About the Author
Benjamin Baumer is Director of the Program in Statistical and Data Sciences at Smith College. He was formerly the statistical analyst for the baseball operations department of the New York Mets. Andrew Zimbalist is Robert A. Woods Professor of Economics at Smith College, a frequent sports industry consultant and media commentator, and author of many books, including In the Best Interests of Baseball? Governing the National Pastime.

This is a very important book for every baseball person from the fan to the GM to the Owner

This could be a very long review because this very important book contains much to comment on. I will, however, let you read this book to fully grasp what it says. You will have a complete review of baseball statistical analysis from the creation of the box score, through the Dodgers early efforts in the 1950's, to early regression analysis and then the full blown Sabermetrics efforts of today. This book also does a great service in pointing out the errors Michael Lewis added to "Money Ball" the book and errors in the movie, that have bothered me since I first saw the movie. In fact, Lewis violated Bob Uecker's first rule of resumes, "Don't lie about your batting average, they'll look that up." by "altering fact."

Zimbalist and Baumer provide a guide for the reader who want to know what analytics is and what it does, and they go further by stating the limits as well. You will find, contrary to stats geeks, that scouting is in the ascendancy, as it should be.

What I found most enlightening is explanation of the distinction between statistical analysis and data analysis. This is because I think there is too much data out there and data science, through big data management, is the way to go and is the way the secrets locked in the data will be revealed. This is good news for Sabermetricians as their tools will be enhanced.

Simply stated, if you are a baseball person at whatever level, from fan to GM, this is the book for you. I think its impact will be significant and the game will be better understood because of it.

Great book

This is a must-read for anyone interested in analyzing sports. After an entertaining first chapter deconstructing the various errors and omissions in Moneyball, to which the authors attribute the surge of interest in analytics both inside and outside the sports industry, the book proceeds to a very accessible summary of what is and isn't known about the subject. It clarifies the baseball GM's basic analytical problem--that the performance indicators of individual players that are most closely associated with team wins experience very little consistency from one year to the next, so that it is easy to explain a team's performance in a particular season but very difficult to make a reliable prediction of how it will do the next season. It then summarizes the much more rudimentary state of analytics in other sports and explains why this is the case. The book concludes with a path-breaking quantitative analysis of the success of baseball analytics in improving team performance. Highly recommended for serious sports fans.

Inside the ultra-hyper-new age geek baseball analysis thats sticking a 'saber' into the side of old school baseball culture

First, make sure you have either read the book or seen the movie 'Moneyball,' because much of the early parts of this book relates directly to it, especially what is not considered a factual portrayal in the movie or the book of what actually happened concerning the 'saber' revolution in Oakland. Next, be prepared to learn why sabermetricians typically have a very strong academic background in statistics, such as degrees in economics. Then be prepared to 1) realize that the geeks are truly geeks and not usually 'inside' baseball people; 2) be ready to accept that sabermetrics is a discipline that is changing the philosophy on how the game is perceived and played and 3) be ready to be overwhelmed by an onslaught of 'foreign' baseball acronyms that can become very difficult to process, such as WAR, fWAR, rWAR, UZR, FIELD/fx, MORP and DER without a handy guide. Its a brave new baseball world.

Jennifer Sygo , MSc, RD, is a registered dietitian and sports nutritionist for Cleveland Clinic Canada and the nutrition columnist for the National Post. A graduate of McMaster University, Jennifer went on to obtain a master’s of science in human biology and nutritional sciences at the University of Guelph. Her nutrition expertise is regularly featured in the media, including on Canada AM, CBC radio and television and Global News, and she is a regular contributor to Oxygen Magazine. Outside of her work, Jennifer is an avid sports enthusiast and mother of two boys.

Everyone interested in nutrition should read this book

This book is amazing. There is no food agenda or diet fad being pushed, and there is no propaganda or pseudo-science. It just takes foods that have gotten a lot of hype and uses the research available to determine whether the hype is deserved, and it does so with language that can be easily understood without being patronizing. In addition to that, the author's humor keeps the book incredibly fun to read.

One of the Best Books On Food I've Ever Read

There are a lot of books on nutrition and foods. And for a fitness professional like myself, it's good to know food, and not just supplements. And there are A LOT of things I like about this book:

- Each section tells you a bit about the history of the food. Sure, it doesn't contribute much to the nutrition, but it sure is interesting.

- It's a very no-nonsense type of book. There's no sensationalism, or hype. Just cold, hard studies. And where the research is lacking, Jennifer says so straight up.

- Some so-called "superfoods", although they may be nutritious are just too new to North America to have had any research done on them, so we really don't know their nutrition profile. This is for things like Goji berries, Noni berries, Acai berries and so on.

- My favourite part: she clearly states the nutritional BENEFITS of cheese and beef!!! Love it. Just because they have some downsides to them doesn't mean there aren't some things that are highly beneficial and nutritious about them.

- She also lists a lot of foods that are kind of plain and ordinary, yet are truly superfoods. Like beans, lentils, oysers, and others.

- Not only does Jennifer explain their nutritional profile, but she actually examines the available studies connecting the different foods to different health conditions (like cholesterol, heart disease, diabetes, etc.). It's one thing to look at the effect of an isolated nutrient on a certain marker of health, but food contains a lot of nutrients, in different dosages. Could it be that the interaction of different nutrients in a particular food either enhances the effect, or takes away from it? That's why I like that she brings up studies specifically on food and not on nutrients (for example, when talking about kiwi, she doesn't bring up studies discussing the effects of vitamin C on heart health, but actually the effects of kiwi on heart health). Much more accurate.

I can't recommend this book enough.

This books covers a wide range of topics, from modern 'superfoods' through to established foods which may be better for us but which have fallen out of favor. All done with scientific rigor.

Moving music of relaxation

I bought this wonderful music book because I remembered some songs it from my college education over 30 years ago. In particular I was searching for the Samuel Barber song, "Sure on this Shining Night," a song of healing I want to sing in church. The song among other good ones is a gem in this book of songs.

I was delighted by this updated edition, which contains so much more music than my original, which dates from the 1970s. I bought two copies, one for me and one for my accompanist. In addition to containing so much more music, the printing is very clear and the book stays open beautifully.

A Necessary Set for the Serious Christian Reader

This is a must read for the serious Christian reader. Schaff has left no stone unturned in this compilation of historical Christian Creeds. In fact, since Schaff was the consummate Christian historian of the 19th century, he approaches this set in a very historical way. The set itself is organized via a certain time frame that Schaff apparently had in mind (unless the publishers altered this in later editions). Schaff begins by covering what a creed actually is, and why creeds were necessary. This is a very helpful section for his reader. From here Schaff covers all the creeds that have been written over the course of church history beginning with the ecumenical creeds (i.e. the Apostle's creed, Nicene creed, etc.). Schaff then covers the creeds of the Greek Church, the Roman Church, the Evangelical Protestant Church, The Evangelical Lutheran Church, the Evangelical Reformed Church (in all the countries that apply), the Modern Evangelical denominations (Congregational, Anabaptists, Calvinistic Baptists, Methodism, etc.). Each of these are covered in their own chapter and this is just volume 1 (WOW!). Volume 2 consists of the Scripture confessions , Ante-Nicene and Nicene Rules of Faith and Baptismal Creeds, greater detail and commentary on the Ecumenical, Greek, Roman, Russian, and Catholic Union Creeds. Volume 3 is more of what Schaff did not cover in volume 2, namely, the Evangelical Lutheran, Reformed, Modern Protestant, etc. Creeds. These are all covered in greater detail with commentary. Part four (of volume 3) is a modern (19th century for Schaff's day) look into the creeds that were being developed. Overall, this is a great set to own, and an invaluable reference tool that can be used many times over. Schaff was a wonderful historian and this work is among his best. Keep in mind though that Schaff was distinctively Protestant and this set will give you his Protestant opinion and assessment of the Roman Catholic Church. However, if you are wanting a powerful assessment of some of the problems that have troubled Protestants regarding Roman Catholicism, then you will get that in this set. I highly recommend this set as a great reference work.

Explanation of Content and praise of comprehensiveness

Philip Schaff, the acknowledged "father" of American church history, has brought together in one place nearly all the confessional statements from the history of Christian orthodoxy. This three volume set of over 2400 pages, with a helpful table of contents and extensive indices, is divided thusly: Vol I, The History of Creeds; Vol. II, the Greek and Latin Creeds; Vol. III, The Evangelical Protestant Creeds. Volumes II and III contain the Creeds in their original language (Greek, Latin, French, Duth, English), with an English translation en fas. This set is a must for every serious student of church history, and has endured for over a century because of its thoroughness, fine prose style, and impartial tone. Highly recommended.

illuminating and inspiring

I couldn't believe there existed so much information on this subject. I'm a student of the humanities and this is right up my alley. The inclusion of original documents in Greek and Latin have made this book a relic. One should feel gratified that through this book one can own a piece of history. I have read many books on history and I can assertively say this is one of the best. Imagine, why read a book on christian history when you can go straight to the source and discover for yourself. I thank goodness there are people who still care about publishing such important things.

About the Author
Clayton M. Christensen is the Kim B. Clark Professor of Business Administration at Harvard Business School. He is the author of eight critically acclaimed books, including the bestsellers How Will You Measure Your Life?, The Innovator’s Dilemma, and Disrupting Class. Excellent book but not updated

Very good insight on how to view the innovation process. However this is marketed as a new edition, but it certainly doesn't feel like it. Examples do not reflect changes in industry since the original was written.

So if you read the original edition, not worth investing in this update. But if you did not read the original then this is definitely worth reading. All of those reviews are still relevant.

Excellent input for growth management and margin optimalization

The book repeats most everything from the "Dilemma" book and, unless readers want some interesting historical examples, there is no need to read the first.

The most suitable prerequisites and circumstances for hatching successful disruptive businesses are explained in detail. These are suggested as the main route to predictable growth for existing and new companies.

The book is quite repetitive and I suspect it to somewhat oversimplify complex issues, also using a scientific language while offering theories that aren't really proven. However the ideas presented and the clearly structured content convincingly offer the reader insights into margin fluctuations in the value network and the logic of growth.

You quickly get used to the author calling him selves "we", like if the book was actually a scientific publication.

Highly recommended, also if you have already read the "Dilemma" book.
