Such love for death after reading

Wow, such a fun yet deep read. The narratives are just wonderful, everyday adventures into humanity with a being who will never cease to exist. Mrs.tang paints a friendship that saves her from taking her own life too seriously, while still tackling important issues while baking cookies with death. Highly recommended

When creepy meets funny -hold onto your chocolate chips!

Do you think it's weird to read a book of death poems? Ok, I get that. But this book is so much more.... It takes a tongue-and-cheek view of death personified. For me, the representation of death became a metaphor for anything that haunts us- sorrow, self-criticism, worry- those thoughts that hound us so much that they become our companions. One of the take-aways from this book is encouragement. Understanding that as big and looming as these things we ruminate over can seem, they really are separate and finite. With humor, irony, and levity the poems show us how these things can be quite manageable.

The illustrations are simple and perfectly enhance the mood of the book. They made me laugh.

Have you ever talked with Death?

My grandfather, in the hospital for congenital heart failure, pneumonia, and cancer all at once, told me that the days were okay, but by night, "the long dark night of the soul" felt endless. He filled those hours with frank conversations with Death, whose visit seemed imminent. They must have been fruitful conversations, because Death didn't finally visit for another couple of years.

My grandfather must have been armed with some of the wisdom and wit contained in this book, because Miss Tang seems intimately comfortable with her partner in palaver. These poems are strictly conversational, but underneath the breezy banter are the profound and terrifying truths we all struggle with. Who will we love, and will they love us? Why are we here, and what part of this existence is true? Why is the universe tending to an ever-greater state of entropy? Death has plenty of answers for Miss Tang.

Death has an answer for everyone, eventually. Why not get a preview, and put him off for a little while, like my Grandpa?

An amazing new voice in YA fiction

Beautifully written, alternating between the voices of Payton and Kendall, this book gripped me from the first page, the characters staying with me long after the book ended. Also, this book manages to do what very few books achieve- it tells a great story and keeps you entertained while at the same time dealing with many of the issues facing young people today: the subject of identity- daring to accept who you are as well as finding the courage to bare yourself to those closest to you, taking the chance that you might lose them in the process; choosing between fame and friendship, treading the line between being a celebrity and being true to yourself. These issues are very sensitively handled, the writing jumps off the page, the dialogue is sharp and witty. Payton and Kendall, the protagonists, are very likeable and very real-I think we all can identify with them at some level and that is another of the strengths of this wonderful novel. Compelling. Highly recommended. A great read.

What happens when the line between friendship and love blurs? Kristen Zimmer's The Gravity Between Us is a daring and emotionally charged story that explores this premise and hooks the reader from page one. Kendall and Payton have been friends since childhood. Neither can remember a time when they were not there for one another. So when Kendall's life is transformed by Hollywood and its haze of glamour and perfection, her love for Payton becomes a secret she must guard. Can the two young women deal with the pressure of fame--especially when staying true to oneself feels impossible in the fame game?

The Gravity Between Us is a fantastic read--humorous, romantic and daring. Kristen's writing style is engaging and honest. In Payton and Kendall, she's succeeded in creating characters whom you care about instantly. And her portrayal of their relationship is beautifully rendered. I loved the Hollywood angle, the question of how one learns to deal with other people's reactions to same sex relationships and the idea of the zany game that is celebrity.

For me, The Gravity Between Us is a must-read new adult novel! I can't wait to read Kristen Zimmer's next book!

Must read~

Despite all the good ratings about this book, I was a bit hesitant in the beginning. I thought, "oh yeah, another 'straight' girl falls for her bestfriend book..."

But, I gave it a try anyway. I've read so many horrible books in the past, I thought it couldn't hurt. Then, BAM! I was zoned in, and couldn't get any work done because all I could think about was getting to my book. It's such an easy read and very, very likable. I enjoyed both characters, with their own voices and stories.

Why do otherwise intelligent individuals form seething masses of idiocy when they engage in collective action? Why do financially sensible people jump lemming-like into hare-brained speculative frenzies--only to jump broker-like out of windows when their fantasies dissolve? We may think that the Great Crash of 1929, junk bonds of the '80s, and over-valued high-tech stocks of the '90s are peculiarly 20th century aberrations, but Mackay's classic--first published in 1841--shows that the madness and confusion of crowds knows no limits, and has no temporal bounds. These are extraordinarily illuminating,and, unfortunately, entertaining tales of chicanery, greed and naivete. Essential reading for any student of human nature or the transmission of ideas.

In fact, cases such as Tulipomania in 1624--when Tulip bulbs traded at a higher price than gold--suggest the existence of what I would dub "Mackay's Law of Mass Action:" when it comes to the effect of social behavior on the intelligence of individuals, 1+1 is often less than 2, and sometimes considerably less than 0.

Be aware that the edition published by Harriman House ONLY contains the chapters relating to economics, so you only get probably 1/7 of the original book...

Truly a classic!

If you're into investing, sooner or later an investment columnist will mention Extraordinary Delusions as required reading. It's that and more...
Charles Mackay first details France's Mississippi Scheme & England's South Sea Bubble (from the early 1700's). Then he covers the famous Dutch "tulipomania" of the 1600's. These are all enjoyable reports of financial manias and their aftermaths (though the South Sea Bubble chapter dragged on a bit). But the financial reader will be surprised when she realizes she's still only 100 pages into a 700 page book! Mackay proceeds to cover:
Alchemy - 150 pages of exhaustive (& exhausting) detail of hobbyists & serious investors who were convinced they could turn base metals into gold, if only they could find the right ancient recipe & stoke their workshop cauldrons just a little bit hotter.
The Crusades - 100 pages that prove that modern Islamic fundamentalists did not invent the idea of a "holy war". I had no idea the Crusades came out of official harassment of Y1K religious pilgrims! Remember this: If your country is being inundated with religious pilgrims, just try to think of them as a tourist opportunity. You don't want to get them angry!
The Witch Mania - 100pp. This section was unexpectedly chilling. As I read about European witch trials of the 1400s-1600s, I kept thinking of our recent satanic child abuse trials. It's all been done before: The wild unprovable accusations, including eating dead babies; trusting unreliable witnesses specifically BECAUSE of the severity of the charges; False Memory Syndrome. At least the rack & Trial by Ordeal are no longer recognized as valid forensic techniques.
The Slow Poisoners - Murder isn't really murder if you poison the victim slowly enough, is it?
Also covered: Animal Magnetism, Prophecies, Fortune-Telling, Hair & beard fashions in men, catch phrases & slang, Relics, Duels & Ordeals, Haunted Houses, & Popular Admiration of Great Thieves.
At times the book dragged, especially in the chapters I wasn't interested in. (But hey, that's what skimming is for.) So with that caveat, go ahead & get the book. It'll be a great investment of 12 bucks!

The definitive book of manias

This is it. If you want to know how many times the world has been gripped by madness then look no farther than the reprinted edition of MacKay's classic. Written in that wonderful Olde English style of the early 19th century, MacKay takes us on a tour of the world's most horrifying manias - up to about 1840 anyway.

I particularly liked the chapter on witchcraft and witch hunts since it told me everything I'll ever need to know on why seemingly intelligent groups of people band together to banish or murder innocent members of society - just because they are different. Another engaging chapter deals with millennialism - the fear and dread that grips society at the end of each millennium. If you thought the end of the last one brought turbulence, you should read what happened a thousand years ago.

This book is often quoted by stock market pundits and talking heads as if it were a treatise on irrational behaviour in the financial markets. It isn't. It deals with irrational behaviour and mass stupidity in all walks of life. Five Stars.
