I wrote this book as an inexpensive resource for students taking a college course entitled "Math for the Liberal Arts," "Math for Poets," or any other such basic course designed to satisfy the general education math requirement for graduation. This was a difficult task because these courses cover a very wide variety of topics: graphs, sets, logic, voting, fair division, fractals, etc. I covered all of these and more, though it is possible that your professor might include one or two topics not covered by this book.

I have taught a Math for the Liberal Arts course many times at MCLA, a small state college in Massachusetts, so I have a fairly solid understanding of the sorts of students enrolled in these classes. Often, these students have been taught mathematics poorly in the past, and thus have a very negative opinion of it. Other students have a decent grasp of the basics, but are more interested in a wide survey of mathematics than a course on a single topic (calculus, statistics, etc.). With this audience in mind, I took care to include brief, clear explanations for the all the topics covered in the book. Formulas without explanations can be bewildering, but long-winded mathematical ramblings can be even worse.

Anyone who picks up this book ought to be able to learn useful and important mathematical concepts in a very short period of time, even if that person has only a basic understanding of arithmetic and algebra. This book ought to be a benefit for a person currently taking a course like Math for the Liberal Arts. While this book does not cover any advanced mathematics topics completely, it will also serve as a gentle introduction to geometry, statistics, trigonometry, and precalculus.

I've read several books by Susan Elizabeth Phillips and of them, HOT SHOT is my hands-down favorite. I found the characters rich and fascinating and I loved the backdrop of the birth of personal computers. And this is coming from someone who is just barely computer-literate!
Susannah's relationships with the pirate, the nerd, and the stuffed shirt are great. Her growth in the book from Daddy's girl, to rebel, to woman is wonderful. Also interesting is the evolution of her relationship with her sister, Paige. Anyone who wasn't touched by Joel and Angela's pilgrimage to Elvis' funeral in August, 1977, must have ice water flowing through her veins.
But the distinctiveness of the book is its exploration of the birth of personal computers. It was fun watching SysVal duke it out with Apple. As an aside, I thought the battle for Susannah at the end was one of the most hilarious scenes I've read in romance fiction. Don't miss it!
I haven't read another book by Susan Elizabeth Phillips that I've enjoyed as much as this one. Try it!

No, not your typical SEP

This was one of her first books and it shows her writing style changed quite a bit. I enjoyed this book it was interesting and it reminded me of a "Judith Michael" book so I actually understood the flow of the story with the long absence of romance between the 2 characters. I was lucky enough to have read this book early on in my SEP reading so therefore I wasn't to dissapointed.
This book is not "light" and "humorous" as her others but it is a keeper if you like to see an author's growth. She did a tremendous amount of research (you can tell) about the beginning of the Computer age and Silicon Valley which was much appreciated and I think the romance was just thrown in because that was what she writes. All in all not a bad book just not something to pick up if you just finished reading "It Had to Be You" or "Nobody's Baby but Mine" this is a different style all together.

Brings out the emotions!

This is the first book by Susan Elizabeth Phillips that I've read.. and I've been searching for a book that's as good, ever since.
I was amazed by the increadible research that SEP must have done to write such an indepth look into the beginnings of a computer company and how it affected the main character(s) lives. Of course, I'm sure she got the idea from the lives of Steve Jobbs and Bill Gates. But adding a female to this combination was the perfect ingredient.
Susannah is an incredible heroine, one I could relate to, and I was sad when the story of her life was over. Her relationships and hardships were very real, and I found myself eatting up every page.. wondering what would happen next.
You'll also find one of the most well-written flashbacks of a character's life when you read the story of Mitch's childhood. I feel like I could read a whole book just on him.
Read this book.. it's not a typical frivilous romance novel.. You'll enjoy the story, but be prepared to get angry, cry like a baby, and burst out in laughter. Enjoy!

About the Author

Shannon L. Maynard lives in Colorado with her five girls where she is a legal assistant by day and an author by night. In between working and writing she can be found driving kids to soccer, folding mountains of pink laundry, or eating her weight in chocolate. Other addictions include shoe shopping, reading YA, and Australian and British accents (which may be partly to blame for her massive crush on Thor). If she had one wish it would be for more hours in the day to spend enjoying all of the above. Okay, everything except the laundry.

Shannon studied art and criminology before getting a license in cosmetology, but eventually wound up an expert daydreamer; a skill that occasionally leads to getting lost while driving, but has been a huge asset to her love for writing. Her debut novel WICKED LUCK is set to release June 2015 and is the first book in the Wicked Luck Trilogy.

Good plot, but nothing compared to book one

I absolutely loved the first book so when i heard the sequel had been released i grabbed it immediately. I was even more hooked when i saw the amazing cover.

And while the character development starts where we left off and continues at the perfect place, i found myself getting increasingly annoyed, not with Ava's inability to choose between her two men, but the way she plays them both. I understand that she was in love with them both but it felt like she changed her mind as soon as she was with the other guy every time and i felt myself getting annoyed with it. Despite this i persevered and found myself able to look past it and enjoy the plot that Shannon has continued to develop. The other characters were a great addition to the story line and now and then i did feel myself liking a few of the romance moments between Ava and Dax.

Of course, it does end on a cliffhanger that leaves us wanting book 3. I was slightly disappointed at the cliffhanger as the author had spent the previous chapters building up this perfect ending and instead of leaving me desperately wanting more, i found myself slightly annoyed that i didn't like the cliff hanger ending. Maybe it was because book one left me with such high expectations...

I received a copy of Wicked Fate from the publisher for an honest review...
Wicked Fate picks up where Wicked Luck ended. I loved the cliffhanger ending of Wicked Luck and couldn't wait to get a copy of Wicked Fate.
But I was disappointed in this one. Wicked Fate a lot more action and turns then Wicked Luck had and that is what gives it the 4 star rating. I found myself getting increasing annoyed at Ava and Roxy and how their characters turned out. I just felt that there could have been a lot more. The story started out promising, dragged in the middle and picked up at the end.
But the Dax and Preston were still great characters. Even though they both loved Ava, they still worked together to make sure they all stayed safe. The triangle going between them didn't cause them to go off the deep end. Kirk and Anna seem like they have a back story and little pieces of their story seemed to come up throughout the book.
The end of the book was great. I love the cliffhanger because it is making me want the next book.

The perfect sequel to Wicked Luck

Oh. My. Gosh. This is the sequel to Wicked Luck, which I reviewed a few days ago. Click here to read my review of Wicked Luck. Wicked Luck ends in a dramatic cliffhanger, and Wicked Fate picks up right in the middle of the action.
There’s so much to talk about, so I’ll start with what I loved about this book. I loved the romance of it all. In Wicked Luck, in terms of vying for Ava’s affection, it was Dax against Ava’s memory of Preston. Now, it’s Dax against Preston, head on. It’s this love triangle that makes up most of the conflict of the novel, as both guys love her, and it’s up to Ava to choose who she wants to be with. There are amazing scenes with both guys taking her on island dates, and, as the co-pilot Kirk keeps mentioning, reminds me of The Bachelorette, where all that’s missing is a rose to give to the chosen guy. To be honest, as the truth comes to light, it might even be hard to choose a guy to side with. (Team Dax? Team Preston? It’s a hard choice!!!) Once again, the narrative is spot on, and you can clearly imagine the events of the novel in your head as if you were there. There’s also more drama with the tribes, which is exactly what I had been hoping for. We get a backstory on how they came to live on the island, and their beliefs come to light and spark the climax of the novel.
Now, when it comes to things I didn’t like, it was mainly a few characterization issues and continuity problems, the latter of which may be fixed in the editing process before the release. In terms of continuity, there was a scene in which Dax asked Ava what she loved about Preston and about past dates they went on, all of which were things that Dax should have known from Ava’s diary. Maybe he just wanted to hear it from her mouth, which would make sense in the context of the scene. When it comes to characterization, I wish we could have gotten to know Anna more. In both books, she’s just a side character who doesn’t say much, and somehow comes to have an important, but still minor role in the grand scheme of things. Also, Roxy, Ava’s sister, could have been fleshed out more. We get to see that she’s bitter and angry that she’s lost everything while Ava seems to have everything better, leading to a huge case of sibling rivalry between the two, but we don’t really get to see much of her after her dramatic exit, and by then it’s too late to get into her head much. Bummer.
I highly recommend this series, and now I’m desperately hoping for another book, because, as I said earlier, this ends in a cliffhanger, and I’m still on edge after reading that ending! As stated in my review of Wicked Luck, this is a book that anyone could love. There’s a love triangle, plenty of action, tragedy, and plenty of revelations throughout the entire book. While the first book may have been lacking in excitement and conflict, this book is full of it. If you want to read a unique romance, Wicked Luck and Wicked Fate are the books for you.

I loved Freakonomics which is by a different Author. This is my first book by this guy. You know I can't say its not interesting at times but I see one reviewer said he used ten pages where one would do. I agree. And some of the conclusions reached with his exhaustive studies are common sense. I mean I guess he verified what we all know to be true but I personally can't imagine spending my life doing this type of stuff and maybe thats the problem for me. But I loved Freakonomics so much and though this would be the same but no cigar for me. I gave it a three because if you're into the silly stuff then it may be a good book. Just didn't resonate with me. Seems to be a great command of the obvious.
