About the Author
A K Michaels was born in Scotland quite a number of years ago! She was married at a young age and is mother to three much loved children. After the birth of her last child she went back to higher education and studied for a year before gaining employment in the banking industry. She worked in that role for a number of years before leaving, both the job and the country. She lived abroad for a few years before returning to Scotland and finally taking up her dream - writing. She is the author of the Defender's Blood series of books and two other series, The Witch, The Wolf and the Vampire and also Sabrina's Vampire, together with a Wolf Erotica Novella, Lori's Wolf. Her books fall into the Paranormal/Urban Fantasy genre and she loves writing those particular kinds of stories where she can let her imagination run wild! She now spends her time reading - everything from Sci Fi to Crime, Erotica to Fantasy, Thrillers to Paranormal Romance. She loves spending time with her family and, of course, writing! Needs so much more then a 5 star review!!

I received this book as a gift, I will give a honest review but I may let a few spoilers past in my review which is rare!

Let, see this is book 2 in the Defender's Blood, so read part 1 as you will miss sooo much if you do not. As you know Alex is now carrying babies. Twins and the town is under attack.. The scenes the changes in the people and oh my are so life like that it is amazing. My mind could see this .. the growth of the babies, Michael the angel sneaking in to get a peek at Alex. The prepping for a war. angels coming to asst in said war.

All I can say is this is a in depth look at vamps, witches, wolves and humans. It is absolutely amazing the words this author is able to put together to make me sit in my seat, miss sleep.. miss my coffee (and I do not miss my coffee) so I can finish this book! She takes you on a ride into a world you wish was real, brings it to life just for your eyes only!! So pick up the set and read it .. then re read it at a later date!! Needs so much more then a 5 star review!!

The Birth and the Battle Review

The second book in the Defender’s Blood series is an intriguing read that keeps the reader on their toes. Alex and Zach discover that not only is Alex pregnant with twins but that she’ll be giving birth sooner than they think. All does not go well and with the impending birth comes an unspeakable evil – an evil that wants just one thing. It wants the babies!

This steady paced plot keeps the reader’s on their toes with lots of suspense, action, drama and romance. The author describes the scenes with vivid imagery and details that capture the imagination and the action scenes are well orchestrated, believable and make the reader feel as if they are part of the action. The author does a great job with the timing and building the tension with lots of suspense throughout the story and the reader gets caught up in the story as the couple try to handle everything that comes with an impossible pregnancy and the upcoming battle with the demons. The characters are strong, compelling, easily related to and grab the reader’s attention from the very beginning.

The romance between Zach and Alex still burns extremely hot and the frequent sex scenes scorch the reader with a vibrant intensity that the reader can feel the couple’s passion for each other. The reader can’t help but get caught up in the drama of everything that happens to this couple as they await the birth of the twins. The story also has the romance and drama of the other couples that spice up the story and really draws the reader in making them feel as if they are part to this supernatural community and the reader goes through the emotional gambit from smiles, chuckles, tears, anger, fear and joy.

I was completely engrossed with this story from beginning to end and there was no chance of getting bored with all the intrigue and action taking place. I really like how all the characters and people from afar joined together to protect the little ones, even strangers it really captures the heart.

Alex is pregnant, even though vampires are supposedly sterile. This is a very special pregnancy, and Zack is spoiling Alex outrageously. Anything and everything she wants, she gets. Until they are warned that something is coming after her. The whole town of Unity come together to protect her. This could be all out war.
This is an exciting story, with Alex learning a lot about what being mated to a very sexy vampire means. There are some very scary scenes and we have a lot of old friends to worry about when the fighting starts. Our author has been a bit mean and left us with a cliff hanger. Good job i have the next book waiting. I still want to live in Unity.

The title is a joke!

At last I thought, a book that teaches me how to create melodies. What a disappointment. Weissman doesn't explain how to use or develop a motif. Nor does he explain how to develop a melody or to generate prosody between the melody and the lyrics. The best book on writing melodies I've read is by Jai Josefs"writing music for hit songs'. The best book that brings every aspect of songwriting together is John Braheny's "The craft and business of songwriting'. For lyric writing I'd recommend all three of Pat Pattisson's books. I'd study Braheny's book first (In his lyric section he covers all the important aspects of Sheila Davis's 'the craft of lyric writing' and 'writing succesful lyrics')plus adding a lot of other ideas. Moreover, the book helps you to develop your creativity. After studying John's book I'd move on to Pat and Jai to get more detailed information about lyric and Music writing.

Don't waste your time on this book.

As a long-time professional musician who wanted to hone his songwriting skills in order to produce songs that were more aesthetically and commercially pleasing, I recently searched through songwriting books for help and guidance. At first, this book's title seemed promising--there didn't seem to be any other books focusing on the creation of melody. I expected an in-depth study offering insight and inspiration. It turned out to be a profound disappointment. Weissman comes across as a nice, well-meaning man, so I feel hesitant to excoriate his book, but his treatment of melody is superficial and prosaic. There's nothing in this book that a moderately gifted 5-year-old couldn't figure out by banging on a piano; it's based on the most rudimentary music theory, and is quite unimaginative at that. A complete novice might find something useful in this book, but even he/she would be better served by reading other books. I strongly recommend getting a good music theory book, and checking out books by Braheny, Leikin, Citron and Sheila Davis. They have everything Weissman has and much more, and presented much more skillfully. If you're serious about your songwriting, do it right!

Quick and to-the-point for beginners

I am surprised to see this book getting only one star by a couple of reviewers - they must have been disappointed that the book is very simplistic and meant to be a to-the-point, easy-to-follow beginner's book. I thought the book was great. It quickly explained to me how music is made up of notes from chosen chord progressions and scales. I love the book because it is short and written in boldy formatted paragraphs with diagrams of piano keys and guitar frets. It's a small, slim hardcover book so it's great to take along and read over coffee. It is a very basic book but it does what few writers are able to do: say exactly what needs to be said in as short a time space as possible! I think the author did a great job. I am now searching for my second music theory book, to keep learning about how music is actually created.

Great Book!

I was so excited to get this book in the mail! The best part of this book is the spiral bound feature! I own another book by the same author/artist so I was comfortable ordering this book because I knew what to expect. I was not disappointed! I use this book as a teaching tool and it's easy for students to understand, even the ones who have never had a drawing class. It's a book worth getting. A bit on the pricey side but what fashion design book isn't especially these college books. It's a great reference and a must if you have a fashion and sewing book collection.

I love this book. I have been reading and watching every video everyday. It's very visual.
I really enjoy that is a bounded book because is easy to manipulate.
About the videos, I'm not sure that I like the way that this edition presented them because you have to create and account to watch them and they are only online access, I think for one year.

Even though I reccomend it! It's a must if you want to learn how to draw fashion figures (I didn't study fashion and I am learning on my own). Believe me, I am a fashion geek who lives in New York and this is one of my favorites

Outstanding Textbook

Bina Abling is an exceptional instructor. My dream growing up was to become a fashion designer and when that didn't happen, I yearned for that experience for many years. Now that I'm retired and have some free time, I thought maybe I can learn something about fashion design. Doing much research on Amazon, I found this book to be the epitome of all that and more. Bina is a gifted, knowledgeable, forthright teacher. She encourages your creativity and helps you through the absolute rules of fashion design. The information regarding the tools and the illustrations are phenomenal. I cannot say enough about this book; it's luxurious and rich with everything you need to know about fashion design. The illustrations and the sketches of children and men which are usually very difficult are very helpful. Bina also includes a DVD inside the front cover - this is very helpful also as you watch her illustrate. Bina also encourages the student. I would recommend this book for any Fashion Design student or anyone who wants to learn to illustrate the runway model or perhaps learn more about the fashion design world.

About the Author
THOMAS LEO OGREN has a master’s degree in agricultural science and is the creator of the Ogren Plant Allergy Scale (OPALS), a plant-allergy ranking system now used by the United States Department of Agriculture. He is a horticulturist and allergy researcher as well as a former landscape gardening instructor, nursery owner, and gardening radio show host. He lives in San Luis Obispo, California.

Very rarely do we come across an idea that is both exceptionally good and revolutionary in its scope; the book The Allergy-Fighting Garden by Thomas Leo Ogren is such an idea. I was a practicing allergist for more than fifty years. In the past I often advised people to avoid the “toxic” highly allergenic shrubs and trees, but my knowledge of botany was limited. Today, allergies are given short shrift in American medical schools. Students preparing for a medical career will receive only one or two lectures on the subject during a four-year course of intense study.

Allergies cause a huge amount of pain and suffering. There are many medical treatments for allergies, and none of them is perfect. All of them have side effects. The very best treatment for allergy is to avoid the offending substance. But when the state or city park department plants trees for shade, for example, they can end up causing intense suffering because of their poor choice of trees. Homeowners, too, unknowingly make poor choices and cause themselves years of allergy as they surround their houses with allergy-causing trees, shrubs, and lawns.
However, before this book, if you wanted to plant a landscape with allergy-free plants, you had few places to turn to for advice. Some landscapers knew that fruitless mulberries and olive trees caused allergy, but that was about it.

The Allergy-Fighting Garden is therefore a greatly needed book. Several things especially make this work so valuable. Ogren’s allergy scale, assigning all plants a simple 1 to 10 allergy ranking, is a marvelous idea. All plants are not created equal. Certain plants cause no allergy, some cause very little, and some cause a great deal of suffering. Ogren’s allergy scale addresses this problem head-on.

Another fine idea in this book is the reasoning about the dioecious species of plants. Dioecious (separate-sexed) plants cause far more than their share of allergies, because the male plants usually produce so much airborne pollen. These species, which include many common plants such as willows, ash, and maples, are often described as the worst allergy offenders. What Ogren figured out here is that the flip side is also true. If the males are the worst, then the females are the best! This is a simple idea, perhaps, but up until now no one has really addressed it.

The Allergy-Fighting Garden should be on the shelf of every serious gardener. All allergy specialists would be wise to own a copy, and certainly the book should be in the library of every nursery and municipal park department. Perhaps most important of all, this text should be required reading for every college student of landscape design or horticulture. Ogren has made a valuable contribution to our good health, and now it is up to us to put the information to work.

The importance of this book can not be over emphasized.

Tom, an eminent horticulturist, whose wife has asthma and allergies, became interested in allergy-free gardening more than 25 years ago. His research, lectures and publications have gained worldwide acclaim. As a master gardener, I am ashamed to admit I never considered allergy-free landscaping before now. Tom's book, his fourth on this subject, was an eye-opener for me. I am totally in awe of Tom's important work.

I learned from the book that in the 1950's few people had severe allergies, but today asthma is the #1 chronic disease in children in the U.S. Tom explains how we created the problem -- yes, it is man-made. Originally, landscapers used plants propagated by seed, so there were more-or-less equal numbers of male and female. New discoveries allowed growers to produce separate-sexed plants, so they could choose one or the other. As you know, my dear gardening friends, the male produces pollen, the female produces fruit. As the female plants are the messy ones, the USDA recommended only male trees should be planted in towns and cities to reduce the amount of litter on sidewalks. Therefore, less mess, but 10,000 times more pollen than when both male and female were planted. Making it worse, not only do female plants produce no pollen, they trap and remove pollen from the air. The problem was further exacerbated when the trees lost through Dutch Elm Disease were replaced with male trees.

Tom suggests you evaluate your existing plants. He does a good job of explaining perfect (bisexual) flowers, monoecious (single sexed) and dioecious (unisexual), suggesting ways you can determine the sex of a plant, giving several examples of each. An earlier book of Tom's has the attention-grabbing title, Safe Sex. It's a great title now we know the link between the sex of the plant and its power to cause or prevent allergies.

In one section of the book, Tom discusses eliminating allergy-causing mold spores with such considerations as mulches, airflow, and sunlight. He advocates IPM and avoiding insecticides and fungicides ... in my case this is 'preaching to the choir.' As well as advice on home landscaping, Tom shows how we can fight allergies in neighborhoods and cities by writing letters and sending emails. He draws attention to the concern about pollen in our school yards. In addition, he points out that the push to 'plant more trees' has no regard for the allergy problem.

The most important part of the book for me is the A - Z listing of allergy-fighting plants. Tom has developed the Ogren Plant Allergy Scale or OPALS. This is a numerical scale ranking such factors as amount of pollen produced, potency of the pollen, how long in bloom, size of pollen grains, etc. It is a 1 - 10 scale with one being the least allergenic. Each plant is ranked against other plants of the same type (obviously, a tree with a high rank will be worse than a perennial with a high rank, because of size.) The A - Z plant list is very comprehensive with cross-references, so you can find a plant when you only know the common name. Each A - Z plant description gives growing conditions and other information as well as its ranking. Finally, the book has an excellent glossary, recommended reading list, list of useful websites, a pollen calendar, and a USDA Plant Hardiness Zone Map.

Tom sent me a free iBook in return for an honest review. I purchased a hard copy from Amazon, because I need to take the book with me for reference when I go to the garden center to make my new plant purchases. Some companies have started using OPALS labels, but many have not.

I highly recommend this important book for gardeners, landscapers, and anyone concerned with allergies. It is a fascinating subject of interest to all.

The Allergy-Fighting Garden is "spot on" regarding the major sources of allergies and how to reduce their impact

Tom is “spot on” when he writes and speaks about the hazards of planting too many male trees, For example, as an allergy sufferer, I regularly regret the decision of city landscapers in San Luis Obispo, CA, where I live, to plant huge numbers of male birch trees.

He knows the allergen propensity of virtually every common plant. Fifteen years ago Tom spotted a full-grown Podocarpus gracilior, a fern pine that is one of the back bone plants of modern landscaping nearby the door of my home office. I was having to take antihistamines every time I went to work. Tom told me to get rid of the Podocarpus. I no longer needed the heavy dose of antihistamines. Since then I am a total convert to Allergy Free Gardening, the title of Tom’s first book which premiered OPALS, the rating scale for plants based on the virility of their pollen. Liz and I re-landscaped our gardens with highly beneficial results.

His understanding of the history of plants and landscaping is unsurpassed. We can learn a great deal from the planting practices of earlier peoples. Tom points out that California’s Franciscan missionaries knew not to plant the ubiquitous olive groves to near residential areas. A lot of sneezing was avoided 150 years before Kleenex and antihistamines.

A book for every allergist's office!

As both an organic gardener, environmental biologist, allergy researcher and allergy patient I must write that this is the most comprehensive analysis of the interface between pollen exposure and allergy patient that I have yet read. The book provides information for allergy patients to do something positive to control their own allergic environment that goes well beyond usual recommendations like air cleaners and allergy shots. The "Allergy Fighting Garden" takes the reader well beyond the garden, enabling the creation of allergen-free school yards and low allergen city streets. I had high regard for Thomas Ogren's first book but this one is exceptional.

I've always believed in the power of the mind. As a child I remember that I could always make myself sick on command if I had to, whatever it took to get out of school. I would usually have dream d�j� vu and I would never cease to be amazed by the fact that something in my dreams would later become part of my objective reality. I constantly saw amazing things, some things that scared the daylights out of me, and I was blessed by the fact that I lived with my great-grandmother who seemed to be able to play with reality like some kids play with toys. At the time I did not feel so blessed to be around my great grandmother, and her antics scared me to death, but now in retrospect I find it amazing that others have never seen what I have seen and even doubt that such things exist. Life has an inner reality, I explore that realm. I believe that thought created reality instead of the other way around. What I have discovered, I try to share.

Great Tips and Workable Methods

What to thank the author for making available this creative and powerful method for servitor construction.

In this book you will find theory and conceptual framework should you need it. If you don't need all that you will discover servitor rooms and a "humane" modernist approach to insuring obedient thoughtforms. Along the lines of this my favorite tip learnt is so obvious and so spot-on I never would of put the two together unless I worked with servitors as extensive as the author has. Not wanting to spoil the surprise but it has something to do with obedience training, observation and leadership. It's how he packages this concept is the surprise and you'll get it at once.

Think, Visualize, Manifest!

Humans have much more power than they're led to believe by our programmed "authority" figures. The main reason is that the "authorities" are also programmed. I realize that many people may not know this, but a servitor is really unnecessary, unless you're just really lonely. Any human can easily visualize whatever he needs or wants and it will come about, if that person KNOWS that it will. This is a universal law, whether or not people are aware of it. If enough people of like mind got together with this attitude, nothing could stop them from changing the entire world and that is what Controllers don't want.

Stewart Macaulay is an internationally recognized leader of the law-in-action approach to contracts and a founder of the modern law-and-society movement. He is the author of Law and the Balance of Power: The Automobile Manufacturers and their Dealers (1966) and Law in Action: A Socio-Legal Reader (2007, with Lawrence Friedman and Elizabeth Mertz).

You have come to this school to embark upon the study of the law. Most of you have in the back of your heads an idea that as a result of that study you will become lawyers. Some of you have some notion of what it is that a lawyer does. You think of a man who tries cases before the courts. Or do you think particularly of a man to whom to turn in case, for any reason, you happen to get arrested? But what a court does, what a lawyer does in court, and what he does outside, what relationship either court or lawyer has to the law, what relation the law school has to any of these things -- around these things, I take it, there floats a pleasant haze. If it were not pleasant, you would not be here. Perhaps you would not, if there were no haze.

What I propose to do is to take up successively a series of questions. First, and today, what is this law about, which you propose to study? Second, and tomorrow, what is the machinery for going about this study; what are you going to have to do in this school and how can you best go about doing it? Third, what are the opportunities that the school offers and what are some of the ways of their solution? And lastly, how does the study of the law here bear upon the work that you will do and the life that you will live when you leave this school and go into practice?

A CLASSIC
By Student Starting Law School Next Fall
Written over 70 years ago, Bramble Bush is still THE book recommended for students to read just prior to beginning classes or early in their first semester of law school. Be prepared to read passages over again due to the author's 1920's style of sentence composition, but also be prepared for an enjoyable 200 pages of insight into the U.S. system of common law, case /precedence law, and most importantly, advice and guidance for 1L, 2L, and 3L (law) students.

The fun is in seeing what's dated

Professor Llewellyn's distinguished collection of lectures is best used nowadays, in my opinion, as a baseline to see what has changed in the legal profession and what has not. Llewellyn's discussion of the case system is a terrific look at the judge's toolbox, but law students today cannot rely on a deep understanding of the case system to become good lawyers -- the proliferation of other forms of law, particularly statutory and administrative law, is too great. On the other hand, Llewellyn's extreme statement of the legal realist position -- still only one competing theory of law when he gave his lectures -- is now the undisputed champion of the legal discipline, and it's fascinating to travel back to a time when the author felt the need to be an apologist for it. The chapters that stand up best, in my opinion, are the ones discussing the dilemma of siding with the powerful after graduation; this is a topic that only becomes more timely as expenses rise and the pressure to join Big Law grows for new law graduates. I would especially recommend this book for casual students of legal history or jurisprudence.

Standing the test of time.....

I actually felt myself getting smarter while reading this book. Outside of just covering "technicalities" of studying law, he also offers a fascinating perspective on the study and practice of law in relation to the lawyer's life (money/finc. security as primary motive for entering legal profession.) Also interesting are his views on making/missing law review and the effect this has on 2Ls. Overall, an excellent read, time well spent, and very deserving of the word "classic."

Vicky Bowden, DNSc, RN, is a registered and pediatric nurse who is Vice Provost for Undergraduate Programs, WASC Accreditation Liaison Officer, and Professor, School of Nursing at Azusa Pacific University in Azusa, California. She has co-authored three nursing textbooks and is past president of the Society of Pediatric Nurses, and serves as a consultant in evidence-based practice.

Cindy Smith Greenberg, DNSc, RN, PNP-BC, FAAN is Professor and Interim Associate Dean, College of Health and Human Development at California State University, Fullerton. Specializing in pediatrics, Dr. Greenberg serves on the Editorial Board and as a reviewer for several professional journals and has authored three pediatric nursing texts.
