advantage, don't compete") and productivity (productivity is the engine that drives profitability, job security, competitiveness, and higher pay) quite refreshing.

Fantastic

Although I didn't buy this book through Amazon but in a book shop in Kathmandu I can high recommend it. I bought it for my three year old who now love the story only after three reads. Simon you capture the feeling of Nepal in your tails. The Minkey temple, cows in the middle of the road and protestors on the street. The true sights and sounds of Kathmandu. My daughter normal gets scared of frightening creatures in stories ie. the big bad wolf. But now she wants a Yetti on her bed just like Jack and Betty. We have a tigers tail as well. Please oh please keep them coming. Mike

Wonderful story!

We received this book as a present from friends who live in Nepal, and our little boy who is just turning 2 loves the book so much. He now says "Namaste" to people when he meets them, and constantly walks around singing Jack and Betty, the yak and the yeti. It's a lovely story. The artwork is not wonderful, but it has a charm to it that you can appreciate.

I saw this book in Kathmandu and wanted to buy it. My traveling companion bought the last copy. I read his copy, which he took home to his son who loved it. Couldn't get this book on amazon so ordered it from the shop in Kathmandu. Ordered 8 copies for children of friends. The books are too expensive on this site.

I recommend Dean Koontz's MR MURDER to be followed by Dean Koontz's DARK RIVERS OF THE HEART. These are a solid one-two punch! The stories build on one another. Concepts and groups are introduced in Dean Koontz's MR MURDER that Dean Koontz's DARK RIVERS OF THE HEART play out to completion. THE interesting aspect of this book as Mr Koontz describes at some point in the forward or afterward, is the fact that his protagonist's childhood mirrors his own in that he was terrified of his father for VERY good reason. (I think that this is that book...it has been a while) Anyway, you cannot go wrong. I would strongly caution that the beginning of MR MURDER seems pointless for far too long. They it explodes into action that grips you until the end.

DARK RIVERS OF THE HEART is technically a better book, but Dean Koontz's WATCHERS is the book that my heart loves. Read it too!!

Take a walk in the main characters shoes as he is compeled to find the person whom he thinks will deliver him for his dark past and give him a meaningful life. Pursued by a psychotic government agent and a equally twisted girlfriend, and a serial killer father who is in prison. This book has plenty of twists and turns to keep you wondering what will happen next.

Sherry F. Colb is Professor of Law and Charles Evans Hughes Scholar at Cornell University Law School, where she teaches courses in animal rights, evidence, and criminal procedure. She is a graduate of Columbia College and Harvard Law School, and a former law clerk to the late Supreme Court Justice Harry A. Blackmun. Colb lives in Ithaca, New York, with her husband, two daughters, and two mixed-breed dogs.

Very Thoughtful arguments.

From the title, I thought this book would be "vegan light", but it is anything but. The author is a law professor at Cornell and it shows. She has very carefully thought out all the the answers to the questions that are typically asked of vegans. I was extremely impressed by her answers and the readability of the book overall. Even for long-time vegans who know it all, there is something to be gained from Colb's perspective. I highly recommend it.

Beautiful writing & incisive analysis

“Mind if I order the cheeseburger?” is a spectacular exploration of veganism and animal rights that will entirely engross both the meat-eater who is exploring the concept of veganism for the first time, as well as the veteran vegan/animal rights supporter who has read most of the vegan literature cannon.

I especially enjoyed:

1) The writing. Colb writes beautifully. Every chapter is full of gems of rhetorical construction that are, quite simply, fun to read.

2) Colb's compassionate and detailed treatment of each question. Some of these questions drive vegans a bit nuts, and we may want to say, “you cannot be serious!,” but Colb explains (for every single question) why the question makes sense from the vantage of the one asking it. For each of the thirteen questions Colb explores (and these do represent the thirteen most important questions), she thoroughly lays out the psychology behind the question, why the question is reasonable (she puts the most positive possible spin on the philosophical rational for it), and her thoughts in response.

3) The analysis. Colb brings her brilliant legal scholar’s mind to both why the question is asked and to her response. Most chapters include incisive analogies that distill each issue to its essence, and some of them are laugh-out-loud funny (e.g., a bad Samaritan who passes by a dying person and then drops by the bookstore to purchase Atlas Shrugged).

Although all 13 chapters include the three qualities I just listed, I particularly enjoyed Colb’s treatment of: 1) abortion; 2) animals eating other animals in nature; 3) plants being alive and perhaps suffering; 4) the idea that since animals are already dead, eating meat does not lend complicity to harm; and 5) the fact that farm animals would not exist if not for the meat industry.

Although deeply philosophical and packed with detailed analysis of tough questions, the book is (as noted) an absolute pleasure to read.

If I could give more than five stars, I would.

Great read!

I have read a few books on veganism and animal rights and this is one of the best. As a law professor Sherry Colb seems very careful about making arguments on behalf of veganism that are really solid. And I think she succeeds with that. At the same time the language is clear and accessible. The book's main focus are on food choices and does not cover everything within the field of animal rights. The foreword by Masson is also great. I recommend!!
