Not worth the time or money
By SOS
I purchased this book to learn specifically about sheet metal layout using Solidworks 2011. It's a good thing I knew about Solidworks before purchasing it. Very incomplete and shallow with regards to using the design tools of Solidworks 2011. This is a great! example of our struggling education system. Publishing a book for use as text in college which is short, lacks educational value and comprehensiveness. Must be about the money. My advice: Spend a little more money and get something for your money.

SolidWorks Sheet Metal
By James Kirkpatrick
This book is an excellent way to learn SolidWorks basic commands for drafting.
It also allowed me to learn SolidWorks commands for sheet metal in a way that is exactly what I teach in the classroom.
I have used this book for one semester and find it easy for students to use to produce models and drawings.
I particularly like the structure of the chapters with the objectives at the beginning and the review questions at the end of each chapter.

Fatherland: A Family History, by Nina Bunjevac

"A heartfelt and extremely absorbing examination of exile, reconciliation and destructive politics…as vividly immediate as any headline." ―Rachel Cooke, Guardian

Standing alongside Marjane Satrapi's Persepolis and Joe Sacco's Palestine, Nina Bunjevac's Fatherland renders the searing history of the Balkans in the twentieth century through the experiences of the author and her family. In 1975, fearing her husband’s growing fanaticism, Nina Bunjevac's mother fled her marriage and adopted country of Canada, taking Nina―then only a toddler―and her older sister back to Yugoslavia to live with her parents. Her husband and Nina's father, Peter, was a die-hard Serbian nationalist who was forced to leave his country in the 1950s. Remaining in Canada, he became involved with a terrorist organization bent on overthrowing the Communist Yugoslav government and attacking its supporters in North America. Then in 1977, while his family was still in Yugoslovia, Peter was killed in an accidental explosion while building a bomb.

Through exquisite and haunting black-and-white art, Nina Bunjevac documents the immediate circumstances surrounding her father's death and provides a sweeping account of the former Yugoslovia under Fascism and Communism, telling an unforgettable true story of how the scars of history are borne by family and nation alike.

Review
“A fascinating, eerie memoir of her fraught family history of exile and immigration…Bunjevac is masterful at presenting an impression of the confusion, disruption, and fear ingrained in the family. The illustrations are unusual and extraordinarily rendered.” (Publishers Weekly)

which proves she is as funny and moving with lighter material

This is a stunning personal history told in the Graphic Novel format that will join the works of Art Spiegelman and Miriam Katin as important personal documents. It is an experience as well as an absorbing read with Bunjevac's unique and affecting art drawing you into her world. I give this book my highest reccomendation and urge the reader to seek out her first book Heartless, which proves she is as funny and moving with lighter material.

Families torn apart by ideology.
By B. Wolinsky
I had no idea there was conflict between Serb-Americans, especially not the kind that resulted in bombings in the USA and Canada. Bunjevac’s father came here after WWII, and hated the communists. He got involved with a terror group, bombed Yugoslav embassies and property throughout the country. Bunjevac’s mother came from a family that supported the communists, and the two families hated each other. In a town with a sizeable Serb population, the two groups were often at odds. I never knew.

Aside from the benefits of a history lesson, Bunjevac’s family biography has a very original style of illustration. The drawings are stark black and white, almost with a photorealistic quality. There’s no color, and the author portrays her life with her family as anything but colorful. Life in Yugoslavia was peasantry, and in the USA they lived in rust belt towns that would’ve been gray all over. Fleeing back to Yugoslavia in the 1970’s (the husband’s terror activities were endangering the family) they ended up in a communist utopia, just as gray as a mill town, but with straight modern lines.

My only quarrel with this book is that the comic book style makes it difficult to put things in writing. There’s more I want to know about, like how the family managed in Yugoslavia in the 70’s and 80’s, and how they survived the civil war of the 1990’s. Other than that, the story shifts easily between a primitive country, bleak American mill towns, communist industry, and families split by politics.

A Terrorist in the Family
By Loves the View
This is a story of the author's father, a Serbian nationalist. In the scenes of his childhood you see his reaction to loss is small acts of violence. As he gets older, his life has little joy. He drinks and becomes more violent.

While I'd have liked this to be a more personal book, the story is told in reportorial fashion. You learn how the author's family met and married. You learn the history of their region. You see the steps by which her father became a terrorist.

I selected this after having seen these drawings at an art museum in Toronto. While the story is a only sketch, the pictures are not. They are beautifully done.

The book leaves the reader with too many unanswered questions.

Review
“Filled with wisdom and thought experiments and things that will mess with your mind.” — Neil Gaiman, author of The Graveyard Book and American Gods

“Cory Doctorow has been thinking longer and smarter than anyone else I know about how we create and exchange value in a digital age.” — Douglas Rushkoff, author of Present Shock and Program or Be Programmed

"Author, Internet guru, and practical philosopher Cory Doctorow gives hard-headed advice about how to gain fame and fortune using the Internet. Along the way, he explains a great deal about the hidden workings and dangers of modern technology. Whether you want to make money online or just surf safely, there's much to learn in this fast-moving and entertaining narrative.” — Alex Kozinski, Chief Judge of the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit

"In his best-selling novel Ready Player One, Ernest Cline predicted that decades from now, Doctorow (Homeland, 2013, etc.) should share the presidency of the Internet with actor Wil Wheaton. Consider this manifesto to be Doctorow’s qualifications for the job.

The author provides a guide to the operation of the Internet that not only makes sense, but is also written for general readers. Using straightforward language and clear analogies, Doctorow breaks down the complex issues and tangled arguments surrounding technology, commerce, copyright, intellectual property, crowd funding, privacy and value—not to mention the tricky situation of becoming “Internet Famous.” Following a characteristically thoughtful introduction by novelist Neil Gaiman, rock star Amanda Palmer offers a blunt summary of today’s world: “We are a new generation of artists, makers, supporters, and consumers who believe that the old system through which we exchanged content and money is dead. Not dying: dead.” So the primary thesis of the book becomes a question of, where do we go from here? Identifying the Web’s constituents as creators, investors, intermediaries and audiences is just the first smart move. Doctorow also files his forthright, tactically savvy arguments under three “laws,” the most important of which has been well-broadcast: “Any time someone puts a lock on something that belongs to you and won’t give you the key, that lock isn’t there for your benefit.” These aren’t the wild-eyed proclamations that arose from the Occupy movement or the hysteria that seems to surround Edward Snowden, whom Doctorow touches on only briefly here. Instead, the author advocates for a liberalized system of copyright laws that finally admits that the Internet, for all its virtues and diverse purposes, is nothing but one great big copy machine, and it’s not going away.

Doctorow has spoken and written on these issues many times before but never quite so persuasively. Required reading for creators making their ways through the new world."—Kirkus (starred)

"Doctorow... might be the perfect person to parse our deeply dystopian present."—Baltimore City Paper

"Each of the miniessays and lengthy sidebars Doctorow offers in support of his laws is an education in itself. … [his] hard-won information-age wisdom is for everyone who consumes copyrighted material today—which is everyone." —Library Journal (Starred)

"Doctorow effectively holds his audience by offering some intriguing analogies with equally intriguing ramifications." —The Boston Globe

"Information Doesn't Want to Be Free is the most entertaining and informational book on copyright law you'll ever read." —Shelf Awareness

"In Information Doesn’t Want to Be Free: Laws for the Internet Age, Doctorow provides a thoughtful treatise on creativity in the digital age." —GigaOm

Reviews for Little Brother:

“Doctorow throws off cool ideas the way champagne generates bubbles...[he] definitely has the goods.” —San Francisco Chronicle

“A wonderful, important book…I’d recommend Little Brother over pretty much any book I’ve read this year, and I’d want to get it into the hands of as many smart thirteen-year-olds, male and female, as I can. Because I think it’ll change lives. Because some kids, maybe just a few, won’t be the same after they’ve read it. Maybe they’ll change politically, maybe technologically. Maybe it’ll just be the first book they loved or that spoke to their inner geek. Maybe they’ll want to argue about it and disagree with it. Maybe they’ll want to open their computer and see what’s in there. I don’t know. It made me want to be thirteen again right now, and reading it for the first time.” —Neil Gaiman

“A tale of struggle familiar to any teenager, about those moments when you choose what your life is going to mean.”—Steven Gould

“A believable and frightening tale of a near-future San Francisco … Filled with sharp dialogue and detailed descriptions… within a tautly crafted fictional framework.” —Publishers Weekly (starred review)

“Readers will delight in the details of how Marcus attempts to stage a techno-revolution … Buy multiple copies; this book will be h4wt (that’s ‘hot,’ for the nonhackers).” —Booklist (starred review)

“Marcus is a wonderfully developed character: hyperaware of his surroundings, trying to redress past wrongs, and rebelling against authority … Raising pertinent questions and fostering discussion, this techno-thriller is an outstanding first purchase." —School Library Journal (starred review) Little Brother

"Cory Doctorow's punchy, instructive 'Information Doesn’t Want to Be Free: New Laws for the Internet Age' is a must-read for anyone who hopes to make a living selling creative work online. A buoyant and geeky manual, it teaches creators how to make today’s complex intellectual property rules and technology work for them." —San Francisco Chronicle

"An excellent, sometimes sobering primer on copyright and creativity in the Internet age." —Milwaukee Journal Sentinel

"A readable, concise look at the breadth and scope of copyright law in the modern age." —The Consumerist

Good book and I really liked the cover (also liked the content)
By Amazon Customer
Book mentions copyright over and over. What is odd is that with all the mentions of copyright there is no real overview of how copyright works and what the history of it is. I already have that knowledge so the book worked OK for me but if you are an author or musician and you don't have scholarly/legal background on copyright I don't think the debate is going to be as useful. I think a 4-5 page background/context on copyright would have made a big difference. Now that a reader knows this you might want to consider doing some background copyright reading before you read this book.

There is also commentary by Doctorow about things like SOPA that mean more if you have followed the SOPA debate. Doctorow did define SOPA (Stop Online Piracy Act) but there seems to be an assumption that you know about the SOPA debate. Many people do especially if you are the kind of person that might read this book but if you are an author that has been holed up working on a book you might not have the background. After you read Doctorow's book once you might want to make note of terms; research their context, and then you can reread what Doctorow wrote and it may be more meaningful with additional context.

The book is broken into three laws that Doctorow has devised:

First law: Any time someone puts a lock on something that belongs to you, and won't give you a key, they're not doing it for your benefit.

Second law: Fame won't make your rich, But you can't get paid without it

Third law: Information doesn't want to be free people do

I found someone that synthesized Doctorow's three laws from talks he had given and the way that person had written them made a little more sense. If you read the chapters related to the rule you get these points but you still have to extract them. When they are written this way I think they are clearer.

(Synthesis of rules taken from Doctorow talks)
First law: Any time someone puts a lock on something that belongs to you, and won't give you a key, they're not doing it for your benefit.

Second law: It's hard to monetize fame but it's impossible to monetize obscurity i.e. fame won't guarantee fortune, but no one has ever gotten rich by being obscure.

Third law: making it easy to censor and spy on everyone to protect copyright is a bad idea and bad practice i.e. information doesn't want to be free, people do.

The Open Internet Starts Here and Now
By Chris Ziesler
This is an important book. It is important, not so much because of the undeniable skill and passion with which Cory Doctorow lays out his arguments, but more because the subject he addresses, the freedom and openness of the Internet, are of vital interest to everyone who uses the Net. According to Internet Live Stats that means just over 3 billion people and increasing by the second. To put it another way, in 1995 about 1% of the population of planet Earth were connected to the Internet, today, less than 20 years later, it's a tad over 40%.

Doctorow explores why this boom in Internet access and use has proved to be such a blessing to everyone, but then goes on to explain why the copyright laws as they are currently enacted in all leading industrial nations are utterly lacking in fitness and applicability to the real digital world and, more importantly, why they lead to all manner of abusive corporate behavior.

He is at his compelling best when he cites specific corporate abuses and explains the economic motivations behind the behavior. But if this was just a book about the dark side of the Internet it would be selling the reader short. Instead, having carefully laid out the problems with DRM (Digital Rights Management), Spyware, Digital Locks, unwarranted surveillance, and other abuses, Doctorow then suggests practical and workable solutions that take account of the interest of all parties involves.

This book is part of a large and important debate. It makes very telling arguments against just accepting the direction in which the entertainment conglomerates and national governments would like to push the digital world and suggests an alternative vision which is fairer and more just for the 3 billion of us who happen not to be major music labels, film production studios or spy agencies.

Information Wants
By Blue Critter
This book could use some more structure. As it is, it seems to be a bunch of blog posts strung together to form a marketable size book. The chapters are short (sometimes 2 pages) which lend to the disjointed blog-type feeling. Not that there aren't some valuable nuggets. The book effectively points out the shared interests of the entertainment conglomerates and the spy agencies. Both seek to monitor and control the communications network and what we can watch and store on our computer and TV screens. Sort of of an "entertainment / surveillance complex."

In his analysis of the major media corporations, he discusses the stakeholders (creators, employees, shareholders) and points out that shareholders get first dibs on profits. This is mirrored in economic discussions that, due to the structure of the stock market, the shareholders are the least committed of the stakeholders. Stock speculators can be in and out of a position in minutes, whereas suppliers and employees are in it for a long term. So the least committed parties in the relationship are the ones that control the relationship.

I know this is a book about art and copyright, but I would like to see a discussion of open source licensing and how effective it is. Especially since the book title suggests a broader scope.

Girls my age usually spend their days dancing, singing, and dreaming of Prince Charming. Not me. I spend my days hunting and praying my poor parents and my dear sisters survive another harsh winter.

I never expected to find the solution to all my problems in the cave of the white bear I was hunting. My parents will never starve again, and my sisters will get to live that life of dancing and singing, but there’s a catch: I must become the wild beast’s wife. Giving up my freedom, accepting I’ll never feel the warm touch of a man… it’s all worth it for my family’s happiness. So, I let the beast lock me up in its icy castle, and I get ready for a life of boredom and sacrifice. However, when my first night in the white bear’s home turns into a passionate encounter with a mysterious stranger, I understand my life will be anything but boring.

Thoroughly enjoyed :)
By CelticWolf9
Bearly Cursed is the second read for this author, with a gifted copy for review.
The story is about Brenda, whose family is struggling in hard times. She decides she wants to kill and skin the Bear she sees to use it's pelt for warming herself and sisters, knowing the coming winter will be hard for them. She does shoot it and follows it into a cave discovery wealth beyond her dreams. The Bear makes an offer she can't refuse to benefit her family and stays with the Bear in his Castle within a mountain.
It is somewhat similar to 'Aimee' but this Bear refuses to let her see him at night, so she has no idea what he looks like.
Brenda has to decided if after the time spent with both Bear and man, if she will risk knowing what he looks like. You will have to read the rest. :)
I did enjoy this story and their HEA ending for all characters.
So thank you Cara, now I'm onto Trapped In A Gilded Cage. :)

Good Fairy Tale
By Judy Lee
Although Bearly Cursed wasn't a typical shifter story it was an entertaining fairy tale. I would expect the "Fairy Tales with a Shift" series to be fairy tales...not so much shifter stories.

I'm not familiar with this author, but really like her style and will read more of her work.
Her second book of this series is now available and I look forward to reading it.

If you are looking for a good fairy tale romance then I recommend this book.

Ok, but needs development
By Karen Smith
This tale is reminiscent of both the Polar Bear King and the legend of Sir Gawain and Ragnel. It tries to be erotic, but doesn't quite make it. The story proceeds at a breakneck pace and would benefit from better character development, such as Robin McKinley's BEAUTY. This is a nice effort that needs another run it two through the typewriter. There's more than enough material here to expand the tale into a true novel.
